I text because you can do other things at the same time. You can't do something then reply the person's question ten minutes later in a traditional conversation.

Bad rant.

I am not a teen, and I don't jump for my cell phone whenever it goes off.

I like to text more than I like to talk on the phone. I don't know, I just don't like talking on the phone. Having a whole phone conversation because you want to make one comment or ask one question is more of a hassle than texting.

Phone call"
"Hey man, whats up"
"Nothing much you"
"Same same"
What are you doing tonight"
bleh bleh ble

blah
blah

Text:
You going to the bar tonight
Yup 10:30
See you there.

Done.

Uhhh, not sure if someone mentioned it or not...

My kids text message because we pay for unlimited text messaging for them. It's fairly cheap; far far cheaper than the phone bill would be if they made phone calls during the day (they have to keep regular phone calls to a minimum.)

Oh, and for you geezers (like me) who don't realize it, there's smart text messaging - you can set it so that it automatically completes words for you, and it intelligently figures out which letter you meant, so you don't have to press a number key more than once. I was amazed at how fast my kids could type using that.

Not even.

"What time?"
"Be there at 10:30"
"see you there."

^^ That took a total of 13 seconds to say.

amjohns5, you talk to your "friends" the way you want, and let others talk the way THEY want. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you have to cry about it.

T9 is pretty sweet and even better depending on how good your dictionary is that it's reading from. I know my dad thought it was pretty nifty when I showed it to him having never really used a cell phone before.

Also, some phones have predefined messages that you can use. My phone has 10 defined messages like, "When can we meet?", "Where are you?", "Where is the meeting?", "Talk to you soon", "What is your number?" (don't get this one... you're texting them based on their number :p), "Talk to you soon", etc.

Listen kid, you're still not getting it. I'm going to make this as simple as possible.

With regard to the example quoted above, you're right the phone call would be short and sweet, but texting took 2, maybe 3 messages, which is also quick, easy, and much less invasive than a phone call.

Your original rant is about kids having conversations with 20+ texts. You somehow, magically believe that these kids should instead have a 30 sec. phone conversation. What you still don't seem to understand, after it has been spelled out numerous times, is that these kids would still be talking about the same stupid shit for 20 minutes on the phone, except this time you could hear the idiots talking. Now, for the last time, which would you rather see/hear? A person sending text messages for 20 minutes -OR- listening to some idiot talking about nothing for 20 minutes. Those are your only two choices.

I hate text messages because they cost extra $$$ - I already paid for the minutes, so I want to use them. Any time someone sends me a text message I ask them to not do it again because of extra costs. Just call me, if I'm busy I'll call you back later.

'Dude, you free? I can drop by for 30 mins before I head to work.'
'Ya cool.'

That's how 90% of my SMS conversations go. Now that I think of it, that's also how 90% of my telephone conversations go.
