What the hell happened to the front page?

looks a lot worse then it used to 🙁

i hope they didnt pay for that! wow.... you might as well put scrollbars on those well defined frames :/

I don't understand the hate for the white space. It looks clean.

Glad there is a topic about this. Wasn't like this a few hours ago.

Put it this way: for a second I wondered why the hell the shitty looking BGR or Engadget website loaded instead of AT.

Not a fan of all these websites going "shitty" Metro.

Wow this is bad. Its even worse than The Verge.

Yeah, if I paid money for this by a "professional" I'd be asking for my money back or at minimum a fix.

This isn't Metro. This is just throwing shit up in a clusterfuck. Metro is a simplified interface and this is the total opposite.

Looking at the FP makes me feel cross-eyed for some reason. There's a big content-format-contrast issue of some sort.

Too messy. I ignored the right-hand column at first because my mind assigned it to "ad crap". Then I recalled that I have ad blocker on and that those were stories over there. The Pipeline section and Tweet section don't do anything for me.

Looks more like Ars Technica, I like it.

Ars looks way better than this mish mash.

ars use uses gray as a background as its not eye blindingly bright

Its not just that. Just look at how the stories/content are laid out. Its similar but so much better. More consistent layout for each topic with differences (like featured articles, their little grouping of links to other stories they think are worthwhile, etc) made more apparent. Hell you can adjust the background to be dark if you want. Waaaaaay better layout and more features to boot.

The absolute worst aspect of the new setup is that top menu/topic layout. I could deal with the rest but that part alone needs a complete redo.

This will take my interest in AT's main page down another peg. I already barely read their content any more as it is. Some of it is still good but most I couldn't care less about, and this makes finding the stuff I want to read even more of a hassle.

At least the awful DailyTech "news" is even more marginalized.

gray text on gray is BAD.

the entire color palette is BAD.

the solid white background is BAD.

the different shades of ugly blueish teal is BAD.

I guess I like the layout of the 3 levels of navigation at the top of the page. I really only add this as I struggled to look for something, anything, I like about the new design. In fact it's just the only thing I don't hate. That's just me though. I'm sure the teeners and 20 something facebookers and tweeters will love it.

Edit: If you're going to redesign the site to add more focus on mobile, why not give the ability to read it on my iPhone vertically? There is no option to increase font size that I can find, and the page is laid out in a way that doesn't allow zooming in far enough without having to scroll back and forth to read each line.

I'm not a fan. I don't like transparency or serif fonts. I also don't care for the Metro-esque flat, colored squares. Finally, the pure white background is just too much. All of my monitors are color calibrated, and pure white backgrounds are just terrible.

Man, I didn't even notice the menu animations.

I don't want to sound just another cynical anonymous critic since I read the front page pretty often, but this is bad. Almost as bad as http://www.nola.com/.

Just to add here what Anand posted in the comments:

So the previous site design featured black text on a white background, the differences being that this redesign uses white as the main background color as well (the margins are white instead of blue) and comments are over a white background vs. light blue.

Do you believe the eyestrain is caused by the white margin color or the comment background color, or both?

Do any of these options make it any better?

Take care,

So feedback is welcome (but try to keep it constructive). I'm just the informant here as I have absolutely no say in the web design but since there's been quite a bit of feedback, I'm sure Anand can implement something to satisfy as many users as possible.

A bit of color at the sides (maybe even a selectable shade?) is a fantastic idea 🙂 Aside from toning down the side banners (and the wish for adjustable column width), I like the new site layout.

Don't feel too bummed about the AT crowd. They do this this with pretty much everything. I'd be hard pressed to find one example of anything that was created or changed, that received its own AT thread where anything but the majority of comments are fit in the slots of "Do not like change!" "A 5 year old could have done better!" and "Pointy elbows, would not bang!".

Nerds, in general, tend to have the tendency of being overly critical to the point where they don't feel normal if they *don't* find a problem with it. They can be safely ignored, in a focus of feedback to people less biased towards narcissism.

I think it looks fine.

Some users might like a theme option sort of like how you can turn Ars from white to black.

I dont like it at all, and it has nothing to do with change because I dont even remember what the last version looked like

Right now, it looks so cluttered, like they tried to cram way too much stuff into just one page... Particularly the "pipeline stories" stuff, it just doesnt work
