I dunno, it seems like website designers for a technology website should start designing for vaguely modern hardware. :p

Is there no way of having the page dynamically scale to the space?

Just having a really long narrow strip of content that you scroll down just feels... claustrophobic?

there is, but it's a pain in the ass to do properly, not so much the technical aspect as the the UX part of it, it just gets very cluttered and not so userfriendly.

personally I'd have made some different choices on the little things but overall I'm fine with the new design.

Looks terrible IMO. Bad color scheme that looks corporate and boring, like a dozen faceless white guys dressed in business suits are gonna fall out of every weblink on the page... There's also little to no discernible structure at the top of the page with links and menus in layers, all with different fonts and design, and multiple columns just makes it difficult to get a clear picture of what's going on and find what stuff is new/has changed since last visit.

Also, very poor use of page width. People generally don't have their monitors rotated into portrait mode... The only major website that I know of with a worse design than this is Hexus.

Its weird though.

Like if all DVDs and Blurays were released at SD 4:3 stereo because thats what a lot of TVs are.

At some point webdesign needs to push forwards a bit.

Yup, I'm not too fond of theverge front page but their internal pages make good usage of my 30" monitor.

I rather read down than long sentences across my screen. Isn't the optimal line length about 66 characters across anyway?

Looks more like Ars Technica, I like it.

Hm. I think that is precisely the reason I don't like it.

I'm sure they'll do some tweaking to the colors, font sizes, etc. Right now though, this new design is like those gaming cases that scream colors, and lots of things yelling at you "Look at me! Look at me!". The old design was distinctive from a lot of tech sites out there, and I guess I felt it had class.

Another thing is the merging of adverts with actual content. I completely understand why this is, and it's just following the general trend. Frankly, other sites do this much more than AnandTech, so I shouldn't complain.

On the other hand, all the functionality things Anand mentioned are awesome.

A lot of sites are designing their MAIN page to be viewable on mobile platforms, particularly smartphones, and just getting rid of the mobile version of the site. See: Anandtech, Engadget

that does not change the fact that a pure white background is a dumb fuck decision

I swear it gets worse each generation.
They went on and on about how awesome widescreen displays were and never did their site ever properly take advantage of it.
BUT, they will go out of their way to make it mobile friendly.
Fuck heads.

Really emphasizes how hideously ugly the anandtech logo is. They need to update that.

I like the old one (the one in the upper left of the forums pages) rather than the trend following "candy" look of the current. And if you mean update the current used logo for their front page, I am all for it. Bring back the paintbrushed dash in the A and not this silly jolly rancher melted jump.

It looks more hipster and trendy rather than serious.

Yup, trying too hard to be a general interest site like everyone else, when it used to be a fine place to find in-depth info that appealed to real computing enthusiasts.

Good news (unlike the tiny screen bretheren) you can fit another browser/program side by side of your new slimmed down site.

I don't understand the hate for the white space. It looks clean.

The logo looks so out of place also the avert at the top is terrible.

Looks clean for the first five seconds. Now do some long reading versus one with a background or empty space that has a softer color. Which is more easier on the eyes?

Empty space is good. It gives separation, much like margins around a normal document. I also don't want to keep track of what line I am on after a billion of characters on the previous line (but that is what highlighting is for with your pointing device).
