Haven't turned it on yet. When it's on, I set it 78-80. Ceiling fans keep it coolish, and I'm outside. That feels cool after roasting in 85+ weather.

I've been using a system for a while that is pretty effective.

1) Don't turn one the air as soon as it gets hot. Live with the heat as long as you can stand it. My house usually gets over 90; the only way I can sleep is with a fan blowing right at me.

I can usually last 1 1/2 - 2 weeks.

2) Turn the air on, but only reduce the temp in small increments. I begin around 88 and gradually turn down from there until I'm comfortable.

3) As soon as your comfortable stop reducing. I end up around 80. Since I climatize myself 80 now feels like 70 used to feel.

My summer electric bills are a great deal smaller than they used to be.

I try avoiding turning on the AC as much as possible to save on electricity. Instead, I'll use fans, a swamp cooler, and rotate through several of those gel bed pads. I haven't turned on the AC for the past 4-5 years now. . . in Southern CA. . . during the recent heat waves and drought.

I set it to the Dehumidifier function and it gets down to about 56. The room isnt 56, just the AC.

"10". 😉 It's a window unit. Which won't turn on if the outdoor temperature falls into the 50s. 😡 I can't sleep if the temperature is over 74°F. So I turn it on at night, let the temperature go down to around 70°F, and hope it doesn't rebound too much.

I usually set mine to 19C (66F) based on the sensor in my hallway, but it's rare it will actually reach that temp upstairs, meanwhile it will be like 17C in the living room. So I usually manually turn it off when I'm comfortable. I never let it run when I'm not home, but I might start it from work an hour before I head home just so I can walk into a cool house.

Generally I try to tough it till 7pm though since that's whene hydro cost is like half the price of during the day. This is where a solar setup would be nice to have as I could generate my own power at peak of day. Need a pretty serious inverter to run a central AC unit though.

Off at the moment, and next week will be in the 60s, but once summer kicks in I think I'll live a little and set it to 72. I usually keep it around 73-74. Off when I'm at work, and probably 76 or off when I go to sleep.

Dang man, must be hot in some places you guys live. Like setting it at 76 would just be the same as not setting it at all and letting the apartment get warm naturally. It would get about that hot in there with the outside temp around 90, which it has been for several days. Gonna be in the lower 80s starting today though, thankfully.

Same here. If I set my AC to 76 it would never properly dehumidify my home.
