Insulate your house above the minimum expected R rating, not just for ceilings but for walls and in some cases, floors too.

Our biggest leak was the attic ladder, I built a little box of insulation foam and tape and just put it over the hatch. I got a $250 credit for my insulation purchases (I would have received a bigger rebate if someone else installed it bu then I would have had to spend more money...)

I think our heating bill was reduced by 30% so I am anxious to see this month's bill.

And to the OP's question:
Cooling: 76 during the day; 72-73 at night.
Heating: 72 day; 70 night

I don't know where you live but you need a better AC. It gets hot as balls here with humidity so high that you have to chew the air before you breathe it but I set my AC at 75 and it doesn't run all day. I like it cold when I sleep so some nights I will turn it down to 70 and it keeps that too until I wake up and turn it back up.

74F during the day, 72F at night. Since I started working out M-Fs, I've been waking up sweating like crazy. At first I thought the A/C was on the fritz, but apparently night sweats are a symptom of increased metabolic rate...so that's good I guess.

I miss the days of being chilly in bed :(

I'm thinking about flipping my heat back on for the next few days. Fine by me, I'd much rather heat my house than cool it, and that's why I live in New England :)

77. The options given in the poll I assume are more typical settings for cold climates (or by transplants who moved to warm climates who are used to that particular setpoint).

So many people turn the thermostat lower when they sleep. I'm the opposite - if I'm not awake, I don't care how hot it is.

I find it's mostly to actually fall asleep. On hot nights I'll set mine low for like an hour. Then it will turn off whether or not it reached the set point since I'll probably be sleeping by then.

For the heat though in winter it's different. I just let the temp drop to like 12C since I won't care if I'm sleeping. It then starts up a few hours before I have to get up so it's not as hard to get up.

Yes plus your body temperature will sink while you sleep so you may wake up because you are to cold.
