It depends where you are in the world. European countries generally don't hold us in high esteem and think we're a bunch of ignorant cowboys. Asian countries on the other hand still think highly of us. A western education is highly coveted, and the elites send their children to our universities. Africa and Middle East believe our streets are paved with gold, and with the exception of Islamic radicals, most of them dream of the opportunity to immigrate here.

I haven't met too many Europeans who think that way. Have you ever been to any of those countries? There are a few, to be sure, but the only ones that I've seen giving grief to Americans are generally homeless drunks.

dude. You are 100% clueless on this issue.

#1 country for higher education/research in the world, By FAR. Just look at the yearly student visas granted. Even after 9/11 it dwarfs anywhere else. Hell, each concentrated area in the US (North East, Chicago, West Coast, South East) of research and education individually dwarfs any other country.

Ok, now some positives:

Data centers (I could be wrong, but my guess is that more then 50% of sites are hosted in major US DCs)
Defense systems
Hospitality (ex: allowing Mexicans to have a good place to stay)

But he said Europe, and Europe isn't a country. Yet. By number of research papers produced and various other popular rankings Europe does more research than the USA. All the best new experiments are being built in Europe. Number of student visas granted, while impressive, can be accounted for by the fact most travelling students want to go to an English speaking University, which leaves few choices, America being by far the largest of those.

But I also mentioned that of the most concentrated regions in the US for higher education, each one of those regions outstrips any individual European country in terms of international acclaim.

Not sure what type of research or "experiments" you're talking about, but in sheer volume of medicine, biotech, materials science, textiles, genomics....no one is anywhere close to the US. Taiwan and a few other Asian countries are great at manufacturing computer parts, Japan is excellent with gadgets and tech, but don't forget where the volume of materials research comes from.

True, we've been hurt by 8 years of Bush, tons have fled the US due to his archaic knuckle-dragging fear of science and knowledge, but this is a recent phenomenon. The only major thing Europe has over the US is CERN, whose type of work was based wholly in Chicago over the previous 3 decades+

$14 billion suddenly available in NIH grants = shitload of returning research over the next 2 years
