Entertainment. No where else are entertainment figures paid so much for contributing so little to society. Namely professional sports players and actors.

Depends on what weight you give entertainment in society. You're very statement contradicts itself since they only get paid so much because the industry generates so much...so in must be *extremely* important to society since the respective people are spending so much on it. :)

It depends where you are in the world. European countries generally don't hold us in high esteem and think we're a bunch of ignorant cowboys. Asian countries on the other hand still think highly of us. A western education is highly coveted, and the elites send their children to our universities. Africa and Middle East believe our streets are paved with gold, and with the exception of Islamic radicals, most of them dream of the opportunity to immigrate here.

Guitars? American Fenders and Les Pauls seem to retail for double the price of Mexican ones. Them Mexican craftsmen aren't bad at all though.
