Amazing, since all of the other dancers in the Digital Underground were very formally educated.....

Tupac went to some performing arts school in Baltimore I think. He was best friends with Jada Pinkett Smith.
And Jada Pinkett Smith is best known as Will Smith's Piece of Ass.

Actually I don't think people dislike Rap as much as they do the tools who try to potray it as some kind of musical genius. It's not musical genius, it's marketing genius and these rappers are laughing all the way to the bank .

Your poll options stink, I don't like rap or Marilyn Manson...

What is so wrong with rap music?

Aside from the fact that rap musicians don't seem to have the discipline to actually learn an instrument, or that the lyrics are generally offensive to me, and that it represents a portion of our culture that I'm not a member of or ever will be, nothing.

Who are you to judge it?

I have the right not to listen to or like whatever the fvck I want, Who the hell are you to challenge my personal preferences or right to have them?

One day people will learn not to make why-do-you-hate-rap? threads and let people get on with their hating quietly. All these threads do is make it louder and harder for me to hear my Notorious BIG albums. :p

Originally I hated rap because I didn't consider a thumping beat and some scratching to be music. (I realize not all rap is confined to that, and some artists include instruments of different types, but I'm talking about the rap that I see as a typical average Joe. The stuff I see on BET when I flip through the channels or hear other people blasting from their cars in traffic.) Then as I got a little older I began to listen to some of the lyrics. All I ever hear from typical rap is stuff about booties, money, pimp rides, being a gangsta, flashing guns, money, and bling bling, whatever other offensive drivel they spew.

I think it's incredible that anyone can be portrayed in such a way through music and music videos, and it's so freaking emulated. People walking around with their pants sagging down to their knees, talking like "Yo yo dawg, check out my shizzle in this hea nizzle fizzle yizzle wizzle." Rap music like that does nothing but encourage people to act like idiots, and yet the artists make cubic asstons of money doing it.

Keep in mind, like I said, this is judging off common rap. The rap I see and hear on a day to day basis, not being a fan of rap and going out of my way to listen to it. There are probably some rap artists out there that are respectable and don't follow into what I just described, and to them, my hat goes off.

Oh, and I feel justified in judging it because I think the image is rediculous, the language is offensive, and it's everywhere. I can't escape the thumping from other peoples subs, or my own television.

The only problem I have is when they come up with assinine lyrics just to make it rhyme. It sounds too funny to be serious. The words... "you've got to be kidding me" come to mind.

Oh yes... and the repetitive chorus line that runs about 5 times each minute. That about does it for me. JayZ comes to mind. I can't stand that guy's music.

Not all is bad of course... but it's obvious some rappers make their money the easy way. I'm left wondering... who actually buys that $#it.

Once again we have come to the underlying problem... people hear whats on TV and the radio, and then generalize rap. I like rap/hip-hop but I can't STAND most of what you hear now. Outkast is one of the few exceptions, they are one of the better 'popular' acts around right now. Acts like Jurassic 5 as ndee mentioned, Talib Kweli, The Roots(they even have their own instruments!), Nas, just to mention a few, do not get heard on BET or the radio, but they're among the best of the genre. It isn't all killing and drug dealing.

Nelly != rap. 50 cent is as pre-packaged as Britney Spears, just geared at a different audience. Milkshake song = garbage.

People will like what they like...but IMO it is unfair to judge a whole genre based on just what you hear on the radio. Do you classify rock as horrible because of garbage packaged bands like Sum 41 or Blink 182?

Disclaimer: I like a lot of different music... not just a rap fan.

"Why did a majority of white people think OJ should have fried, while a majority of black people thought he was innocent? "

Damn, you got that right! Rap is to music, as OJ is to innocent.

I like rap music but its wrong to criticize people for criticizing the music. Its their opinion plain and simple, who cares of they dont like it?

Today I happened to be reading Anti-Semite and Jew by Sartre. I'm pretty sure it's relevant to racism in America today. Here's a morsel: This word opinion makes us stop and think. It is the word a hostess uses to bring to an end a discussion that threatens to become acrimonious. It suggests that all points of view are equal; it reassures us, for it gives an inoffensive appearance to ideas by reducing them to the level of tastes...In the name of democratic institutions, in the name of freedom of opinion, the anti-Semite asserts the right to preach the anti-Jewish crusade elsewhere.

I come from a long line of racists. Any hatred that I was taught will die with me. There's always another side to people, but it's just hidden behind a smile these days. "I don't mean to sound racist, but..."

We need to get on the same page here..at least respect the differences that exist between human beings. People are tried by the judge, jury, and executioner known as the court of public opinion. Why did a majority of white people think OJ should have fried, while a majority of black people thought he was innocent? I just don't understand what's so hard about having a little empathy...I can respect anyone else's point of view, because they all fall into the realm of Human Experience and I can relate. But I can't hold my tongue when I see opinions that obviously come from some fear or insecurity.

Not to completely turn this thread a whole new direction but I dont see a parallel in your two examples. Someone not liking rap music is not the same as them proclaiming to hate blacks. I dont like screaming death metal bands, what ethnicity do I loathe?

Your comments inspire me to form the opinion that you are the type of person who tries to bring race to the forefront of every topic. To me this does more to fan the flames of racism than anything else. Any ethnicity that has a history of being oppressed is sure to have some sort of chip on their shoulder. While greatly reduced in it's intensity, racism is of course still alive and well today. I couldnt give you specific examples being white, but I'm not blind. I think this was a major cause of the split opinion on OJ's case. To me the evidence was overwhelmingly against him, but all of a sudden you have an officer on the case who drops the N-word and OJ is on trial purely because of racism? Please. The defense was faced with such an uphill battle in their case that when Mark Fuhrman came into the picture, they emphasized this point so much that it frenzied the massses. Now instead of a wealthy, former athlete who appears to have murdered two people. You have a black man who is accused of killing two white people and was targeted by the racist LAPD. That is why you see such a disparity in the opinion of whites and blacks on the issue.

Simply not liking a musical taste again does NOT equal racism towards a certain group. Is every black person in America required to listen to Hip-Hop in order not to be labeled as a Uncle Tom? Should I go buy country music albums because I'm white, and if I dont listen to "white music" I hate my own people? Find a new cause...

wow this thread is deep. If you dont like rap music, dont listen to it, if you like it, then pick up the latest whoo kid CD. Most people who seem to not like rap say so because its a lack of talent, its repetitive, bla bla bla. That may be true, but they are living their dream. They had a plan, and achieved it. In the process, they became celebrities.
Id rather have no talent and have a boatload of cash, then to have some talent and be a working stiff like myself.

Where's the option for dumbest thread and WORST POLL ever?

He critisizes people for critisizing Rap? Does he get the stupidity in that?
And a little more bias in your poll would help your arguement I think ;)

You've got to be kidding! Their Hey Ya song is so bad that it's laughable. It proves that if you tell a huge lie often enough (Outkast is good) people will actually start believing it.

1 bad song does not make a group bad. I don't care for that song, either.

Hey if they get rich I seriously doubt they'd mind being a mere footnote in music history!
