There is a difference between musical talent and marketing talent, you're right. That is the reason those with talent are rarely popular. Record companies back those with a certain image they know will sell records. A large majority of the independent and underground artists do not fit this image.

I would point to Eminem as one of the most talented and popular rappers. The way he puts his lyrics together and fits them into the songs just blows my mind. He's quick, and he's witty in a lot of his songs. When I bought his Eminem Show cd I started listening to the other songs on there besides the hit "Without Me" and I was surprised at how intuitive his jabs and jokes were.

There was some kind of awards show on tv 2 weeks or so ago, and he comes out on stage wearing pink ski goggles, pink ski bibs and the most enormous retarded looking shoes I've ever seen. When I see that I know I'm not mistaken in thinking he stinks because he's obviously compensating for it with his flamboyance. He is the perversion of rap in it's most heinous. Now 50 Cent, Nelly and these other new comers may have changed the style of rap towards a more pop main stream culture, they don't make fools out of themselves on national television by dressing like an idiot. I used to like Outkast when I first heard his song Sorry Miss Jackson, it had depth, he was singing about a man being pushed out of his son's life due to divorce. Since then he's gone downhill imo.
Outkast complaints aside I think the new stuff we're seeing is kind of a blend of rap and pop. It's not the same as what Biggie, Big Pun, Tupac, and Dre used to put out. That's alright though. There's got to be change and the new stuff is pretty decent, for the most part. Nothing beats the original beats though.

Outkast isn't one guy.

For those of you who are basing your opinions on what is played on the radio then you are missing out on a lot. Radio plays what they feel is best for the lowest common denominator and will make the biggest bucks. POSITIVITY and DEEP doesn't cut it. That is why you will rarely hear KRS ONE for instance being played. Heavens forbid they stray away from the bling bling, women, pimpin' and cars themes. So you are hearing one tiny segment of the hip hop world.
Again, if you don't like it one way or the other good for you I will still support it. Besides, country music disgusts me to no end and I avoid it at all costs so I can see how some just don't like one particular genre of music.
Anything on the radio is bad (well, 90% at the least). Take country, for instance. There is good country...like CDB...unfortunately I know people with whom I must suffer local wang-twang lost-your-girl-and-your-truck radio...I have country that's good, but you won't hear it there. I have rock that's good and will never see the program director's desk lamp. etc.
It's like food. There are no types of food that are bad, but the good places of any kind are not going to have golden arches or an oven mitt cowboy hat thing, or even moderately literate cows. They would, for example, have a fat guy in a white apron smiling in neon with a sign, "Nu-way Weiners (since 1916)."

We should organize a music exchange: rappers vs. metalheads or something like that. The metalheads buy the rappers a CD off of half.com (or whatever) and vice versa. Each pair would try to provide a CD that would positively impact their partner in regards to their hated genre of music.

It would be a way of putting our money where are fingers are.

You've got to be kidding! Their Hey Ya song is so bad that it's laughable. It proves that if you tell a huge lie often enough (Outkast is good) people will actually start believing it.

Outkasts first Album, Southerplayalisticcadillacmusak is one of the 'better' rap CDs. They had some truely GOOD lyrical skills back in the day. So very smooth lyrical flows. After that album, they were never as good.

Outkast - Git Up, Git Out. 7:27minutes.

Truely great song, with a positive message to.

I used to like DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince when they were around, and I think Will Smith is cool. That's rap music, right? So there, I like rap! :p

I just wanted to post in the thread with the worst poll ever.

Oh, I dislike rap, because to me a lobotomized bovine with mad cow disease could make better music.

Continue, please.
