It does a little, somehow, but ... exogenous GABA does not penetrate the blood–brain barrier; it is synthesized in the brain. It is synthesized from glutamate. GABA puts you to sleep, melatonin helps you stay asleep. Narcotics = GABA boosters; hypnotics = melatonin boosters. GABA makes you drowsy.Does GABA help you? I'm always fighting anxiety and am looking for alternatives to traditional medicine which isn't helping.
But it's not going to overcome any cortisol boosts making you more alert. Use phosphatidyl-serine for that, OR Siberian eleuthero for industrial strength calming effects. Taurine also has a GABA-like effect, binds with the some of the same receptors IIRC. I've also come to respect the power of glycine for quieting any burning nerves.
