I bought new headphones from Amazon on Black Friday, just for work, I wanted something cheap(ish). They came with 1/4" out so I went to a bunch of stores (Best Buy, DollarStore, etc.) and after ~2 hours, I couldn't find any 1/4->1/8 adapter. I'm bitching to my dad over video chat over this when I notice a crease at the end - headphones are really 1/8 with a 1/8->1/4 attached. Daaamn, did I feel stupid....
It could've been worse, I would've bought it if I had found it for ~$10, and headphones were only $60, it'd be like 10%-15% of the total price.

Just had a hard drive fail on my file server. Funny thing is I was thinking the other day how I have not had any failures in a while. I jinxed it!

Now to make sure I pull the right drive out... I have documentation and double checked but it always makes me nervous anyway lol.

If I'm really stuck I just DD the entire array (a read to /dev/null) and then the one that's not blinking is the one that failed. But the spreadsheet works fine. Fancier storage systems will actually have a red indicator, but this is a DIY setup. The hardware does not really know it's even raided let alone that the drive failed.

Had a spare drive of same size so I'm doing some testing on it now, then will add it to array. With any new drive I tend to do a full zero write, then zero read. That ensures there's no bad sectors.

Ah, quite the pickle I have... Listed something on Craigslist, but I got two responses relatively quickly. Feels like I under-priced it. Looking at some Amazon listings, I may be $20-$40 low.

First guy said he'd get back to me. Still hasn't. Second guy, I said I'd tell him if the first guy dropped out. But he didn't have the courtesy to even respond with an "okay." Should I be proactive or give it a week and relist it higher...

Freshman year in high school (1983), we had an acoustic coupler TTY terminal in ONE classroom. Same year, Dad went to Toys 'R' Us and bought a Commodore 64 + 1541 Disk drive. Went to a local geek shop and picked up a 300 baud modem.

Think of it. Toys 'R' Us was further along the technology curve than the schools. That was fucking sad.

Future accident report: It appears that the failure was caused by two screws extending into the barrel…

LOL, indeed. Yeah ideally I'd have the tools myself; I prefer to be self-sufficient, but in this case I'm not sure I really need them since I don't plan on building any other ARs (especially ones with standard mil-spec front sight bases). Although the drill I have now isn't a very good one. Hell, I think the biggest thing I need is a vice. Maybe I'll look into the drill/ream process and what it requires and think about it.

Hmmm, I guess my first world problem today is that it's my turn for the on-call rotation after work. This evening and tomorrow evening and then I also have it this weekend Friday-Sunday. I hate working when I'm not at work. FML

Doh, that sucks. Kinda funny I was wondering about that recently if those things are standard or not and what happens if you break it. I guess they're hard to come by. Kinda annoying if you have to replace the whole machine when it still works.
