Sorta a first world problem I guess, a tough decision I need to make. So the asshole IT manager at the hospital I used to work at retired. I had quit there mostly because of him. I was working for the same company I work for now as a contractor, but he was basically my boss. He eventually in-sourced and hired his own guys (makes sense for that environment) and around that same time I got my current job so I moved but stayed with same company.
Now I have a potential opportunity to go work back there but FOR them, as I'm sure if I was to put in my resume they'd probably hire me back. Everybody there liked me, except for the IT manager. Oddly he never did find a replacement for me, as his requirements were ridiculous. There is no actual job opening though, so this is all hypothetical.
I love my current job and the hours, and it probably even pays a bit more than I'd make there. I've actually hit 80k one year, usually do about 75k. The problem with my current job is that the company is constantly doing restructuring, nobody knows from one day to the next if they'll have a job, so there is always that looming stress. It's been that way since the very beginning that I started working there, and even before. Lot of people have been laid off in the process too, so it's not just talk, there is action too.
So now I need to decide if I move back to the hospital which would be more secure, or stick to this gravy train with a slightly higher risk of potentially losing my job in the future.
This is a scenario I've often run through my mind, but now it's for real. I think I will stick with my current job though. Next summer I will hit my 10 year anniversary and also get another week of vacation.
We just secured a 3 year union contract (well 2 because it took over a year to do it) and just based on what is in it I'm fairly faithful there's no plans to shut us down. We are actually getting more work.
Decisions decisions...
