I got a $1000 bonus once and considered it an insult. The reason I got it was for saving the company I worked for aprox 11.1 million dollars a year by myself by designing a software solution to a big problem, and I did it in less than a year. I was an hourly associate at the time making 11.05 an hour if I remember correctly. The management solution was to throw payroll at it, my solution was to design a middleware application.

I got a bonus of 00.009% of what I saved the company in the first year alone. The solution is still being used, nearly unaltered from my original design from about 5 years ago. So I saved the company more than 50 million so far and I got an $1k extra for it. If you count my pay, the company got a 165,431% return on their investment.

If you really care about the associate, give them a measurable percent of what they are worth.

I guess it didn't occur to you at the time to either patent it (would probably take too long) or sell it to them under contract? I mean...you got ripped off, my friend. Sounds like a part of my life...I thought I was the only one.

So....you don't eat anything wheat or flour-based. NO bread of any kind. NO pizza. No "dough" so to speak.

Nor do you eat dairy products. At all. ("...and all that shit...")

So, what DO you eat in order to stay alive?
Please quote where I said I do not eat anything wheat or flour-based. "All that shit" refers to the stuff that comes in the basket, not every fucking food based on wheat or dairy.

Did your boss take credit for it? Sounds like only way they could be that tight.

Is he a hard worker? Do you value his employment? Give him $1000. When things pick up, he might flip this mid30s job into a mid40s job.

Am I saying you'll keep him on board by giving him a bonus? No, definitely not. But you can be sure he'll be working hard until he does leave, which is very reassuring.

If it's below a few hundred, a gift card might be better since the IRS loves to withhold so much on bonuses.

14% bonus this year, but only a 1% raise. I work for an employee owned engineering firm and luckily we're still staying pretty busy.

wow i hate reading employment threads on this board... we didn't get any COLA but we always get a xmas bonus, depending on how long you've been here it is either 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, or 1/1 paycheck. We get many other benefits that other jobs would think are downright insane, but for us it is business as usual...

Used to be around 5 figures. Has since dropped to the low 4 figures. I'm not expecting anything this year, given the situation.

One year a company I worked for cut annual raises, and canceled Xmas bonuses a week before they were to be handed out.

Day after canceling bonuses all the top managers showed up in company leased Benz SUV's.

I quit that day and all of their best people were gone within two weeks. Their best people went to work for the competition who took away all of their money making accounts.

Within a year they went from being a reasonably large multi-services (from IT to various oil-field services) company to only offering maid service to a very small chain of fleabag hotels for $11 per contract hour.

No Xmas bonus but we should get something by end of april which is our Q4 and hopefully things pick up a lot! I got 15% but no raise but that 15% turns out to be about 7.5% after taxes etc but hey I can avoid paying less!

Give the dude 1k
