What are realistic expectations when negotiating for a new car?

Wait until half an hour to closing time on a Friday, show up with enough cash in a briefcase to buy the car you want at MSRP, but be like 10k short. It's a quick and easy sale without dealing with the bank BS if they are willing to drop the price. If not, well they lost out on an easy sale. Try it again with another dealership the next week.

End of month and end of year used to be crunch time for sales people to qualify for bonuses. Might have to wait until after Christmas to see if the dealers want to deal.

Went to the initial dealer with the 2024 blue one today and they budged from $52,300 to $51,000 and the manager said that is as low as he can go. He said it's not just an "end of the month" offer and will last as long as the rebates and stuff are still available, as well as the car. I walked and didn't get it. I'm not sure if they will budge lower.

They flat out asked what price would be a no brainer and I would buy today, and I told em $48k, which I knew was too low but that was the truth. I even told em at $50k now that I've checked out other cars that I would hesitate today to purchase it.
That's your best move yet. Do not back off $48K. You are going after a fully loaded Telluride and those have higher margins and more room to move. Hold the line on $48K. Give them no more information and let them stew for awhile. They will call you back and tell them not to call unless they can do $48K.

If you're still at this on Monday, call your local DMV office with the VIN and the selling numbers. They should be able to give you a very accurate cost for title and licensing...then tell the dealer to shove the other junk fees.
Legally speaking the only fee you have to pay are sale tax, title and license. Anything that is not taxable at the end of the sale is a junk fee. A car dealership would be out of business or heavily fined by a state if they tried to fudge sale tax, title and license fees. When a dealer tells you that the doc fee is standard. Lower your offer the cost of the doc fee accordingly. You have a family to feed. Remind them of that.

Yeah.... That's almost certainly not going to work. I doubt a dealership wants to deal in physical cash.

Exactly…but by calling DMV, the OP will know the licensing fees. I’ve never bought a car, new or used, where I didn’t get a refund check for “licensing fees overpayment” from the dealership a few weeks later.
I get the dealerships trying to get that extra fee…it pays the costs of financing department and licensing employees salaries…but, fck that…take it out of the profit of the sale.

I gotta say, I like the looks of the seats in that ride. They LOOK hella comfortable. We have friends who have an older (2012) Kia Soul and it’s surprisingly comfortable.
I’m very surprised though…the Telluride only has an EPA rating of 23 mpg/highway. That’s the same as my F 150 SuperCrew with 3.5 TT Ecoboost.

"YMMV" but the Soul is a lot better than 23 MPG highway across all variants:

Yeah in hindsight I should have definitely said I'm looking for like $48k out the door. I realize that is probably not realistic for a car that has an MSRP around $51k, but the worst that would happen is they don't go that low.

And yeah the 2024 and 2025 are very similar. The specific thing I like about the 2025 is the black badging on the exterior. And I believe that is like an X-line thing only. Aside from that as you mentioned they are virtually identical to my knowledge.
The higher price the vehicle is MSRP the more margin is on it. There is room. On a 50k vehicle, they are probably at under 40k dealer cost. KIA came into the country with 10k cars that none of the domestics were able to offer.

Yeah I didn't do anything today at all with the car stuff I just chilled out.

Yesterday I did hit up dealership B about the black one and they said the way they are breaking it down for me to get to $51k is because of 2024 rebates and maybe the military incentive added, which it isn't since I'm not military. I let them know I'm not military and left it at that and heard nothing back today.

Since I'm not in a hurry, I'm going to just chill this week and see what happens. I'll keep an eye out on the inventory around as well and see if anything else pops up or not and just slow play it at this point.

They are comfortable and there is a lot of space in the 2nd row of seats. I sat in the seat right behind the driver seat when I had it set to where I would drive, and I had plenty of leg room with some to spare. My kids will have more than enough room.

When I drove the black one it was night time and I had never seen the interior of the car at night. It was REALLY nice with all the ambient lighting, which you can turn off if you don't like either. The lady showed me how you can change the colors of the ambient lighting to whatever you want it to be on the touch screen. It's basically one of those color wheels you see in photoshop.

Lol I had a phone call from dealership A about the blue one but I was at the gym and didn't pick up.

Then like 15 minutes later while I'm still at the gym, I had a call and text message from dealership B about the black one and they are now offering it for $500 less which is $52k.

I plan to basically just let it stew for the week and keep being like "thanks but I'm going to keep looking" when they contact me and just see where it goes.

Don’t forget to reinforce your price limits…let them know that if they can’t meet your price…or less, you’re not going to buy from them.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear…the Telluride has the 23 mpg EPA rating. Fixed it.
This isn't surprising at all. The Telluride is a 3-row SUV and HMG's ICE drivetrains have never been fuel efficient (compared to Toyota or Honda).

Their hybrid sedans (ELANTRA and SONATA) are pretty good.

Yeah I haven't called dealership A back but told B thanks but it's still more than I want to spend. She wanted me to come into the dealership today but I just told them there is no point for me to come in when it's not something I am going to buy.

I own an Elantra Hybrid and it's been pretty solid for the 2 years we've had it. Great gas mileage, nice set of features for the base hybrid trim, plenty of room for what my wife and I want and need a car for, and the general performance is fine for everyday driving. Plus, it was under $30k and doesn't cost a ton to insure it.

Yeah I believe your Elantra is best in its class, and I wasn't referring to just the impressive fuel economy.
My dad got a Corolla Hybrid about the same time, and it's a bit sad. The Toyota drivetrain is great, but the Hybrid exists in only a basic trim level. If you want better, you have to get a Prius instead.

No idea where CAFE standards are headed (probably nothing great for the next 4 years), but HMG will probably extend its hybrids to more models, such as the Telluride.

Seems a bit much to haggle over 2 grand on a 50k car.
4% savings is 4% savings regardless if it is an SUV, a house, or an item at a dollar store.

Why would anyone actually choose to throw away 2 grand when it just takes an hour or two haggling? I don't know where else some typical person can make $1000/hour (especially when savings aren't taxed).

I'm not sure that I can agree with you regarding Toyota hybrid only in basic trim levels. The Corolla Hybrid comes in 3 trims, up to their XLE which is far from their basic trim. https://www.toyota.com/corollahybrid/

Plus the Camry (they are now all hybrids so it isn't in the name) has even better highway fuel economy (47 MPG to 50 MPG) than the Corolla Hybrid (43 MPG to 46 MPG). The Camry is almost the same fuel economy as the Prius and has a whole lot more to offer. https://www.toyota.com/camry/

@Brainonska511 and I were referring to car purchases from two years ago. I don't think the 2022 Corolla Hybrid even had named trim levels but if it did, only the lower LE was available. Sorry I didn't mean to imply this is still the case, which you've corrected. Looks like they added the trim levels in MY2023.

My main point is that the Elantra Hybrid was much better regarded than the comparable Corolla in recent years.*

FWIW OP doesn't frequently buy a brand new car, so haggling for a great deal absolutely makes sense. As the old cliche goes, $2k saved is $2k earned.

* The gap has narrowed:
