I won't because I am not that type of person who will work 55-60 hours a week to get ahead. I like being with my family too much.

Plus, 100K is not equal to 100K everywhere.

I live in Louisiana and we have a decent house and pay a mortgage of 1,200 while there are some living in much higher cost areas paying more than that on rent.

Pay is relative to where you live.

I'm sure I could make a decent amount more if I were willing to move to a bigger city.

I'm in a simliar situation, except I have a stay at home wife so chances are we'll never hit the 100k mark. However housing where I live is so cheap, my house payment that includes escrow payments to insurance and taxes is <$600.

If everything goes according to plan, when I hit 29. I'm in animation school now, and my current teacher has been in the industry for a long time and says that after about 5 years animators make more than 100k.

I'm on track to do it this year, and I'm 31.

But, yeah... Making 100K after 6 to 8 years experience and/or 2 job changes sounds like a good goal in the NY area. You're probably NOT going to make it at your first job, though.

I teeter on 100k, but I'm miserable in my line of work. I'm in school, too, in an effort to jump ship and cut my earnings by 60% so I can be happy.

You'll understand once you get there.

Hahaha, cost of living FTW.

3 bedroom house, 2 cars paid for (99 and 04) and 3 kids.

I just broke 55 within the last year.

It aint what you make, its how far it takes you.

My mom lived in the Jersey area and worked in New York. We chatetd one time and even though she was clearing well over 100k I was doing better then her at less then half that.

Even New Yorks average wage is below 55k, London city workers have an average wage of 100k+ I think, but then living expenses is also far greater than NY.

I shot my chance to reach 100k anytime soon when I turned down a 40% + raise to switch companies.

Been workin for my company for 7 years now and they will let me move wherever I want and the job goes with me. I'll probably keep this ~55k job working out of home 4 days a week for a while. More money just doesn't seem worth it. It is what you get that isn't comparable to money.

Get a raise next week. Who knows!

Btw I just turned 24 if it matters even tho I'm no where near the 100k mark. I think my goal is more like 75k for the time being. Until gas is a ton more or COL shoots up. (Obviously working out of home the already high gas price is easier to take)

Yeah... Honestly, a $75K a year job in a low cost of living area is probably better than a $100K a year job in the Boston, NYC, or San Francisco metro areas. Your dollar is going go a LOT farther out there Iowa or Kansas! Those guys are probably not paying over $1,000 a month for rent or $4.50 a gallon for gas... yet.

Right now I'm on course to make about 62K this year. I'm 23. Pay raises arent the greatest around my job, I'm only expecting a 3% raise this year which is pretty much what everyone gets even if you are the most outstanding employee ever, our management doesn't care and only gives what they have to, which is 3%.

By about 28 or so I should be flirting right around 100K(only because of OT)

However if you want to include my significant other, within a year or 2 we should be able to be well above 100K combined income.

Rent will run 800-1200 depending what you get. We had a really, really nice apartment for 820. 2 bedroom, 2 bath, small kitchen, big living room with a deck that had been turned into a sunroom.

Gas is just under 4 most places.

You could probably land rent in the 6-8 range in a decent part of town if you step down to a 1 bedroom.

When I lived in KS it was 460/mo for a nice size 1 bdrm.

All depends how good at saving you are. Even at that time I lived in ks I made 39k/yr but saved 1k a month roughly.

1 job for the past 8 years. Software engineer. I'll probably break 6 figures in about 6 years. mostly thanks to inflation.

If this is your vision of success though, you need to re-evaluate your life. You sound like a status seeker. Just enjoy your damned life and make sure you got a good health plan. Remember, there are three things guaranteed in life. Death, taxes and illness.

besides, I have made more money off flipping my homes in the past. In a $500K-$550K home that is 2500 sqft. Not bad for married w/ 2 kids at 31. If we move one more time, I'll probably be debt free and in a 2000-2500 sqft home. now, that is living no matter how much you make.

Yeah we get it. Some people lie about their income... it happens on forums. Good lord. These posts are more common than the posts where people actually lie. It's gotten old... older than the soviet russia jokes.

I cleared it when I was really young, but these threads are practically parodies now as no one believes what anyone else says anyway.

I think people in America are conditioned on two extremes: On one, they're conditioned that everything should be theirs, and it's all a sense of entitlement; on the other, they're conditioned that none of it can be theirs, and you have to follow the same myopic paths that everyone else sets in order to flirt with the status quo.

I've seen talented people waste away because they were too timid to move things forward, too conditioned to think they have no choices. They get wrapped up in feeling their achievements lie in titles given by their companies and in an accumulation of responsibilities for which they aren't even compensated. This is all the while others profit from their use, because they know better. The difference between how much someone undersells and how much someone else oversells is the profit that most companies use to thrive, and it's alive and well in most companies.

In the end, it truly is about doing what makes you happy, imo; however, there's no sense in letting other people take your earnings and opportunity off the table either.

i graduated in may '05 with my masters, set a goal for myself of 6 figures in three years. I got annoyingly close but didn't reach it. I should reach in the next six months to a year. Oh well, I'm living a really nice life so I can't complain.

For me, the drive to reach the goal was there. Being Indian and choosing not to go into the medical field (i'm stereotyping, but in my family and friends it happens to be true), I am being judged on a different scale. Among my family, there are 2 surgeons, 2 pharmacists, and several engineers. Among my friends, I have several doctors, several dentists, and several lawyers. Mind you, they are all +/- 3 years my age. My income is considered bottom barrel in comparison. I have to work hard to get up the same level, mostly just to live the lifestyle that they have and that, by extension, I expect from myself.

But if we are counting stock options, I hit the 100k mark March 17, 2008. :)

What did you study? I'm starting to see a lot more Indians move away from IT, engineering, medicine, etc. and more into business. There's a tremendous surge of entrepreneurial activity in India, similar to what it was like in the US during the dotcom era. Seems a lot more want their MBA than anything else.
