Sincere appreciation for having an open mind on this subject. My opinion of you just went up considerably. :)

We all know Red is a closet conservative.. we'll have him trashing Obama in no time at this rate.

Aren't gun dealers happy about this?

They've been using this straw man to make a quick buck off assault weapons.

Sales have been brisk since McSame lost. Obama's win has been good for the gun industry.

"A straw man argument is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position. To "set up a straw man," one describes a position that superficially resembles an opponent's actual view, yet is easier to refute."

Banning assault weapons is the position of the administration. This does not qualify it as a "straw-man" argument when gun dealers say this.

Do you even know what the hell you say 1/2 the time?

well, as long as these weapons were used/mis-used on the street to kill innocent, I'm okay with having them...

then again, I would feel safer having them banned... but I don't see what the big deal is... why is this a 12 page thread?

 that has nothing to do with why cop-killer bullets are put into a separate category. I don't really have a position on this issue but I can see you didn't really address it.

Cop Killer bullets was another catch phrase made up on the fly by idiots. They basically want to ban all hollow point bullets... which will make many types of caliber very ineffective for stopping a intruder.

What's cool about using assault rifles for home defense is that they're awesome in confined spaces with the added bonus of shooting your kids through the walls when your unloading your full auto at the perp with the dragonskin body armor who needs to steal your TV for crack.

Are you a Democrat, a Republican, or a Redneck?

Here is a little test that will help you decide.

The answer can be found by posing the following question:

#You're walking down a
deserted street with your wife
and two small children.

Suddenly, an Islamic
Terrorist with a huge knife
comes around the corner,

locks eyes with you,
screams obscenities, praises
Allah, raises the knife, and charges at you.

You are carrying a
Kimber 1911 cal. 45 ACP, and you are an expert shot.

You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family.

What
do
you do?

............................................................

THINK CAREFULLY AND
THEN SCROLL DOWN:

Democrat's
Answer :

Well, that's not enough information to answer the question!
Does the man look poor or oppressed?
Have I ever done anything to him

that would inspire
him to attack?
Could we run away?
What does my wife think?
What about the kids?
Could I possibly swing the gun like a club
and knock the knife out of his hand?
What does the law say about
this situation?
Does the pistol have appropriate safety built into it?
Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind
of message does this send to society and to my children?
Is it possible he'd be
happy with just killing me?
Does he definitely want to kill me, or would
he be content just to wound me?
If I were to grab his knees and hold
on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me?
Should I call
9-1-1?
Why is this street so deserted?
We need to raise taxes, have paint and weed day

and make this happier, healthier street that
would discourage such behavior.
This is all so confusing!

I need to debate this with some friends

for few days and try to come to a consensus.

.....................................................................

Republican's
Answer:

BANG!

................................................................

Redneck's Answer:

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
BANG !
Click..... (Sounds of reloading)
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
BANG! BANG!
BANG! Click
Daughter: 'Nice grouping, Daddy!

Were those the Winchester
Silver Tips or Hollow Points?! '
Son: 'Can I shoot the next one?!'
Wife: 'You ain't taking that to the Taxidermist!

Okay.
No, you fool. But someday, even at home, I may need to.

I'm an Army Reservist. As such, I use essentially the same weapon whenever I'm on duty. Unfortunately, Reservists don't get much range time on Uncle Sam's dime, so it's up to each of us to practice on our own. Shooting is a perishable skill.

I'm just pissed that I waited this long to get one...

What is it with people and guns in this country? Yes, I know, it's a right.

I'm with you. I don't get it. It's like you're defending a body part. I just don't get the fanatacism revolving around guns.

Change the assault to the 1st amendment and tell us your opinion on that. It is only speech right? Well guns are a primary defense against the tyranny of govt and defense against criminals. Without the gun you can toss out the rest of your rights.

Right, because we constantly take up arms against the government. That didn't work out so well in 1863...

But it worked great in 1774

Owning guns isn't a big deal. Everyone should be able to. Eventually even I will want to own a gun.

But imho some guns (or should I say weapons) just shouldn't be in the hands of private individuals. Can't we all agree on at least that much?

Where we draw the line is anyone's guess. But this isn't some issue where opposing sides should just draw up false choices...common sense should prevail. Gun ownership rights isn't the problem, the TYPE of guns that should be available to private ownership is.

I am sorry if the opinion above isn't filled with vitrol or anger/frustration...gun rights just doesn't get it up for me. shrug.

In my mind, the 2nd amendment is there to protect the citizens from the inability to stand up to its government. Which means the citizens should have access to just about any weapon made since the government's soldiers certainly do. Do you think semi automatic assault weapons in the hands of private citizens are really going to stand up to the armored vehicles the soldiers have access to? It actually is a good argument that the citizens should have access to something that can take out an M1, that can go through soldier's armor, that has a chance to take down a helicopter.

Back in the day, a muzzle loader could take out the most advanced form of soldier wearing the most advance form of armor. This is no longer true. So the 2nd amendment in my eyes, on what it is meant to be should actually allow the private citizens access to MUCH more.
Interesting perspective.

But I counter that with the fact that even a well armed citizenry will never overcome a well armed, well trained, and well experienced military force.

I just don't see that happening nor do I see this type of scenario ever becoming reality.

Take the "Ownership Rights" out of the equation because no one is violating your Right to own A GUN. What is really happening here (imho) is an attempt to draw the line at which guns should be legal for individual/personal use. I think there is a legit argument to be made here. Are assault weapons (As built and intended) appropriate for personal individual use? Was not the intent of the assault weapon for military and/or police use? ie used by "trained professionals?"

Tell that to the Mujahideen of 1980s Afghanistan. Keep in mind that they were fighting a force willing to commit far more atrocities than our military would likely commit against its own citizens. Also keep in mind likely desertion rates.

The reason that gun nuts are so obsessed with "assault rifles", is because a semi-automatic rifle with detachable magazine has been at the heart of every fighting force in every post WW2 conflict. Most citizens don't want full auto rifles, or grenades, or nuclear bombs, because quite frankly, they don't need them, even in a full scale revolution scenario.

What they do need is a large detachable magazine, which is why the "assault weapons" ban is so annoying.

Also, even if you believe a nationwide revolution will never need to occur, read up on the Battle of Athens:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Athens_(1946)

Also put yourselves in the shoes of a Los Angeles store owner in the 1992 riots after the LAPD refused to enter certain areas.

Good luck Spidey! They are out of stock everywhere on uppers lowers and ammo too. Used to be you'd go to wideners or ammoman, two of the largest internet dealers, and they would have hundreds of thousands of rounds available not much left if you're picky and nothing if you want NATO pressures.

At least someone's doing very well in this economy.:)

The answer can be found by posing the following question:

I suppose I'm right there in between demo and repub.

I shoot him in the leg, then call 911.

isn't that what most sane people would do in this country.. anymore?

You would shoot a guy charging at you with a knife in the leg?

Jesus these bleeding hearts need to be stopped.

How about this scenario, actually based on true events in a thread at DU.

Are you screwed w/o a gun?

You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and a toddler in stroller.

Suddenly, a dog, Rotweiller grabs hold of your baby and starts shaking her about.

Call 911? You don't have 5 minutes

Beat the dog? They feel nothing in attack mode

I think you have a catastrophe on your hands, Democrat, a Republican, or a Redneck.:(
