I think handguns are fine. Hunting rifles... okay. But what's the need for a semi/automatic rifle?

My 30 06 Remington Deer Rifle is semi/automatic.
I need it to kill Deer and Moose.
Do you understand what a semi auto is?

Why do I need armor piercing bullets? Because when someone's busting through my door wearing a vest, I don't want them coming inside.

Don't invade my house, and you won't need a bullet proof vest.

What's the problem?

Chuck

Vests are $300 on eBay, or free stolen. When it comes to my safety over someone invading my home, I'll take my safety, Thanks.

Chuck

Are you really that scared that someone will come storming into your home?

I guess I just don't get it. I don't live my life in fear of these things.

Next time you're up in the Chicago area, let me know. I'll take you out at night to the lovely towns of Harvey, Robbins, Englewood, South Chicago Heights, etc. and you can hang out there for a while, kickin' it with the locals. You don't have to worry though right? I mean, if anything bad happens, the police will be right there when it happens to protect you. Heck, they'll be there before it happens. So no worries!

The point is no one needs to be restricting my purchasing decisions. No one. Unless it's something so insane, like a RPG, surface to air missle, etc., they can butt the F out. This is akin to telling gays they can't sleep together because the Gov. doesn't want them to. Who's F'ing business is it of the Gov. to directly interfere in our lives like that?

Chuck

P.S. For your little night out on the town, please make sure your medical coverage is all up to date. Thanks.

Do you live there?

What does the fact that rough areas of town exist have to do with your personal safety?

Grow a pair already.

In my mind, the 2nd amendment is there to protect the citizens from the inability to stand up to its government. Which means the citizens should have access to just about any weapon made since the government's soldiers certainly do. Do you think semi automatic assault weapons in the hands of private citizens are really going to stand up to the armored vehicles the soldiers have access to? It actually is a good argument that the citizens should have access to something that can take out an M1, that can go through soldier's armor, that has a chance to take down a helicopter.

Back in the day, a muzzle loader could take out the most advanced form of soldier wearing the most advance form of armor. This is no longer true. So the 2nd amendment in my eyes, on what it is meant to be should actually allow the private citizens access to MUCH more.

because as we've learned over the past several years, a small force of well-armed individuals can't possibly hurt the US army.

oh wait....

Interesting perspective.

But I counter that with the fact that even a well armed citizenry will never overcome a well armed, well trained, and well experienced military force.

I just don't see that happening nor do I see this type of scenario ever becoming reality.

Take the "Ownership Rights" out of the equation because no one is violating your Right to own A GUN. What is really happening here (imho) is an attempt to draw the line at which guns should be legal for individual/personal use. I think there is a legit argument to be made here. Are assault weapons (As built and intended) appropriate for personal individual use? Was not the intent of the assault weapon for military and/or police use? ie used by "trained professionals?"

i bet you have no idea what an assault weapon is.

The problem with allowing assault rifles is that it would flood the market with them allowing criminals easier access to them than if it was cost prohibitive like having to buy imported illegal Assault Rifles from some criminal org..

scary black guns are already expensive. that's why common criminals don't use them, even though they're legal.

What is it with people and guns in this country? Yes, I know, it's a right.

I'm with you. I don't get it. It's like you're defending a body part. I just don't get the fanatacism revolving around guns.

Change the assault to the 1st amendment and tell us your opinion on that. It is only speech right? Well guns are a primary defense against the tyranny of govt and defense against criminals. Without the gun you can toss out the rest of your rights.

The 1st Amendment has already been curtailed. It's not absolute as a very strong government interest coupled with a narrow means to achieve it can override an individual right under the Constitution.

Example: Screaming "FIRE!" in a crowded movie theater or Copyrights.

The founding fathers knew what an out of control government can do; hence, the second amendment. Don't believe me...

Originally said by: Thomas Jefferson
The beauty of the second amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it.

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.

Please. This argument is such a joke, we are talking about trying to solve a problem practically here. The government already owns you it doesn't matter whether or not you have an assault rifle. They have swat teams, they have the FBI, they have the national guard, the army, and they have nuclear weapons. This argument is dependent upon such a radical concept of what our government today should look like that it isn't even worth discussing.

Oh right - because all of those have done such a wonderful job defeating civil insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan.

So has the second with various laws. So lets weaken them further?? Is that you logic?

Not if you steal them.

I guess I'm confused here, I thought Assault rifles were the same as what is used in War Zones like the M16, the Uzi and the afore mentioned Street Sweeper not some 22 caliber dressed up to look like it's straight from a Hollywood Production of Rambo.

That's the whole problem. That's what YOU and many people think of an assault rifle.

By a HUGE margin the "assault rifles" targeted are just normal semi-automatic (as almost all guns are) rifles that happen to look scary. There is nothing special about them other than the look.

Classic example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-15

And for even more fun the bullet of an AR-15 is about the same size as a .22.

Seems like you are the one who needs to "grow a pair". You probably think guns are "icky" and are scared of people owning them.

Why are you afraid some nut is going to randomly shoot you?

Guns aren't going away, the 2nd amendment isn't going away, the rest of our rights are not evaporating.

Have you been awake for the last 20 years?

Cling to God and guns much?

Besides, Obama is surrounded by the best political team in history. They know the public reaction before we do.

He'll only lose the few NRA members who didn't vote McCain last November.

A couple of news videos I saw showed the captured drug cartel weapons. There were grenades, full auto machine guns, etc. You know, the same stuff you can get here at Walmart.

Yeah. They'll sell it as "this is how we're protecting you!"

Leaving out any facts about the weapons in question.

Just a word of advice; don't pin your hopes on straw man issues.

You already tried that 4 months ago. Has the bitter taste of defeat been forgotten already?
