Though I do not agree with the reasoning of most, I think it's a horrible idea to not have children when you are intelligent, well off, and married.

A chain of information over 3 billion years old dies with you, and one with your wife.

This is a case of rational thought overriding the most basic instinct of life beyond food/water/shelter. Many times this is a good thing, like when someone calls you a dirty SOB and you decide not to murder him, or when you are flying a plane and the engine fails, you stay calm and follow the dive while trying to restart the engine rather than panic and pull up causing an uncontrollable tailspin. But in your case...

It's purely irresponsible!

No, having and raising children you don't want is irresponsible. If you don't want your kids you will only resent them and they'll grow up f'd up in the head b/c they'll know they weren't wanted. Only people who want to raise kids should have them.

NO! Nothing of the sort. It's more like murdering everyone that has ever come before you.

Fear is not required when choosing not to have children. He isn't being irresponsible. He's just doing what he believes will make him the happiest. It is no one's responsibility to have children. That goes against the idea of what freedom means to this country.

Yes, it is, if this is the state mind you are FIXED in. However, this state of mind IS ABSOLUTELY A PSYCHOSIS!

Please provide me a rational line of thought that would justify ending your evolutional existence. I can't wait.

You really are making a mountain out of a mole hill. What the hell do you really think is going to happen if this guy chooses not to have kids that is so terrible and irresponsible? Honestly man, you really need to learn how to choose your battles more wisely.

To me personally nothing. This is a moral argument. I will also neither benefit or lose anything from convincing someone not to commit suicide, but I will tell them not to all the same. This is a form of suicide, whether you see it that way or not. It is also a form of murder, which I was not the first or only person in this thread to point out.

At the dinner table last night my little guy (almost 2) kept saying 'all done' when he was finished with his food, and I was pretending to not hear him and kept saying 'what?' over and over, and he would laugh each time. Then he got quiet, so I asked him if he was all done so I could get him washed up and he looked right at me and said 'what?' then proceeded to laugh his ass off.

I didn't want kids at first either, but stuff like that sure makes me glad I did.

I'm starting to think you're the ideal poster child for a childless relationship.

Good for you. I didn't want kids either...but my wife had other ideas...so we ended up with two.

Tell them all to mind their own fucking business. Explain that you think children are filthy little animals that should be kept in cages and only let out on tightly-controlled leashes...lTHAT should end the inane questioning...:D

And most of it is available in siblings, relatives and people from the same region as you.

Its not like he has telekinetic powers or immunity to cancer. He's just another dude, scratching his balls and taking up space like the rest of us.

I understand that, but someday our sun is going to swell to a red giant, and then most likely shrink to a white dwarf, thus erasing all those lines of code permanently. If that's not enough, our section of the galaxy may not survive the collision with Andromeda.

Holy shit dude.....no amount of rational thinking will be able to convince you that your justifications are completely out in left field. You are nuts.

You're not helping your party guy image.

Millions of people die prior to reproducing. Nature will continue on whether or not I reproduce. Whatever effect the loss my miniscule contribution to the gene pool would have had is far less important to me than my decisions about how I want to live my life. I am the product of evolution so I evolved the ability to decide not to further my gene line.
/hypo argument

I plan on having kids but to try to force or encourage people who don't want to have kids to have them because of some sort of claimed genetic imperative is to deny that we've evolved to the point where we are able to make such determinations for ourselves. There's enough humans running around screwing that nature has accounted for those that either choose not to or through circumstances never come to reproduce. Redundancy at work.

Ya, but that will never happen. There is no reason to try and work towards preventing it or making someone feel guilty about it.

With global overpopulation and peak oil I might have chosen different 8 and 6 yrs ago to have kids.
But I have them now and I really enjoy being a parent, but I worry for the future world they are going to live in. Every geneeration had an expectation of thing improving for their progeny.
I'm not sure of that anymore
