I wonder why they didnt use the opportunity to say "The fastest and most advanced single graphic card in the world coming soon".

If I had the fastest card out there, I`d market it like that.
Since they only mention "most advanced" its almost like they mean with HBM but slower than Titan X. Not that it would shock me.

I don`t the difference between 390X and Titan X will be that big if it end up like that.
10-15% perhaps.

There are rumors that GTX 980Ti is not a full GM200 after all, but a GM200 GPU with 2816 cores instead of Titan`s 3072 cores.
So a R9 390X should match that GTX 980Ti I think, with prices very similar.

It did. It beat it at 4K, it beat it at CF vs SLI. This was at launch.
Then after Maxwell's launch, we've seen Kepler performance drop off and its been a win for Hawaii vs GK110 even at 1440p. You must have not noticed many recent games that show R290X 10% behind 980 and faster than 780ti.

That's 438mm2 vs 551mm2.

Now we're expecting a big AMD GPU ~550mm2 can't match or beat GM200 at 600mm2? Unrealistic, as it would be going backwards.

Ok, that's a pretty compelling discussion point. Perhaps it's just that the yields are so poor that they can't make enough of the high profit ones yet? I know that every situation is different, but it just screams "DANGER" when one camp or the other falls this far behind.

On a happier note, I was pleased to go back and read up on how well my 7970 has aged. Well, sort of pleased. More like ticked off b/c that means I don't have an excuse to upgrade this cycle..

I wouldn't say either nvidia or AMD is behind. AMD does seem to have the more robust architecture though. 7970 still relevant. Also, amd releases aren't really behind. This is their release year, nvidia will be next year most likely but nobody will say nvidia is behind for taking the year like they did with 970/980

The 295x2 is the fastest card in the world, not Titan X.

If I was ever the guy in charge I would not use the term fastest. Wouldn't want a frivolous lawsuit. Even if it's HBM, it's technically clocked slower. Even if it wins 99% of the benchmark and games via landslide, it just has to lose one.

The exception is if they win the performance crown outright, in which case they will gain some sales from people who want the fastest single-GPU card regardless of price. But if the R9 390X only matches the cut-down GM200 card and costs just as much, then Nvidia will sell three to five of their GM200 cards for every Fiji card that AMD sells.

You're giving them far too much credit for subtlety. They can't even write a grammatically correct phrase, and you're parsing the details of what, exactly, "most advanced" means.

Still has two 8 pin connectors, so no massive power reductions. 😛

I'm pretty sure that the clear picture shown below the PowerColor slide is from a R9 295 X2. It matches the photos I can find of the released card. Even the R9 290X doesn't need dual 8-pin connectors (they get by with an 8-pin and a 6-pin) so I doubt this is accurate.

But there are R9-290X cards with dual 8 pin power connectors.

It was almost a year that nVidia had no card to compete in every level below the 480/70. Then when the 460 launched, they took back over.

AMD needs to convince people their cards are better. And not just the people on these forums. People in general.

People in general blame AMD for poor performance in NV sponsored games. You can see it when you read the Steam forums for Project Cars.

But the trend has definitely reversed. There's a ton of discussions regarding GameWorks anti-competitive tactics now, coming from journalists as well as Reddit (where an NV rep actually had to join in to try and defend their actions, saying "its our IP, we ain't gonna share it") & other forums. There's a TON of pissed off 780/Titan/780Ti owners on gaming forums after the terrible performance in Project GameWorks & Witcher 3.

Nvidia is much more aggressive in their branding. Given the choice between two equal cards the majority will buy Nvidia.

You are reading the post in such a way as to look for a reason to get upset in my opinion. Reread the post with a presumption of good will and see if you can take away something less negative from it.

EDIT: Additionally, the statements that gamers buy into Nvidia marketing and Nvidia has a better brand are synonymous . It is exactly what branding is about.

It ALL matters actually. Doing well currently is no guarantee to always grow the business, taking the above approach is short sighted and has killed many companies.
