I'm interested to see how long it will take BD to overtake SD-DVD as the new standard in video. Weren't HD-DVD and BD sales combined only 1% of all DVD sales this past year? It seems like it could take awhile for BD to gain control of the entire DVD market.
I think DVD was a much bigger improvement over VHS than HD-DVD/BD was over DVD, so maybe it will take longer for SD-DVD to be replaced. Maybe BD will end up being a niche technology, and will never become fully adopted by the general public.
The migration to HD content will happen as the market migrates to HD displays.
Also, the studios and hardware companies still make BANK on DVD media and hardware. They are not looking to kill their golden goose. But with DVD media/player ASPs hitting record lows, they need a new premium format to take over the higher ASPs.
As HDTVs become more mainstream, Blu-Ray prices will drop. It's the natural progression of all consumer electronics. Expensive in the early-adopter stage, cheaper when it hits mass market.
I remember when plasma HDTVs were all $3000+. Now you can get a stunning Panasonic 42" plasma for under $1000. People are gobbling up HDTVs at a record pace, and high definition movies are a major area of growth for the industry over the next 5 years.
