I shop there. They have a large account with the shipping company I work for and that account added 5 fulltime union wage jobs here.

Absolutely NOT. And don't start the union talk, Wal-Mart is a notorious anti-union behemoth.

Me, I'll gladly go right across the street to K-Mart or Target even if the same item costs a little more.

Actually, it's a shame that companies are taking advantage of the fact that there's a buck to be made by getting rid of American jobs and giving all the work to China. As a result, people in this country are getting poorer and China's able to build its military.

America is going down the crapper. While we have no loyalty to our own country and don't mind if money leaves our economy, the people in those other countries have loyalty to their homeland and don't want to see it go to waste. Look at the trade ratio- it's so one sided. We buy their crap but they won't buy ours.

Needs a pole. Yep, I shop there. No, I don't shop at the mall. Yes, I save my money.

You probably also have no loyalty to this country. For all you care, it can go under and you'll just move to China.

So everybody that shops at Wal-Mart.. or everyone that is money conscious, for that matter.. is a non-loyalist that should just move to China? :p

C'mon. It has nothing to do with "loyalty".

If China can make a better product cheaper, that isn't their fault.

However, they probably can't make a better product cheaper. It will balance out.. Some people won't be interested in the POS.

Your ideals are oldschool. They don't work in a global economy.

Besides, Wal-Mart sells many, many name brands for cheaper than the competition. What do you have to say about that?

I really don't give a flying fsck about who is selling it. If it's cheaper and I need it, I will buy it from them.

Of course, you always weigh other things. Since Wal-Mart is mostly a B&M presence, I personally don't worry about things like customer service issues. Besides, Wal-Mart has a very fair return policy.

It's all about balance, and the economy as a whole is largely self balancing.

If people are unsatisfied with the Chinese product, they will stop buying it. However, if they are satisfied with it.. the US manufacturers of like products will take notice and find ways to lower prices OR innovate to draw consumers.

If they do not, they will go out of business.

And so the world turns. IMO, it is silly to be blindly loyal to anybody.

I don't care if it's made in China, France, the US or the Moon. It's all about who has the better bang for the buck.

I hate Wal-mart. I only go when I absolutely have to. Here are my reasons why:

1) No ethics - such as opening up their stores in areas where they aren't wanted and forcing smaller businesses to close up shop - all to add another million to the pile.
2) They treat their employees like garbage
3) Massive lines, with 4 checkouts open and 20 more sitting unused. Would it kill them to staff a few more registers?
4) Censorship of DVDs, video games, and music. I want to decide what I buy, I don't want WM deciding for me, thanks.
5) A majority of the customers are rude trash. I'd rather not shop in a place where dirty little brats are allowed to run amuck throughout the store, with "parents" who obviously don't care that their little angels are annoying other shoppers and knocking crap off of shelves.
6) The few times I've gone there, they never seem to have the things I'm looking for.
7) The parking lots are horrible. Guess what happens when you get a bunch of rude trash who drive junkers all together in one parking lot? I can probably count the number of door dings on my car to get an accurate representation of the times I've gone to WM.

I go to Target for everything I can. I don't mind paying a bit more for stuff to avoid Wal-Mart and their customers. I do miss having a Meijer's around, though.

Have fun spending your money with your "higher class", it sounds to me like you have plenty of it too.

Last time I was in there, a kid (maybe 6ish) was walking around with a slice of greasy pizza and horsing around with (I assume) his brother. Parents were down the aisle looking at stuff. I was trying to find some cleaning solution for my razor and ignore the brats. Well, guess what. THe other kid tripped the kid with the pizza, and it got all over my fvcking pants. :| AND THE PARENTS DIDN'T CARE AT ALL. No apology, NOTHING. They looked at me, then at their brats (then one who dropped his pizza was crying), then..."come on, we gotta git to Gramma's. I'll gitcha summure food." And they left. Just like that. I was absolutely speechless. That's not the only Wal-Mart tale I have, but it's by far the best example of what I'm talking about.

Things like that seem to happen at Wal-mart, where I've never seen it at other stores. I have nothing against poor people, if that's what you're implying. But it seems to me (just from personal observations) that Wal-Mart in general seems to attract customers that have very little respect for others. And if you tell me that you haven't noticed this, you're either a huge liar, very inobservant, or refuse to acknowledge it.

You can call me an elitist if you want, but I'd rather go somewhere where things like that aren't the norm. Sorry.

In a global economy, you're either a slave or a slaveowner. Think about it. It's essentially an ownership economy. It makes the middle class go away. The two types that are needed are business owners and dirt cheap labor. The corporation rules in a global economy.

It also favors work going to poor countries, since their standard of living, exchange rate, and laws will be very favorable to do business with. The middle class in the "rich" country is out of work and the poor country gets exploited. It'll get money at the expense of working conditions and environmental abuse. In the end, you have a seperating of the classes, and you have the rich getting richer, and the poor getting poorer as a result of the cutthroat competition the rich subjected them to. It's all about cost and efficiency, and workers are temporary and disposable.

I completely agree. But what are we going to do about it?

Isn't it a side effect of the economic model we chose?

As long as business ethics laws are as lax as they are, the businesses will go straight for the money by any means necessary. If that means putting people out of work and taking advantage of some poor country's environmental laws, so be it.

Globalisation is all about economic efficiency, an ownership society, and cutthroat competition for the workers.

No. One opened up here recently, and over the course of about eight to ten visits they never had the items I was looking for. I don't even bother going there now.

I buy hardware and appliances from Wal-Mart and take advantage of their 90-days return policy. once I am borred of what i got / don't have any more use for it I go back right and return it, but I never buy from them anything I am going to keep, why? because for some reason I don't trust them, everytime I enter the store I just get this feeling that Wal-Mart is governed by Aliens from the planet Zoga, I just don't feel comfortable there, it's to ghetto, sometimes they go for much lower prices than anyone in the area making it hard for me to say no, but I say no anyway. because I harte ALIENS from planet Zoga. ;)
