Is this normal?

Check your power settings, it is usually set up to do that to save the battery.

Does anyone know if the optical drive can be removed and a second battery used in it's place?

As we all know by now, these VPR Matrix computers are a version of the Samsung P10. I was able to find a nice version of the P10 user manual at the Samsung Hong Kong site
Manual

The manual includes features that do not exist on the VPR models. Primary of these missing items are no floppy drive (so what, if you really need an internal floppy you can find one on the web) and no infrared (no more ir sync of PDA). Nor do these computers have audio line in.

The user manual has detailed instructions on such things as adding additional memory that aren't included in the manual I d/loaded from vprmatrix.com.

Hope this info is useful to you.

can someone please tell me the type of pc card slots these things have? check your device mangler in XP...

I have a docking station that uses a pc card and only works with certain types of card slots. Works fine now with my HP scored from staples but im considering upgrading for faster cpu/firewire/15" display but dont want to lose the dockability!!

EDIT its a TI cardbus controller

We should make a VPR Matrix laptop group so we can all keep in touch and help each other out with tips and tricks since the VPR community is pretty small...

I am facing this problem right now. It seems every now and then, there will be a sec of hard drive access. You can hear the sound "almost click like" and sometimes the HDD LED lit up. I bother me the most is when I am playing a game. It will froze the game while it is doing that, which only last about a sec. I am hoping it is not the "click of death" of the hard drive. Ran SMARTDefender from IBM/Hitachi support site (Can't run IBM Fitness Test without Floppy...). I ran the Extended SMART test, it didn't find any error. I called Bestbuy, they can't ship me a replacement HDD. And they want me to take it in Bestbuy to have it ship to them... I don't now what the hack am I suppose to do now.

The $100 in store rebate unfortunately says

"Excludes prior purchases, clearance items, demos and open box merchandise"

Mine is every one of those :(

I think I might still go for it.. I'll probably just try to talk them down on the extended warrenty when
I go in to get it

None of that is true as it's a clearance item and on the price tag it shows the rebate... open box and demos are cool too as verified by in-store managers and 800# CSRs... I'd try it, hell, it'll cost ya a postage stamp and 10 cent photocopy to find out :)

Oh, well, "no box" is different from "open box". :) No box = no UPC = no rebate

everybody that is asking for a copy of the upc for rebate purposes....

YOU CAN NOT USE A COPY OF THE UPC! it HAS to be the actual cut out upc off the box in order to get the rebate. geez, stop asking already

Uhhhh, actually, on the rebate form (the in-store one anyway) it asks for a copy of the UPC.

yes, it is normal. the compaq's do that for battery saving purposes since the lcd is the biggest source of the battery drain.

press the "fn" (function key) and "arrow up" key a few times, you should get your maximum brightness back.

where can i get the $100 rebate form?

1. download the driver
2. run SP23326.exe
3. after it unzip the files click cancel when Ati Driver starts to install.
4. uninstall the Ati Driver you have and reboot
5. once reboot, it will find new hardware.
6. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)"
7. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install."
8. Click "Have Disk"
9. Click "Browse..."
10. Select file C:\compaq\sp23326\Driver\2KXP_INF\CX_07151.inf (This is for XP!!! Win2k use C2_07151.inf)
11. Select "MOBILITY RADEON 7500" then Next and then you should be fine.

After that install ATi control panel which is in c:\compaq\sp23326\CPanel\Setup.exe

To add more adjustments for your Radeon 7500 install Rage3D Tweaker ~~Link~

This is the latest WHQL driver and my 3Dmark 2001SE score is 4054. Which is not bad.

Also don't pay $250 for the warranty. It should be $199 for laptop under $1000

Do you have a 180B5? I got 3803 3D marks with my 170B4...

Can't you just install the newest Catalyst and Control Panel from www.ati.com?
