Wow, I had a lot of trouble getting a good deal on one of these. Not that everyone in SoCal is sold out, but just getting a manager to take a decent markdown off of one. I found several Display models at different stores, but the managers were unwilling to take any more money off the price, even if the accessories were missing. The worst situation I ran into was at the Pasadena, CA Best Buy store.
I was in there Wednesday night and was quoted the price of $749.99 on their 180 display model. It was missing everything (including battery) except for the a/c adapter. Unfortunately I was waiting on my tax return so couldn't pick it up at that price. Well, I finally received my return, so went in Saturday morning to get it. One of the department heads now claims he *never* said he would sell it for $749.99, even though the other associate that was helping me did remember. SO I was basically being called a liar. He took it to one of the managers (Damon), who said they would "gladly" let me take if off of their hands for $899.99. All of the liar stuff aside, I asked why only $50 off the clearance price? He said "you're getting $100.00 off!" Huh? Well, Damon is kindly taking 10% off the current "retail" price. I said "isn't the price $948.99 now?" He said yes, but they take the open box price off of the current retail price (speaking of liars...Damon, why don't you read the text on the Open Box label so proudly displayed on 1/3 of your merchandise? You know, the part about "lowest price within the last 30 days?") On their system it does show $999.99, but right below that is shows the $948.99 price. I assume the $999 price is the website price, but Damon was not interested in hearing my story at all. It was like talking to a brick wall (except that would have been more interesting). I eventually gave up with Damon and went to another manager (white haired guy...very very nice person) and told my story. He agreed with everything I said, but he wouldn't override another managers decision. I respect that and felt a little better about the whole situation, but being manipulated and being indirectly called a liar has definately caused BB Pasadena to lose a customer. So if anyone wants to have a "nice" time, try and go buy that 180 from Pasadena. heh heh
I ended up getting the same 180 model from the West Covina,CA store (typing on it now). I got it for $809.99. The salesguy (nicest guy I've ever dealt with) was telling me "Oh, you'll get a great deal on this since it's missing all of the accessories except the a/c adapter. I bet you'll get it for around $700 or so." Well he came back from talking with a manager with a frown on his face. He said the manager would only go down to $809.99, the current clearance price minus the price of the battery ($139.99 as indicated online). UGH! After all of the hassle I went through at Pasadena and Culver City, I decided to get it. It's in great condition except for a scuff mark on the top from the display array (rhyme?) and one of the rubber feet is missing (doh!). My experience at West Covina was so pleasant though, I didn't mind paying the price. ATTN to all sales guys reading this forum: You really do catch more flies with honey!
At any rate, I'm wondering if a memo or something went out to store managers about open box prices of clearance items or moreover, on these VPR Matrix clearance ones. I used to get *great* deals on this type of thing (especially at the Pasadena store). Now all of my bargaining skills gets me squat! Maybe I'm just getting rusty!
Just out of curiousity, can someone scan their UPC only for a 180 and PM me? You won't have to scan the serial number portion or anything..just the UPC code from the box.
Thanks for listening to my venting!
