Voodoo5 6000 just sold on ebay for $1525

Atleast this gentleman has something to show for his $1500.
He sure does- a unusable video card. I've got my V2 SLI in a box on a shelf in my basement too, and this is about what he has to show for his $1500. Antique computer hardware with no functional value.

As far as your rude "drug addiction" comment goes, I make George Bush look like a hippie.

Rollo, what would you be saying to someone who was gonna buy an original Model T Ford at an auction?

".. that thing has NO historical significance to it"

"... car industry? i don't get the symbolism"

".. memories fade fast.. it's been a LONG time... it's not worth more now"

"... todays best cars have MUCH more value to me than a barely usable relic like the model T. What woudl you do with it? "

Get the point?

Get the point?
No, because it's not a good point.
Cars are pretty much acknowledged as collectables, and have been for decades. I don't dispute that cars, guns, wines, stamps, etc. have collectable value. I think the bottom will drop out of the V5 6K market like it did for Beanie Babies, beer cans, Cabbage Patch dolls etc.. I think it's collectability will be a brief timespan because less and less people give a rats ass about 3dfx anymore. Get the point?

Sorry, you still have to get one.

OK, does this make sense to you then?
Follow that link and look at the bids.
You've got FIVE people on the PLANET that thought this was worth more than $500, and only a dozen or so that bid at all.

Now look at:Check out the $610. they sold one for 4 days earlier
I guess the value on that one didn't just keep going up, huh?

You're looking at a totally dwindling market of a handful of people who think these are worth crossing the street to pick up free. If four of the people who bid on this don't next time, it's value just dropped 66%. How many people do you think knew this was out there? Everytime one of these goes up for sale I see excited posts on boards like this clamoring how the greatest card ever is available. The counter had 5365 and FIVE of them thought this was worth over $500..

Unless you it's worth $1500 to you to look at this PCB and tell your friends you own it, I wouldn't want $1500 of my money tied up in something that might be worth nothing tomorrow and has no functional worth at all.

Or are you expecting a big "3dfx revival" where everyone will want useless video cards because they're so beautiful to look at?

The one that went for $600 had a ton more people viewing it than the one that just sold for $1500. Who knows exactly, maybe no one thought they'd be selling off another one so quickly. But the $600 one wasn't verified to work, and wasn't a final revision model. That makes all the difference.

There are several prototype revisions of the 6000 card, and i'm not saying they're ALL worth $1500 or whatever price. But the one that just sold for $1500 was definitely worth whatever price it could fetch cause it was a final revision model (3700) AND it was verified working. Those are the ones to fight over. Out of ~50 total existing cards, only a small handful are final working models. Hell yea i'd pay for it! (within one's own personal reason of course).

OK, so it was "working". Working at what? Playing old games slow on old motherboards? What is that worth?

1525.00 wasted on a silicon paperweight. Just imagine what you could do with that kind of money for a new entire rig.
1525.00 so the person can stare at it on a shelf and say, "This absolutely does nothing for me, what was I thinking?".
Dumbass.

Go ahead and use that money to build a new rig. Get the best mobo, vid card, HD, cpu, memory, whatever. Within a year, everything is replaced with new product cycles and it's downhill from there. You'll never get back your original money paid, guaranteed. End of story. Meanwhile, even tho that 3dfx 6000 is just sittin on a shelf, it's STILL worth what it was paid for and more. Like I said, it's a collectible investment...

So check out how much of a looser I am to have the 5500 in both flavors. You fear my dumbassness. I would definetly get the 6000 if I had the money. Mount it on my wall on a piece of wood. "Caught, 2003, Ebay"

Meanwhile, even tho that 3dfx 6000 is just sittin on a shelf, it's STILL worth what it was paid for and more. Like I said, it's a collectible investment...
To you and four other people. To the rest of the world it's a paper weight.
I differ with you on the best stuff being worthless in a year too. If you bought the best stuff last Christmas (P4 3GHz/9700Pro) you had a kick ass gaming system for the last year, and you've STILL got a kickass gaming system for well into next. (if not all of it)
Using a kick ass gaming system is worth a lot more to me than looking at an obsolete video card, staring off into spacing and wistfully saying,"Squeel. Oh what might have been if 3dfx hadn't gone bankrupt for this poor, costly technology".

Like I said, the value on these things isn't set in stone. There's only a couple people in the world who think they're worth anything at all, and maybe they'll wake up or go to school. Then you have a pcb, no different from any other, worth less than most. If there were 1000 of the 3000 people who looked bidding, I might buy that the market for these things is stable. There were FIVE that bid over $500, so the winning bidder better hope they don't lose their jobs or wise up if he bought it as an investment.

New ad:
"V5-6000- so worthless, it's kind of ridiculous." (with a picture of one on top of Beanie Babies and Cabbage Patch Dolls)

Hehe, it's their money, let them choose it's value.

in 40 years from now it may just be that First Addition Superman Comic everyone's looking for.

We all know that computers are not a fab that will die off in another 10 years they will only become bigger and bigger until even a worthless video card like the Voodoo 6000 is worth something

It could be in a museum ... give it 70 years heck this thing could be worth millions even priceless.

Not all Computer hardware will be worth something due to super mass production but rar item's may.

I think buying an old Painting is a waste of money but some people would pay millions for it

Your personal view doesn?t always reflect everyone else's

There are hundreds of billions of people on this planet and it only takes a handful of people to be interested and you have 100 million people willing to buy this worthless card.

Whoa, i'm stunned Videoclone, that was actually incredibly insightful. I agree.

For some reason I feel like piling on to this worthless thread. But I haven't decided whether to rip the guy who paid this price or the guy who thinks it was foolish.

Genuine collector's items first go through a stage where nobody thinks it is anything but junk. While that is going on, practically every one of the items disappears. In the old days the item may have been remade into something else marginally useful, and all but destroyed, because people could not afford to throw things away. In more recent times, the item goes in the garbage. 20 years beyond that, people start thinking how great those old things really were, and look everywhere to find one. Since they are so rare, the price is high.

The desirablity of the 6000 card depends completely on the status of the common 3Dfx cards. There are people who have a genuine affection for 3Dfx, so that's a start. The common 3Dfx cards are very easy to find. 20 years after the last nostalgic hold-outs of the common 3Dfx cards have given up and tossed them out of their junk boxes, there will be a revival. People will pay 10 times what they cost when they were new. 6000 cards will surely go for many times more than that. Will the people have who have them today preserve them, or toss them sometime along the way? The more who toss them, the more they will be worth. The more they cost today, the less likely they are to be thrown away. Will your grandchildren preserve that old 6000 that grandpa kept in a special place, or will they set it out for the garbage men to pick up not knowing what it is?

Voodoo5 6000 cards are not collector's items yet. The are something people expect to become collector's items.

That's my pile of BS 🙂

Somewhat agree, generally speaking. What makes something a Collectible is determined by whether people are Collecting the item. The Value of the Collectible is determined by what Collectors are willing to pay for it. Whether the Value increases or decreases will also depend on what Value Collectors assign it. Some Items take time to be Collectibles, but other Items don't. If Rollo or others can't accept that, that's their problem.

Oh, I don't have any problem with things becoming collectables instantly, I have a problem with video cards becomign collectables instantly. I have a problem with something five people in the world think is worth more than $500 increasing in value.

Princess Diana Beanie Bears were instantly collectable, $200-$300. each. Now look:
Got Six Bucks? Buy it now.

IMHO, when there's only 4 other people in the world that think your video card is worth more than 1/3 of what you paid, it's not a sellers market.

On the contrary, it has shown demand, and sold for an absurdly high price. Therefore it is a sellers market, but the word you're looking for (and will probably never think of) is 'niche'. 😉

I'm aware of what a niche market is, one of my degrees is a BS-Business.
The words I'd use for that card's market are "unstable" (note the one sold for $610 four days earlier), and "infinitesimal" (note the people you can count on one hand in the world who think these are worth anything).

The reason why one card sold for $600 and one for $1500 has already been explained. Why even bring it up anymore? And why do you narrow-mindidly insist that eveeryone in the entire world looked at that those particualar auctions for a video card?

You're right Rimshaker. If a couple of guys want to throw their money away on on these POSs, I should be LOL at their folly, not pointing it out.

As a matter of fact, I think people should buy all 3dfx junk at insane prices.

Those of you heartbroken at the passing of the V5 6K, I'll sell you the original 3dfx bad boy that started it all - the Voodoo2 SLI!

$100 brings this bad boy to your door! Think of the fun you will have looking at it! Imagine how cool they would look on your wall! You could explain to visitors what SLI is!

Just because only 5 people

1) saw the auction
2) have enough money to bid

does not mean that there are only 5 people in the world interested in the card of think that it is worth that much. I for one did not see the auction till it was over, and wouldn't have had enough money to bid on it, yet think it would have been worthwhile to purchase.

I think the people that are really interested in buying this are simply dissappointed 3dfx fanboys from back in the day. Some poeple still can't get over the fact that they are gone.......:brokenheart:
