The prices for those things are a joke. Why anyone would want to pay that much for unusable computer hardware is waaaaaay beyond me.
They have no artistic appeal- look the same as any other video card.
They habe no functional use- by todays standards every aspect of their performance is pathetic.
Yet you get goofs shelling out over a thousand every time one goes up for sale just because there weren't many made.
Big deal.

why do you always have a problem with old computer parts?
i have friends who collect even the first Intel Processors..
or another buddy who has the whole range of pentium pro

whats wrong with having 3dfx cards in the shelves?

I mean.. I'm just the opposite of you rollo,
im obsessed with what you think its rediculous lol

I guess there's no more harm in that than the beer cans I used to have on the shelf when I was a kid. I suppose collecting trash isn't without precedent.

Bah, the V5 6k may be rare, but it's not as rare as the motherboard that 3dfx was working on. Yeah, that's right. Just like nVidia, they were working on an integrated motherboard design and actually had three (I think) prototypes made. One was actually working and featured in an issue of MaximumPC a while back. Now that's a REAL 3dfx collector's piece.

you got links to info about this thing? i would love to read about it

Now that MB would be interesting ... but probably NOT worth $1525.
OMFG! Squeeeelllllll! 3fdx! If the 6K is worth fifteen HUNDRED, the mobo is worth fifteen THOUSAND! It's at least as useless, twice as rare, and just dripping 3dfx nostalgia!

No, because it's not a good point.
Cars are pretty much acknowledged as collectables, and have been for decades.

Um, that's because cars have been around for 7-8 decades. Who's to say the value of this won't appreciate with time?

Value is in the eyes of the beholder. Just because it's not worth it to you, doesn't mean it's not valued by somebody else. I certainly don't value classic cars, but people out there certainly do. Are you so ignorant that you think the world evolves around what you think?

OK, the article was older than I thought and I got some of the details mixed up. 3dfx didn't develop a Northbridge, but they did try developing a BX based motherboard with a V3 IGP with (get this) a Vortex2 base audio component. The code name was called Brazos. Had to dig WAY back from an old copy of MaxPC (June '02) to get this.

Anyway, I scanned the one page of the article that makes reference to this. I apologize for the poor quality image, but my UMAX 2100U absolutely sucks and I'm about to trash it.

3dfx Brazos motherboard

UPDATE: OK, I re-scanned it using a different scanner and it came out much nicer this time. You should be able to read the text with no problems.

3 in existence and Aureal sound = kaching!!!

Oh yeah, i remember that Brazos article from a while back. That mobo is definitely worth a little more than the 6000 video card.. although a working vid card is a little 'sexier' to own. Not only was it not released.... it didin't even make press release news. I'm sure Rollo would paying something for this one 😉

WoW!!! It is a slot-1 Pentium III motherboard! That is the same type of system I run at home. I could run my Tualatin @ 1.46 GHz and have awesome Voodoo 3 graphics. I could throw away my 9800NP! I want one!!! I want one!!! I want one!!! I want one!!! I want one!!! I want one!!!

Just kidding.

(It is an interesting read though. Thanks for the link.)

thanks for this info 😉

Something that people like TRollo need to know is:

1) If you could afford to bid on a $1000+ item, you will GREATLY benefit from the tax write-off of the charitable donation of said amount. So you wind up spending only a couple hundred bucks for a nifty slice of rare PC history.

2) This item is not purchased to be USED, it is a COLLECTOR'S ITEM. Would you buy a million dollar stamp just to mail it? Come on.... quit squealing about it being "useless junk" compared to a Radeon Anything... who cares HOW fast it is by today's standards? It's not going to be used much anyways!

Try to understand that some things have great intangible value... and some people have far too much loot. 😛

I have an 8088 processor for sale. Anyone interested? Only $1525.00 shipped!!! Imagine how much return you will get on this bad boy six generations from now!! Act quickly because nobody else seems interested in it whatsoever. Will throw in a Tandy TRS-80 with a screamingly loud Dot matrix printer for only $29,000.00 (oops sorry, that the governments price) make that $1525.00 for an item you can do absolutely nothing with!! Hurry, Hurry!!!..

I felt the need. Yes, I agree, people can do whatever they like with their money. But that doesn't mean we can't laugh at them if we want to.

Somethings BlueMax needs to understand:
1. I could afford that video card if I wanted that video card. It's not worth $10 cash to me to have a POS video card that I can only look at.
2. Very few people in the world consider this a "valuable collectors item". I'm with Keys, just because a few people are dumb enough to consider this collectable, doesn't mean I shouldn't laugh at them.

This is true. But you can't get into a rich person's mind and understand why he collects "valuable" items. My guess would be that it has to do with competition between the rich.(the one tries to impress the others). But they can afford it, no matter how stupid or "sick" this is. I don't want to tell my opinion about ordinary ppl who involve in such a procedure. 😛

Rollo, first and foremost.. merry xmas. Now, i'm assuming from your icon that you're probly a really old guy. That in itself is a conflict of interest here cause most old folks have a hard time regarding what they have, or anyone else's stuff, a collectible. It's also a long-term investment, which like most really old folks again, have a hard time seeing one when they come across it. Bottom line is.. just cause you won't live long enuff to see such a video card really appreciate in price one day... is no reason to hate it or anyone younger who wants it.
