To be fair to him, he didn't think that the sheep were killed directly. It was something about them getting packed into semis and dying while on the way to large corporate sheep shearing centers. Sadly, most of the people who share his views have never actually been on a farm. It's almost always the city kids who get all uptight about these things.

so now a bean is more natural than a cow?

Cows are animals domesticated by humans and bred for food . . . they wouldn't survice on their own in the "wild". (they way most of them are raised is highly UNnatural - antibiotics and growth hormones and feed lots . . . )

Eating a lot of beans won't give you heart disease. ;)

I've been eating less and less meat recently, and I don't really like beef anymore. I happen to have a strong conscience, so I do feel bad about eating food that is so wasteful of resources when there are people starving.

But less people would be starving if they didn't reject genetically engineered food.

And domesticated varieties of soy beans, with fertilizer and pesticides sprayed on isnt exactly natural, either. Prior to mankind's selective breeding of soybeans, they were small and not at all high in nutritional value.

Besides, you have to define "natural", anyways... short of braining a deer to death with a rock and then eating it raw, there isnt much "natural" food by your definition.

The only nutrient you don't get from a vegan diet is B12.

To all of you who say "the bloodier the better" and "still mooing, even better" should figure out what is really going on. Have you ever seen a slaughterhouse? I know some of you here have. You don't know what the animals eat, the conditions they are in, etc etc. Just STFU and live in your little dream world.

I am not a vegitarian, but I was a vegan for about 4 months straight. I learned quite a bit about health and nutrition. I now only eat freshwater farmraised fish or wild-caught fish. What you must understand is that I am not opposed to those who hunt. Not only is it more ethical but the meat is better for you. This country has a rate of meat consumption far above what it should be. This is fact, but the american people have assumed it is their right to have a steak or burger whenever they want. This has driven the meat industry to do whatever it can to increase profit. This leads to worse conditions for the animals, they grow very ill, the meat is of lesser quality, and the only thing positive for the consumer is the price. That is all most consumers care about anyway.

"How dare they raise the price of beef! Blasphemy!"

There is a reason our country has the some of the highest rates of heart disease in the world.

"The leading cause of death in the United States, heart disease, hits harder here than in other countries. The U.S. mortality rate from heart disease was 382 per 100,000 per year for men and 214 for women, compared with 339 and 206 in the other 32 developed countries."

TMK, Japan has the highest life expectancy out of the major developed countries. There is a reason for that; their diet.

Edit: That wasn't all directed at you NTB, only the B12 part.

Also, not trying to force my opinion on anyone, well, cause most of that is fact unless I can be proved wrong.

It's a healthy lifestyle . . . there are millions of vegetarians worldwide; it does take a little extra care in choosing food combinations (and B-12 should probably taken as a suppliment) but protein is overrated anyway.

It's a choice.

EDIT: its a LOT healthier than the average american fast-food diet. :p Most of you are walking dietary disasters. :D

You can get protein from eating beans or fish (some vegetarians eat fish)

That is something I never understood. Why do they eat fish? Is it any less-living then a cow or a chicken? Seems a little hypocritical if they are the moral type of vegetarians.

Yes, I have seen a slaughterhouse when I was visiting cousins, I was taken to one (his job). I've field dressed several deer/boar/rabbits/*lots of animals, you get the point*. I still like my steak rare. I think the bigger problem than eating too much meat is "eating too much sh!t food and then not getting any exercise". Looking at your stats, 8 more women per year per 100K people doesnt seem like much. The gap is admittedly higher for men, but still I think that lack of exercise is more of a factor.

Well they obviously incorrectly call themselves vegetarians. They are truly Pescetarians. Of course it isn't less living, but some come conclusion that if faced with the decision, they wouldn't have a problem killing a fish. Not to mention, one animal is much large, and obviously it's brain is much smaller.

Nor eggs :p

(those "vegetarians" are called "Lacto/ovo vegetarians"; not "true vegans"; however they doN'T have to worry about B-12 supplementation) ;)

I didnt see my visit as substantially worse than I did field dressing a deer. Same idea, much larger scale. If you want fresh meat, something has to die. Much like in a house, if you want it vermin free, at some point you may have to kill some mice or a few roaches. On occasion a particular animal is not put down correctly and suffers unnecessarily, but they do die faster than any of the several deer I have had to help track down, because some dumb mother****er got buck fever and gut shot it or otherwise made a bad shot.

EDIT: I didnt say no effect, I just think that eating a diet high is red meat and getting exercise is healthier than eating a diet without red meat and thinking a strenuous upper body workout is lifting the phone reciever to answer 3 calls in 15 minutes.

And, despite what they might think, it isn't entirely healthy, either - there are some nutrients that you just can't get by strictly eating veggies, aren't there? My girlfriend knows a girl who is a vegetarian she's apparently a bit anemic, and she's told me herself that it's because of how she eats. I might be way off here, though.

NO VEGETARIANS EAT FISH. :p

(any doubts? - look up "vegetable" in a dictionary - it does NOT include fish)

it doesnt include dairy products either :p
wannabe technical? . . .

Or eggs :p

(those "vegertarians" are called "Lacto/ovo vegetarians"; not "true vegans") ;)

i know, but you said vegetarians not vegans. i was just kidding anyway :p
So was I . . . now most of us know more that we wanted to about this subject.
