Vegan Parents Guilty Of Starving Son

I'd imagine a hungry baby would cry quite a bit signifying to the parents that something isn't quite right. Worry free parents are a no no.

crying becomes a learned behavior. If you don't get a response from it, you stop wasting energy doing it.

Really sad because they're going to prison for life and maybe they deserve it, but it doesn't seem what they did was out of malice. This is a case where a good public flogging is in order, then let them go.

Agreed. It doesn't seem like they deliberately wanted to kill their child. They just sound really god damned stupid.

Breast milk is the best milk.

Yep.

BTW, on this note, I thought I'd add here that my sister is a strict vegan, and she is huge advocate of breastfeeding (to the point of almost being militant about it).

So seriously, the parents' vegan lifestyle portrayed here is just smokescreen by the defense and a tagline for the media. I'm a proud carnivore myself, so I'm not usually one to defend veganism, but really it had nothing to do with what happened here.

It may seem like their being vegan is unrelated but I have found that there is a disturbing number of vegans who are somewhat insane in recent years. I don't know if it's because they are vegans or if they are vegans because they are crazy or what, but when I read the local coop newsletter here, there are some real nutballs. Like people who complain that cheese should be at the opposite end of the store so cheese vapors from 10 feet away in wrapped plastic containers don't contaminate olives in the oliver bar and thereby ruin their vegan diet and force hormones and animal by products into their digestive system. I'm not really exaggerating on that one either.

A "normal" vegan would do enough research to assure that they and their baby are adequately nourished. Unfortunately there's that nutter subsect of the vegan population that is just totally bat**** crazy who are paranoid about cheese vapors or germs at the doctor and think if they just eat lentil beans and nothing else, they will live to be 1000 years old and get to visit a crab nebula in a space bubble.

Uhh... the child weighed 3.5 lbs at 6 weeks. "Dirty hippies" has no more to do with this than does veganism. If they couldn't tell that something was drastically wrong...

There's always nutballs in any group. Mostly because nutballs need and seek groups to belong to because they have weak minds and have to apply themselves to some form of extremism in order to find self-meaning.

Most vegans are in it for the healthy lifestyle aspect. The same reason normal healthy fitness people watch their own diets and are in the gym several times a week. It's not fear of death that drives them, but the desire to be healthy and make the most out of life.

Didn't you get the memo? It is easier to throw around labels and use those to diagnose the problem than it is to realize the truth.

Why wouldn't they breast-feed the baby if they're vegan? The kid could've gotten all the nutrition he needed :|

No freakin doubt dude. Maybe life in prison is too harsh, maybe it isn't - I would need to know all the facts and be on the jury. What I do know is that these two should be severely punished.

Its too bad corporal punishment and the like is not allowed. Beating the couple might be good enough to me - just break a few limbs and make them writhe in pain for 6 weeks like they did with their son

Why does the article make it sound as if his parents being vegan had anything to do with them starving their baby.

Retarded article.

yeah, agreed

Ummm because soy milk isn't good for a growing baby, get a clue. It definetely has a lot to do with them being vegan simply because had she been breast feeding it - it would of survived. But they're probably so freaking retarded and deluded that somehow they equated a mothers milk as animal product. Why else do vegans look down on milk in general?

At six weeks old he weighed just 3 1/2 pounds and was so emaciated, doctors could count his bones through his skin.

There is something seriously, seriously wrong with these people. I'm pretty sure even someone with a moderate mental handicap could look at a baby that skinny and know something was wrong. I mean, I'm talking about someone stupider than Forrest Gump here.

3 1/2 pounds? wtf

If someone wants to be a vegan, go for it. But they clearly screwed up if they starved their son.

Even a vegan diet shouldn't malnourish a child like that.

I doubt they were "trying" to kill their son, but they were obviously negligent and caused the kids death (unlike the father's argument).

I would have dissented on that jury because I'd be all for negligent homocide, but not malice....and those kinds of differences do count. It would have caused a hung jury and the DA could have re-tried under a different, more appropriate charge...IMO.

EDIT: Actually, my eyes must have skipped the line about bones under skin. Perhaps malice is appropriate because even someone simply negligent should have caught that.

Um no. Read the thread. Normal vegans are big proponents of breastfeeding. They view it as healthy and natural. Plus, a second article posted here says that the mother did breastfeed and speculates that that wasn't enough because they also fed the baby apple juice and soy milk. It is a fact that not all women are capable of producing enough milk for their babies, and that might have been the case here as well, particularly if the mother's diet was also poor (which it probably was).
Long story short: this baby didn't die because the parents were vegans, but because -- when it must have been clearly obvious that something was wrong with the child -- the parents didn't take the baby to the hospital which was right across the fsckin' street.

Life in prison? Seems harsh to me. They obviously have mental issues.

P.S. What does being vegan have to do with a 6 week old baby anyway? It's not as if you'd normally be feeding them a side of beef at that age.

I don't know that most vegans are in it for health vs animal rights. I have no way to know that, but I agree that most vegans are mentally stable individuals who lead very health lifestyles. However, I think it's disturbing how many nutso vegans there are compared to any other arbitrary grouping of people. It's a disturbing trend that harms the image of vegans and disrupts the ability for them to be taken seriously when the "healthy" vegans make legitimate requests at restaurants, grocery stores, etc.

Vegans don't generally ingest any sort of dairy. Babies normally drink milk. Milk is dairy.

I believe soy milk cartons warn about using soy milk as substitute for baby milk.

EDIT:

NM, it's stated in the article heh
