Hehe, I created characters on both beta servers. My halfling bard on Server 1 has her appearence change every time I log on. Annoying after I spent a good 30 minutes creating her.

Well, I got an explanation for why the servers are so unstable. Seems they are in house servers at Sigil. They are not the live servers that will be used for the live version. Thats a plus. Now if I could actually play for more than 20 minutes at a time.

I still thinks it funny that my lithe, sexy, halfling bard turns into a 300lb jumbo with fugly hair when I log in.

Hah nice!
Thanks for the info on the servers, I logged on the other day and it seemed a little better than normal but good to know they are still playing in the sandbox and have yet to migrate to a more ideal solution.

Edit - Almost makes me nostalgic for my EQ2 monk

I had a monk too in EQ2,as to Vanguard I did manage to play earlier today with a new ranger alt, started in a new area so that was cool, never had any crashes, apart from when you exit to windows while the game is running, always best to exit Vanguard first.

Game was still laggy, hope it's better on final release.I like the graphics and choice of alts, there was about 3500 logged on while I was playing.

I finally got this all downloaded, updated, installed and my account created (phew). Now I am stuck on character creation.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I am currently playing an Elf Hunter in LOTRO Beta, which is ok, but I was thinking I would like something a little more magic oriented this time around. So hard to decide though; I created three different guys and deleted them all because I was not sure :(

Blood mage seems popular for magic users,I have a monk and ranger on vanguard, just try a few different ones, remember it's beta, so now's the best time to experiment with different classes.

Btw it's worth having a few different classes since you start in different areas,so new scenery to explore etc....

Hmm, interesting, thanks very much. I am totally new to this type of game so I am not really sure how all of these things work. I certainly did not know about the last part.

I'll have to spend some time sorting through all of that tonight.

I am not tring to thread crap but is it not legal / right to discuss anything about the game while it is in it's beta stages... are not all the beta players suppose to follow the NDA by not posting the patch notes? This is just a question... not a bash.

This game does nothing for me... does not capture me at all..

played a couple hours now in between server crashes...

you can keep the graphics... dont like them even on super high..

rather look at WoW than Vanguard..

game seems rather unpolished for such a late beta test..
feels more like an Alpha or a closed beta1

archery is halfassed done.. gotta be almost on top of the mob before you can shoot making it worthless.

char animations are stiff and look like they mapped a complete novice swinging a sword.

quests are way way worse than WoWs already..

fonts are horrible over peoples heads and monsters.. chat system is lame..

wont be wasting any time on this game..
I was a HUGE EQ1 player loved it..
Liked EQ2 but not as much..
tried this for about 4 hours and Im done with the game..
its bad..

You are probably right, I guess I will move over to the Vanguard forums to discuss :(

We are in Beta 5, this is the final phase before release. The NDA is lifted, however, the client and game is not available for open download at this time.

I did a few quests and they worked ok,you give feedback on each quest like on difficulty, content etc...however I'll be surprised if they go live end of the month, remember the game is still beta.

IMHO - Welcome to the World of Vanguardcraft. I logged in, and I felt like I needed to be looking for some dancing nightelves almost immediately. They've done their best to copy most every aspect of WoW, including the lag and server crashes.

I was in Beta since 2.5 (last March).... It was originally Microsoft, and moved over to SOE in Beta 3 months later.

Honestly, the game was best in Beta 2.5. Since then the game has since been WoWified... If they had the gameplay of Beta 2.5, it would be a decent game.

However, they have added mini maps, corpse alters, buying back sold items to merchants, along with many other WoWifiying effects.

I can honestly tell you that every beta tester (well except 2) from Beta 2.5 who visited the boards regularly kept preaching to Sigil and Brad to not go the way of WoW, and everytime it went on deaf ears. Most were preaching (many 10 pages long) about how to make the game more difficult and challenging, because that increases immersion and staying power for the MMORPG. People can only whack monsters (with no challenge/risk) for so long before they become bored. People can find fun in corpse recovery (even if its frustrating), because it adds dimension to the gameplay and something else to do. Add in many other aspects of gameplay which have been removed because its "tedius". What is tedius to most players is whacking monster for months at a time (with nothing else to do) to get the mysterious level 50... Grinding is boring. Imagine 10 pages of suggestions and discussion about it... But what they ended up with is grinding forever until max level with nothing else to do. Atleast you can watch your skills get to max level in about 2 battles (literally you will get 3 skills up in defense running from a monster) every time you ding. Woot, thats fun!

At one point I believe Brad said "We are going WoW. If you don't like it, tuff luck, find another game." That was right around Beta 3 release. I guess Brad will soon find out how many people are going to switch to play his game... Vanguard will be done in a year or two at most.

I was playing a bit this weekend and alittle earlier tonight.

While the game runs better than I thought it would on my system, I do feel it should run better (in general). The graphics are comparable to EQ2, but they're not as immersive as WoW. I tweaked the vgclient.ini, and that raised my frame rates (http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm?thread=109367&bhcp=1). BTW, my system is a A64 3000+, 2GB PC3200 RAM, eVGA 6800GT (atleast, those are the important parts). I get 30-40 fps running around in the open, 1-20 fps in towns/crowded areas.

As far as the interface is concerned, it's kind of a mix between WoW and EQ2. I don't really have a problem with this though.

For gameplay, I think it's fun. I've played ranger and rogue, and I liked them both, but I die a lot more on the rogue, which I blame myself for. The quests so far are very much like WoW and EQ2, but I didn't expect them to be any different than the standard kill X number of Y monsters, talk to this guy, collect X number of Y item quests.
