I thought his take on the status of PC gaming, at least UT3's status, was more or less right on. He also offered a devastating critique of the console game experience, explaining how the skill curve for console FPS's is much less than for FPS on the PC.

He did have an interesting point -- UT3 could be the last hurrah for PC FPS online multiplayer gaming because in a couple years, there might not even be a PC gaming scene, at least not in the U.S. Sadly, I think he might be right--it's all going to be about console gaming. UT3 is being advertised, not as the follow-up to the wildly popular Unreal Tournament games, but rather as a game from the studio that brought you Gears of War.

Well if PC gaming keeps having years like 2007 has shaped up (or is shaping up to be) then PC gaming is not going anywhere. From a competitive gaming standpoint, things may end up going the way of the console, but the average PC gamer will still be around as long as they keep releasing decent titles.

I used to be a huge UT player - checked my stats the next day at work and everything, but I didn't realize there are more "productive" games out there (if you can call it that) at the time. UT3 is great mindless fun. But it's only as fun as the session you play and when you're bored again, you can go back to it. It doesn't make you long for it when you're away at school or work for the day. I don't know about paying $50 for games like these anymore. Yes, I pay monthly for WoW.

I tried the demo out at the local PC place, and it's really fun! Downloaded the demo, installed it, haven't had the time to go and play some yet

Just dl'ed it & it won't install. Is the .net framework required? It seems to insist on looking to C drive even though I tell it otherwise & says not enough space.

.net 2.0 framework is required somehow, as the installer will install it if you dont have it.

it also installs some ageia physX software

10-4, It also installs the Ageia stuff that an early poster said wasn't needed. Has anyone else had a prob with it not installing to the specified local?

Yeah hopefully everything will make its date next month. I really hope PC gaming doesn't go anywhere but hey if it does I'll save alot of money because I won't have to upgrade once/twice a year. Instead it would be more like every 3-5 years.

I may have found the answer in an earlier post. Gotta re-boot to try it out. I wonder if console gamming is this big of a pain in the butt. The expence & hassle factor is probably going to be the downfall of PC gaming.

That did the trick. Had to rename temp files to another drive. Gonna give it a go now.

Haven't played Unreal T in years but I guess no better time to start practicing. I likely get my butt kicked by people like n& and pontifix, but I'm a fast learner.

i'd say i'm about average at most FPS type games. There are definitely people who are way better than me. The only one I think I was maybe better than average at would be SoF2 and I haven't played it in so long, that I probably would be back down to average. Even then, I got my ass handed to me by better players. Players who are so good you'd swear they were cheating (and who knows, maybe they are?).

Well, you keep playing in the hopes of noticing that your skills are improving. Also, the game has a social aspect to it, especially if you're part of the clan scene, and if you enjoy experiencing new custom maps and discovering new communities of people--it's all out there for you.

Yeah, you will buy it on your PS3 in 2009 when it finally releases. Or haven't you heard about Epic's struggle on Xbox 360 and PS3 and their impending law suite that might set them back a lot of cash flow?

Cheating hah. Isn't that what everybody does?

I can't seem to move and shoot very accurately. I usually get frustrated and quit which defeats the purpose of practicing. But I think I grew old and wise enough to know a thing or two about humility.

UT is a Frag Fest anyway. Kill the guy in front of me, and there's about 2 or 3 others in back of me with rocket launchers.

Hate it. Time to go back to realism games.. oh wait, theres only one true realism game out there now... and its creators dont care about their loyal fans. F*ck! (Armed Assault). Sad that there isn't more out there.

Crysis will do I guess. Waiting for realistic mods though.

Max textures & quality settings aren't available in this beta.

I also personally feel it looks better w/ bloom off.

I relate totally to what he said about playing on 56k and wondering how it would be to setup somewhere and get together for a tourney. Get props from everyone and pay your own way. Buying a console yesterday and using the glitches to dominate and getting everything handed to them. That's kinda true. There's no working up from nothing and being all skill based like it was before.

I really think the console gaming scene got big because you spend as much on a console with a controller as you do just on a good video card for the PC. Before you even buy yourself a good mouse and monitor and CPU etc. It's too casual. Playing Viva Pinata one minute and the next minute I pop in Halo 3 to play against someone. The way PC gaming has always been online was competition. You couldn't be casual, it was serious business. For the most part it was civilized and people were mature. On the console networks you have every rich 13 year old kid who wants to be eminem going on there and talking about your mother. That just never happened before, people had respect for the games, the companies producing them, the people playing them, and themselves. These days it's all about what glitch you can find to get the advantage. Nobody respects the game for what it is, it always has to be to their advantage.

I'm stoked! It runs great on my system with the 7900 @ stock. I'm sure HL2 will be good too. Looks like I can put off a new VC for a while yet. UT is what got me into gaming & it & HL are my all time fav's. Hat's off to them both.

Yeah, the demo is'n't full blown textures and whatnot, but it just goes to show that modern-ish games can run well on hardware which is not the latest top end.

this is running absolutley horribly on my system, and I can't really figure out why (specs below). I'm only running it at 1280X1024 with the detail settings at 4/5 and hovering around the 40 fps mark.

Call of Duty 4 was running a hell of a lot better than this.

drivers, maybe? i have an X850XT and am probably getting similar framerates (time to start up fraps so i can give an actual number :D)

edit: i only get 25-30 very consistently. (sometimes 35ish)

i'd check get the latest drivers and see if that helps
