Anyone pinpoint why it would be crashing other than the driver?

Could be:

1. Doesn't like your overclock (if not stock)
2. Running too hot
3. Sound driver rather than graphics driver?
4. It's a beta
5. DirectX version
6. Old graphics driver not cleaned away properly

Thanks, actually funny you mention heat (im not OCed currently) my CPU is been WAYYY too hot lately, im going to re-apply thermal paste this evening, see what happens. I had it reset on me last week, but it thought it was because my room was too hot, I am begining to think its my CPU....

I'm having the same crash problem... it runs fine for a bit and then crash to desktop. I guess I'm just going to chalk it up to beta and wait for the 'real' demo before I can play it :(

Could be your memory and/or PSU.

update: Updated my CPU+mobo+RAM to newer components (see sig). It runs smoothly at medium settings now! Really awesome game once you get around to playing it smoothly. Vehicle CTF rocks!

Everything else runs fine, including other UE3 games. I think it's just something in the beta. I got some corrupted executable file message before and it made me reinstall.

The game runs surprisingly well on my machine (I was doing 1024x768 with textures at 4 and World Detail at 3), although the lack of AA is a bummer. Still, it looks amazing. The vehicles are quite fun, although I wish we had a more open vehicle map - it's pretty hard to use boost on the scorpion without hitting stuff. But now that I want to buy this, I'm thinking about the coolness that is ET: QW class-based gameplay and artillery call-ins. Maybe I'll pick it up when it's $20 or so...

And I have to buy CoD 4 too! And a new GPU/CPU/PSU! Damn, my bank account is gonna be hurting...

Server browser -- that's my biggest complaint so far. I didn't think the looks of it were so bad, but the functionality is god-awful! The server browsers in the Original UT99 and UT 2004 were far, far superior that POS. Previous UT server browsers allowed easy-entering of IP addresses, the creation of a favorites list, organized the servers properly, had filtering options, and showed the names of the players on the server. I'll be very disappointed if the UT3 browser doesn't do all of that and more.

I'll go so far to say that the server browser is the one thing that would make me NOT want to buy the game on the first day and pay the highest retail price. Either Epic will have to fix it or we'll need a custom server browser mod.

Note--I'm pretty sure that I saw a comment in Epic's forums saying that they're fully aware of the server browser issue and that it's going to be fixed.

Yep, the server browser is indeed horrible. I can't join any games that are around 22/24 or 23/24 players, but I can often get into 24/24 games. Wtf? I usually just enter 18-20/24 games to save hassle.

If you were in HeatRay, that'd would be happening when the person in the Dark Walker uses its secondary fire.

Apparently knocking nearby players onto their asses is the result :p

BTW, i'd like to address a ton of the complaints made in this thread, since believe me, there are far more than you guys have even scratched the surface of.
But there's no way i have enough time.

For what it's worth, Epic is hearing what you guys have said, plus twenty zillion other issues brought up.
They have a ton to work on.
What they decide to improve on is their decisions, but there is certainly work to be done.
Again, remember this is a beta...there will be changes (likely not as many as there should be, but there will be changes).

If you truely would like to learn a bit more about the beta demo of UT3, i can strongly suggest the following community sites for a staggering amount of information.
And i mean staggering.

http://utforums.epicgames.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20
Lots of clueless n00bs in there, so take what's babbled about with large grains of salt.
http://forums.beyondunreal.com/
Best overall source of info on UT in general for a long time now.
Main site is superb also.
http://www.prounreal.com/forums/index.php
Not likely as friendly to the general public. The guys in ProU may post a lot of retardedness, but they tend to be able to play. Really well.
http://www.unrealna.com/forums/
Newer pro-oriented UT site...again, not likely as interesting to the general public, but if you wanna hang with the pr0s...

If there's one thing i've found, it's that the community surrounding UT is huge, even if those are just a small sampling of it.
I won't even bother mentioning all the IRC channels for everything UT related...

^ honestly N7, i'm incredibly impressed with the U3 engine. although i will say GoW is getting my money first, UT3 is a top rate DM/CTF game, even though i'm a bit disappointed that it doesn't feel more like UT99. sometimes it's just fun to frag stuff without rhyme or reason, and the UT series delivers on that, undeniably. no story. no fancy suits of any kind. just killing. lots and lots of killing :D

That's probably because the server has reserved slots for Admins to join. That's not a bug afaik.

love the hoverboard. for those of you having trouble, I have a 22" with graphics 1680x1650. that rez caused it to crash. I changed it to a smaller rez and it worked, and I was able to re up the rez ingame. hope that helps someone.

I play in that resolution with no problems.

I am really impressed with the game play so far. Im finding this one addictive MP game. Ive been playing with settings maxed out running real smooth. Hopefully full version will have a few more features that can add to the game play. Oh, and the MP Server Console BLOWS. Horrible.

That's one thing I'm sure Epic will change. Love the new UT (like me) or hate it, one thing everyone agrees on is their contempt for the new UI.

Not really a subscriber. You just need a Gamespy login (taken care of in game); doesn't cost anything or commit you to ever even visting their site. Gamespy is running the master servers and stats servers, so the game requires a GS login.

There's a lot of animosity about GS handling this for Epic, but Epic seems to think that it's for the best. We'll see.

Where do you go to change the graphic quality settings? I'm running the game at 1600X1200, and it still looks pretty poor.

so do I :)

that said, the fix is for people who ARE having problems ;)

it's one more thing to try for those of us who have trouble with the game crashing on start up.

Since you're not having problems, you won't need to worry about the fix. Best to stick with what works for you.

Max textures & quality settings aren't available in this beta.

I also personally feel it looks better w/ bloom off.
Examples: http://rage3d.com/board/showpo...335183102&postcount=61
http://rage3d.com/board/showpo...335181115&postcount=48
http://rage3d.com/board/showpo...335181162&postcount=50

The bloom actually makes it harder to play too, especially in that Shangrila map. I was occasionally getting hit by stuff I never saw coming because the bloom from the sky had obscured it completely.

At the Epic forums someone posted links to an interesting interview with a Pro-UT player (Stryfe) discussing the outlook for the pro PC-gaming scene (think Fatality level) and UT3. Basically, the PC gaming scene is being massacred by consoles.

http://one.revver.com/watch/386604
http://one.revver.com/watch/386626

I thought his take on the status of PC gaming, at least UT3's status, was more or less right on. He also offered a devastating critique of the console game experience, explaining how the skill curve for console FPS's is much less than for FPS on the PC.

He did have an interesting point -- UT3 could be the last hurrah for PC FPS online multiplayer gaming because in a couple years, there might not even be a PC gaming scene, at least not in the U.S. Sadly, I think he might be right--it's all going to be about console gaming. UT3 is being advertised, not as the follow-up to the wildly popular Unreal Tournament games, but rather as a game from the studio that brought you Gears of War.

I tried to play the UT3 Demo on my machine, but it would get up to the end of the intro screens and crash back to my desktop.

I'm running the following:
Asus W3J - Intel Core Duo T2300, 2.5GB RAM, 100GB 7200RPM HDD, ATI MR X1600 with the 7.9 Mobile Catalyst Drivers
