Yeah, it's a bummer I live in IL now. But that will make the spring summer and fall that much more special. 😀

Well, I have much of the winter to think about this. I'll probably buy in Jan or so when dealers are desperate.

There is actually almost a glut of Harleys right now. It appears production has finally caught up with demand.

Plus, the GF has to take a riding course and get her MDL. We're going to pick up a used Honda Rebel for her to practice on.

Absolutely. Leathers and a helmet are a must. Helmet, jeans and a vest at the very least in the dog days of summer.

As for a helmet, full face for touring and a skull cap for cruising, I guess.

That's the bike the GF wants. She has shorter legs and can't reach the foot controls on the more laid back bikes. But she fits on a lowered Sportster just fine.

BTW, the 1200 Sportster is more like $10,xxx out the door. The 883 is in the low 8s out the door.
 
If it was me and I was in the market for a true custom bike I would go for something from someone like http://www.exilecycles.com/. I like the look of his bikes and when you factor in the cost of a stock non sportster harley and all the upgrades you want, the price of a exile bike is not too high. I like the look of his bikes and the chances are pretty low you will see one on every street corner like you can harleys.

I thought about that. And it was very tempting.

But... if I buy a stock Fat Boy now, I can slowly customize it and if I get tired of it, sell it for a very small loss.

Plus, it has a 4 year wheel to wheel warranty.

Finally, the harley has more options and is easier to quickly convert it from a cruiser to a touring bike and back again with bolt on parts.

This way if I don't like cruisers, my loss is minimal.

If I do like them, I can always get something more wild later, and fully convert the Fat Boy to a touring bike.

Yep, you can look at much of their gear online. It is highly overpriced.

Well, in defence of the Victory they are still cheaper than a Harley, so even though they don't hold their value quite as well, I think thats a fair trade off.

They are also quite simply a better bike, IMHO.

But, I will agree there isn't the pelethora of doo-dads as Harleys have, but there are still lots. Not having a dealer nearby is a bit of a strike though.

Look at a V92T. Already built for touring and you don't have to buy as much for add-ons.
 
I like the vrod better than the fatboy, looks wise. But you should get whichever you prefer.

Oh, and :thumbsup: on the girlfriend that wants to ride with you.
 
Amused, I wouldn't worry about the resale that much 🙂 Afterall, this is not going to be your primary way of transportation. Right? Weekend/Afternoon cruiser? I say get the one you like the most, and just enjoy it for many many years 🙂
