If it was me and I was in the market for a true custom bike I would go for something from someone like http://www.exilecycles.com/. I like the look of his bikes and when you factor in the cost of a stock non sportster harley and all the upgrades you want, the price of a exile bike is not too high. I like the look of his bikes and the chances are pretty low you will see one on every street corner like you can harleys.

I thought about that. And it was very tempting.

But... if I buy a stock Fat Boy now, I can slowly customize it and if I get tired of it, sell it for a very small loss.

Plus, it has a 4 year wheel to wheel warranty.

Finally, the harley has more options and is easier to quickly convert it from a cruiser to a touring bike and back again with bolt on parts.

This way if I don't like cruisers, my loss is minimal.

If I do like them, I can always get something more wild later, and fully convert the Fat Boy to a touring bike.
I would look to see if there were any issues with Solid Billet Front Wheels and the the Bikes Handling due to air flow.

I'll ask, but I haven't heard anything. Have you?

And is this in regards to me possibly making it a touring bike later down the road?
Only in regards to the VRod's handling but I would expect that to be an issue with any bike sporting Solid Billet wheels. I've never been on a Bike with those kind of wheels though so I couldn't say from personal experience. You might want to check out some Harley Forums and inquire about it.

I wouldn't, because it looks "old". I'd buy something with a newer appearance...

There's a reason they call classics CLASSICS!
Though this may not BE a classic in the real sense of the word. It IS classic in appearance.

I'd jump on it in a heart beat.

(If I had the money. 🙁 which I don't 🙁 🙁 )

I hate loud bikes so I would never want one. When I hear them go by and blow my eardrums out I think the same as when i hear a riced out car.

But when these hogs are classy and not so loud I like them.

meh,
i'd never get a harley. No way in hell i'd wanna be associated with that demographic....

my ride

I'd rather have one of THESE

Or one of these! So I can take my dog along!

now that's *classic* - much better than 300+ lb white men covered in leather/chrome outfits from the local s&m convention

i definitely wouldn't mind those... a rolling piece of history 🙂

Let's not throw around stereotypes, because the ones associated with the crotch rocket crowd aren't too flattering either. 😛

At any rate, there are more than two strikes against me getting a crotch rocket.

I'm older now, and racing around doesn't appeal to me.

I live in the Midwest flatlands. The closest thing I have to a twisty is a curved driveway. That means a crotch rocket is wasted here.

My GF hates them and would have nothing to do with me, motorcycles, or riding if I got a sport bike. If I buy a cruiser, she will get one too and ride with me.

So that leaves a cruiser. I've looked at, and seriously considered Japanese cruisers. But the first thought that comes to most peoples minds is "poser." And the resale values are horrible. So why not buy the original AND be able to sell it for nearly what I paid for it years later?

That doesn't seem to stop people from buying them here. Every year I see more.😕

Yeah, and all I keep thinking is, "where the hell do they go to have fun with those?"

From all I've seen, they treat them like drag racing bikes. No fun in that for me.

Yea, mostly stoplight to stoplight at 90mph.

Pfft Poser! Posers ride Harley's too. They are called RUBs, short for "Rich Urban Bikers. They all have the Harley Clothes on, Do Rags, fresh tattoos and ride their bikes every weekend to the local coffee shop and sit outside drinking Latte while admiring their scoots.

Some of those Metric Cruisers are nice and you can get a used one for a fraction of the cost of a Harley, new or used. On top of that Bikes like the V Star and Road Star have a lot of off the market add ons if you want to customize them. If I lived back in Merced CA or somewhere that wasn't as congested as Boston and had good weather most of the year round I probably would get one of them while I saved money to get a Harley.
