UPDATE:

OK, Thanks to Red Dawn, the GF is now in love with another model. I like it too, but my dream bike has always been a Fat Boy.

Anyhow, which color do you guys like?

I plan to customize it to look somewhat similar to this:

Pros:

  • The resale values on these are outrageous. They hold their value like nothing else. 4 year old moderate mileage Fat Boys are selling for within $1000 of new bikes.
  • The new EFI engines are silky smooth and reliable
  • Image, image, image.
  • Customizable like no other bike.
  • I'm old, and can't hunch over a crotch rocket anymore... plus, I don't much feel like racing everywhere anymore.
  • My GF tells me because of all these pros, it's the only bike I can have... IF I buy her a custom Sportster so she can ride with me
Negs:
  • Over priced.
  • Not a tech-heavy bike
  • Image can be negative
  • Loud.
What are your thoughts for a 37 year old guy?

Welcome to your early mid-life crisis?

😛

Actually, after a life of riding nothing but dirt bikes and crotch rockets, I would call this an acceptance of old age.

I wouldn't, because it looks "old". I'd buy something with a newer appearance...

Like what? I want a cruiser, not a racer.

Remember the resale value on this when you choose.

Harley or something! Don't put too much credence in resale, because afterall the best resale is not buying it in the first place 🙂

So which model Harley do you like better?

Yeah, I know it's cheaper to just not buy. But how often to you get a GF say she wants to get her own bike and ride with you???

I don't know a damn thing about bikes, I just know that i think I prefer harleys to that one. They look a little rougher and less "old", or maybe the fat boy is called classical in appearance...? Doesn't the one in your pic look a bit uncomfortable for long distances? You'd want something with a back rest and all that?

Skoorb, that is a Harley. 😛

A back rest and windshield can be added easily for long trips. The seats change in minutes.

Does a back rest really make a difference for the driver? I know passengers can benefit, but I can't say I've ever seen a harley owner using a backrest...

sure why not. Buy it. i like the red better than the blue.

And then you should go buy a crotch rocket and realize how much better they are than Harleys. 😛

I <3 my ninja

seriously, buy it. If you dont like it - sell it and lose only a little bit of money.

I've owned a few crotch rockets in my time. I really enjoyed them, too. But now I am favoring a laid back Blvd cruiser. One that can be easily and quickly converted to a touring bike for longer trips.

If you see a Fat Boy up close, it's an awsome sight. They are so low, wide and massive and just laid back and mean. Especially when lowered with a custom paint job.

If you get it I bet your time spent here will be greatly reduced..well at least when it is warm and dry enough to go riding.

As a person whose first plan once he gets a permanent-hire job (temping right now, no shortage of work for a competant person but not gonna do anything big until I'm more stable) is to get financed for a Sportster 1200 Roadster I'm going to have to say that you should buy it.

The thing is, even though Harleys aren't cheap by any stretch of the imagination, they just don't lose value. The MSRP for a brand new Sportster is in the $6,000 range. The price for 5-10 year old Sportster 1200's is in the $5,500 range for examples in good condition. They really don't depreciate much at all.
