Israel belongs to the Israeli's and they can make their own decisions within their sovereign borders. And I feel ya about the doctor's office. Though my point was that my doctor's girth doesn't in itself make me getting more exercise a bad idea. It still stands on it's own merits, however much I might want to roll my eyes at him.

And the whole point of the argument is the question of what Israel's sovereign borders _are_, so saying they can make their own decisions within them doesn't much advance the argument (not to mention that whether other countries recognise a capital is also a question of foreign policy).
I don't think recognising Jerusalem is a helpful thing to do. It's a statement of the US taking sides in a complicated and agonising dispute.
