Error! Does not correlate, right to defend != right to own guns.

Saying you have the right to defend yourself but not the right to own guns is like saying you have the right to free speech but not the right to criticize the government.

I'm not going to argue with you about US politics, I don't give a shit what Obama did recently, you know what I mean when I say right to life.
I know what you mean, but you apparently do not. You are talking about rights as a legal construct. I am demonstrating that rights as legal constructs are meaningless under any standard of scrutiny worth having. If you believe that rights are bestowed by governments, then it is only fair to look at the actions of said governments to see what those "rights" really are.

More like the right to breath but not the right to adequate concentrations of oxygen.

Don't you own a gun?

Edit: http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=31672089&postcount=15 You do!

Quick... someone call Scotland Yard!

I do!

No it isn't, the right to criticise the government is a necessary part of free speech.
Owning a gun is not a necessary part of defending yourself.

Fair enough.

I'm pretty content with the difference between:

Applying for a shot gun license
Having a police background check
Receiving a license
Having the police come round the house to check how the weapon is to be stored, Checking who owns a key
Having a disassembled shotgun with no ammunition stored in a secure box that has been checked by the police
Police re-check every year or so

vs

Old woman has a pistol in a box.

Do the police check to see if your computer has any illegal mp3's or software on it while they are there?

Since a gun isn't necessary to defend yourself...

How do you recommend a woman living by herself defend against an intruder/rapist, should she feel that is a legitimate threat?

didn't you see his previous response? If she's british, it's obvious she's a ninja and a master of hand-to-hand combat

I don't presume to recommend the best method of defending yourself. It's not for me to say, I know little about it.

Which is why we banned guns for everyone, not just some, it's rare that someone gets shot over here now, and so it is rare that I would need a gun.

Did you ban kitchen knives? Baseball bats? Fire axes? Chainsaws? Swords? I don't know about you but if someone was trying to kill me with a sword I'd need a gun to defend myself against them.

And your government still has guns. A lot of them. Why aren't they disarmed also? Since no one needs guns :hmm:

Dude... There is a thread in OT where this argument raged with HAL for hundreds of posts... Let's not relive it.

In a nutshell... If she can physically fight off her attacker, good for her. If she can't, she just has to lay back and enjoy it. That's things work in HAL's world. But of course, HE is allowed to have a gun.

Ermm, No, No, No, and Some.

Other countries still have them. As do some criminals, the police don't carry guns, except special units that get called when someone has a gun etc.
