Thank you for confirming a popular theory that modern SJW's are merely trying to recreate the greatness of liberals past who fought for genuine injustices.

When so such injustices exist, make them up! The fact that people look at you funny when you holler about the travesties of "microaggressions" is all the proof you need that it's a real problem to fight for!

[cheer] Righteousness!!

One day they'll all stop making you a victim.

Been there, done that. Think I might still have the t-shirt.

“Education is being redefined at the demand of the uneducated to suit the ideas of the uneducated. The student now goes to college to proclaim rather than to learn. The lessons of the past are ignored and obliterated in a contemporary antagonism known as ‘The Generation Gap.’ A spirit of national masochism prevails, encouraged by an effete core of impudent snobs who characterize themselves as intellectuals.”

My gawd this "argument" is worthless and pathetic. *sigh*

Keep screaming, snowflake.

What exactly is your argument anyway? All that ever comes drooling out of your mouth is repetitive mexican muslim or sjw cuck this and that, and how lowest common denominator tough guy wannabes are the real brain trust. There's just so much comedy in people at the bottom of their class mouthing off about leftist libtard schools.

What is wrong with toughness? When you face adversity, is your first inclination to work through it or sculpt play doh.

As for my second point, I was demonstrating how OrByte contradicted himself

Premise #1: Stupid people chose not to vote.
Premise #2: Stupid people who did vote voted for Republicans/Trump.

Your conclusion: if more people voted, Democrats would have won.
But your premises suggest Trump would receive the greater share of votes if more people voted.

In other words, your logic has flaws. I suggest you take a few more college courses. You might just learn something.
my logic has flaws?

I'd be happy with more people being engaged and active in voting IN GENERAL. Voting D or R is besides the point.

BUT, If I wanted to extend this logically, if Trump won the EC and the popular vote I wouldn't have as a big a problem with the 2016 election as I do.

This whole demand list is stupid. The stupidest part is the people that give in to the demands.

Hey kid, there's a difference between the stoicism that most pretend to and putting on a macho face cus can't look weak/effeminate to them other rednecks.

College student already vote at relatively high rates, eg: https://gvpt.umd.edu/sites/gvpt.umd... SSQ Voter Turnout Among College Students.pdf, it's their peers who don't vote.

Yes the "I don't want to push 1 for English" crowd filled the Trump rallies, but Trump got elected because a lot of otherwise normal people didn't punish him for smashing the Overton Window like many in the media and many on the left assumed they would.

This lack of penalty for Trump not playing by the rules of modern society is directly related to an anti-PC backlash and the fact that Obama's election basically ended the 50 year tradition of middle class white guilt. These students are like the gay people in Massachusetts who wanted to get married but instead got W re-elected, hence why they keep getting national coverage.

I would generally agree but don't think it has much to do with obama. There's always been a stubbornly optimistic assumption that politics should represent the best of us, eg. who we want to be seen to future generations. While that may be true for some, Trump just showed that it's not for enough people in the right places to win an election. Their behavior on this forum, which is hardly the worst of it, makes that rather evident.

I encourage you to read through the demands made. This shouldn't be what we want from our higher ed. Long gone are the days unfortunately that college equated to critical thinking, studying, and improving oneself. Backlash to exactly this type of behavior and thinking is what got Trump elected (that coupled with an absolutely horrid opponent). I'd love to meet on middle ground, not have Trump as president, but also not face the degradation of society by a bunch of spoiled children.

There are certainly some real problems they wish to address.

And there is certainly a difference between making demands and making requests, or going through establish processes to get votes or funding for such requests, or creating organizations and seeking support from the community to make such programs happen.

To be fair, though, I don't know the efforts that may have been taken in that regard prior to this set of demands.

Has anyone actually read the list explanations included with each item?
Do any of you understand the origins of protectUMD and how this list was compiled?
Did any of you people actually go to college and do anything other than "cram for exams related to your major"?

http://www.dbknews.com/2016/12/01/protests-college-demands-diversity-umd/

The list contains a lot of silly crap, a lot of unrealistic but understandable request.
A list that can be expected from a bunch of kids in a university environment.

From an educational standpoint, the contents of the list is not important. whats important is tasking students putting some thought into issues that impact them and coming up with solutions on their own.

This is some special project that was done in November.
Learn how to identify issues important to you.
Learn how to express yourself in a clear professional manner
Learn how to organize and communicate with others

Do something other than wasting time on social media or the internet (like anandtech) complaining about shit and come up with solutions.

I can understand that this upsets some.
Especially the old farts who basically lost the ability to think for themselves and rely on their preferred news channel to tell them what to think and how to express it.
I can understand the "I'm an engineer" brigade who tend to get think they know better than everyone on every goddamn topic that floats in front of em and get locked in their mindset. People who don't understand the point of non STEM curriculum or curriculum not directly related a career that makes at least 6 figures.

To look at this from another angle,
These students are consumers of a service. This list is a request for modifications to services provided by the university. The university responded by saying "Thank you for your list. We will now review it so that we can come up with responses that both educate the students on how to respond appropriately to crap like this. Also smoothly shoot down the demands that are ridiculous.

disclaimer: Screw proofreading and grammar corrections.

Do you have any ideas, or projects, etc. of a different character than the things that get bashed here to look into? I think we see the same problem, but honestly I'm not doing much better than everyone else here.

Pretty sure the bulk of insufferable old farts aren't even engineers who crank formulas handed down, and their general lack of any humanities education or wherewithal prevented them from thinking for themselves in the first place.

Ever the optimist.

Why only SGA and greek orgs for diversity training? Why not demand that as a requirement of graduation, there are like 16 credit hours of diversity based studies?

Are you asking me if I have more interesting things to bitch about?
I kinda like bitching about people bitching about other people bitching.

Me too. But no. It was a sincere ask. Seeing a problem and acting on it are two different things. I would be gracious for anything that helps.

No demand for Asians? Of course, what else is new. Those darn Asians, why they spend so much time in the university library to better themselves? Why they have to be such sold out and acting white. (sarcastic).

Oh, I also do not see anything about Buddhism. Is it my turn to scream out loud that I am "marginalized" and "oppressed" now? LOL.

The Left really doesn't like Asians. Honestly, people who get exposed to Asian civilization and culture come back much more conservative.

But this whole thing about Muslim accommodations...it's edgy, Muslims have this veneer of danger, violence, honor, and otherness which makes them like perfect for the Left. You will never see these activists mugging for Asians because Asians typically aren't pushing back in an aggressive manner.

"(Loud speaker)
Attention students,

Participation in this special project will require creativity and clearly stating your own opinion. Also, the participation will not be graded hence not count towards GPA nor will any award or certificate be granted."

(Asian students quickly go back to looking at smartphone while disregarding message.)
Except for Sampath. Sampath recognizes opportunity for getting laid and walks up to the first cute girl that nodded her head when the announcement finished.

(Takes asshole troll hat off. Patiently awaits notice from mods)

Case in point why Muslims need some protection from this sort.
