The only people that this really sucks for are the families of the people who will still have Labor Day off while the Tyson employee won't have that day off to spend with their family (assuming that some of these families would get Labor Day off)...

Wow I can't believe people are crying about this.

Wait this is the same place where there was a thread complaining about how Independence day is now called 4th of July because we are trying to destroy our heritage.

Nmind I'm not surprised.

I wonder what would happen if a Middle Eastern company in the Saudia Arabia or wherever that had a majority of US workers allowed their employees to vote on changing the Eid al-Fitr holiday to the first Monday in September...

uh...the Tyson employees all have had Labor Day off in the past....not sure what point you are trying to make about people who don't work at Tyson that have to work on Labor Day (this thread is about Tyson employees who have to observe Labor Day on a different day, right???)...

This just in: faux-libertarian Republicans storm Congress demanding the passage of a law forbidding private employers from changing holidays.

Next up, they demand the repeal of the 1st amendment and a new constitutional amendment making the Pentecostal church the state religion of the US.

FREEDOM!

No, it's actually about (as per the thread title): Plant Drops Labor Day For Muslim Holiday

First of all, it was YOUR point that it sucked for the employees. Obviously not enough since the majority voted for the switch. I thought that was pretty obvious and logical. How exactly would you celebrate Labor Day on a different day??

I then responded that a lot of people don't get to spend time with their family members because a lot of people don't get off on Labor Day, to which you responded with some other smart ass nonsense like logic escaped you.

Now you want to talk in circles, but I'm not interested.

my sarcasm meter must be broken or something...so you are okay with other countries discouraging their companies from changing nationally observed holidays to holidays celebrated by immigrants?

Why not? Is Saudi Arabia the US or something?

What you really missed though, was Red's point that Socio's type and the people he hates are just 2 sides of the same coin.

When I worked in Paris in a law/tax division with a number of expatriated Americans, the French were quite keen that we observed French holidays (they have a number of traditional holidays we do not share).

When I worked in Germany, if the police find you working on one of their hoilidays they come shut you down.

I visited Arab/Muslim countries and you can guess how one's refusal to follow local customs is delt with.

Holidays are a shared part of culture, and many feel it is an issue of assimilation.

Restaurant remarks are silly and irrelevant.

Are you arguing that forced assimilation through police mandated holiday observance is a good thing? People don't assimilate into your culture because the cops stop by with a club and threaten them if they don't have a barbecue the same day that you do. The actions by France and Germany in this respect sound like terrible ideas to me.

I've got no problem with it, if it was what the majority wanted. I did however think that Labor Day was a federally mandated holiday.

I figured out that much on my own about Socio....but I still think it sucks for the 500 non-muslims who probably observed Labor day with the rest of the country.

What will happen when this union contract is up? Will Christmas and Easter be next on the list? heck, why don't they just replace all of the US holidays with Muslim ones?

Sorry, little Sally but daddy can't celebrate Thanksgiving/Christmas with you because he doesn't have it off anymore, but you can skip school on the next Muslim holiday we have so we can go to IHOP...

The beauty of America for me is that we are not like other countries. Particularly in this regard.

The restaurant comment is not silly and irrelevant. If a private business is not allowed to determine its own holidays due to cultural or religious reasons, then who is to say that it couldn't take the next step and be blocked from allowing particular products and services for cultural or religious reasons?

This thread is in effect one big anti-capitalist rant.

Yeah, but what about it sucking for the majority of the workers when they had to work on their holidays? It's a private business making a deal with their workers so the greatest number of them can observe the days off that they want to. I can't even believe this is an issue. They aren't even replacing some religious holidays with others, they are changing a day that Americans observe by having a barbecue with one that has serious religious significance to them. If this were anything else but some Muslim thing nobody would care.

I believe the problem comes from most Americans being Judeo-centric and believing that the country/government/private business should be as well.

These workers are working in another country that already has their established holidays. No one made them come to the US. If observing their holidays really meant that much to them, then maybe moving to another country was not such a good idea...
