Is South Korea one of the world’s worst countries for workers’ rights?
A recent report from the International Trade Union Confederation ranked Korea below most of 139 countries surveyed in terms of workers’ rights, based on submissions from local labor unions. Korea was assigned the lowest rating of 5, defined as a country that has no guarantee of rights.
“While legislation may spell out certain rights, workers have effectively no access to these rights and are therefore exposed to autocratic regimes and unfair labor practices,” is the ITUC’s general description of a category 5 country.
