Trump acts against Syria- 49 Tomahawk Missiles strike air force base.

Russian forces also use the base, but U.S. military officials said they “deconflicted” with them ahead of time to minimize the possibility of them being caught in the strikes.

After being informed by the US that "stuff is about to blow up" and exiting stage left, I wonder what the Russians, Syria's ally in "bro in cheif", told the Syrians as they drove away.

You don't think that maybe the Russians passed the warning on to the Syrian's at the base do you? It would be kinda weird that Russian staff who have worked closely with their Syrian allies for the past "forever" would just wquietly evacuate.
That would just be rude.

Just thinking out loud and stuff

I'm curious if the Russians engaged any of the tomahawks. The air defence systems they've deployed in Syria are designed to also take down cruise missiles. The S-400 is an incredibly capable system.

I'd bet the farm on "no". This is a version of the Great Game and direct military intervention of two superpowers against each other is to be avoided. We let the Russians know the strike was coming so they would not suffer losses and the attack was direct and limited to a low value target from where the gas attacks were launched.

I would expect that the Russians called Assad and said "don't effing dare to try anything, suck it up", because Russia is likely not all that much in love with Assad to begin with. He's useful, but not worth a third world war.

Almost certainly the Russians let the Syrians know and we'd be fine with that. Remember this is a message, not an attempt to kill people as a primary goal.

The US has sent message by cruise missile thousand of times in many countries for decades.
Message is always in english.
Unfortunately targets tend to only speak arabic

That's not what happened here. The message was sent to the Russians who would clearly understand us. The Russians could speak to the Syrians and passed the information on. This is not a matter of dropping leaflets.

or he could avert it and you would still be crying that your house is still standing.
If Trump had even a marginally good record, you might have a point in all this. Considering his absolutely abysmal first few months in office, forgive us if we don't have an orgasm every time Trump manages not to fuck something up completely.

Trump notified the Russians, who then probably told Assad to fly their working planes to Latakia and roll out some old junk for Americans to waste $80M in Tomahawks on.

Supposedly the missiles were all directed to basically the exact same spot too.

We'll have better info tomorrow, but that 'spot' was an airbase (though, small by American standards).

Anywho, seemed necessary - not only to shutdown Assad's use of extremely toxic substances in Syria, but also assure US/Iraqi/Kurdish troops in the area that the White House has their backs. Of course, the hawks will now go into a frenzy and demand Assad's head :astonished:

I'll take that bet. Cruise missile are cheap, if they hit a fighter, two bombers and a gas truck I'd win.

The price is irrelevant but if we want to go there we can afford the cost of the attack more than Assad especially if we hit a high value target. Again this has nothing whatsoever to do with maximal physical damage. It's a message.

The approximate cost of 50 missiles is $80M.

Close enough
We launched 57 Tomahawks@ 1.5ish mil per so just nudge that up a smidge

We obliterated some old migs, took a runway out, destroyed some pool tables and the exercise room. Several maintenance staff reported that their xbox was damaged beyond repair.

You don't seem to understand how this works, at all. The prime target would be one or both of the runways. Any other damage is incidental.

That's about what the goal was. Next time closer to home.
