You don't think that maybe the Russians passed the warning on to the Syrian's at the base do you? It would be kinda weird that Russian staff who have worked closely with their Syrian allies for the past "forever" would just wquietly evacuate.

I'd bet the farm on "no". This is a version of the Great Game and direct military intervention of two superpowers against each other is to be avoided. We let the Russians know the strike was coming so they would not suffer losses and the attack was direct and limited to a low value target from where the gas attacks were launched.

I would expect that the Russians called Assad and said "don't effing dare to try anything, suck it up", because Russia is likely not all that much in love with Assad to begin with. He's useful, but not worth a third world war.

That's not what happened here. The message was sent to the Russians who would clearly understand us. The Russians could speak to the Syrians and passed the information on. This is not a matter of dropping leaflets.

Anywho, seemed necessary - not only to shutdown Assad's use of extremely toxic substances in Syria, but also assure US/Iraqi/Kurdish troops in the area that the White House has their backs. Of course, the hawks will now go into a frenzy and demand Assad's head
