Tuesday morning near dawn,

The following is from a variety of sources.

The greatest damage to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Slidell, LA was due to the storm surge.

Since I was born and raised in Biloxi, let me give you an explanation of what happened.

The wind in Biloxi, which is a penisula running basically east-west, was from the NE as Katrina approached the MS/LA state line. This strong wind, actually the strongest direction as the hurricane approached landfall, kept the waters of the Gulf back from the shoreline. As the hurricane hit land in the Slidell area, the wind quickly switched to the east. This relieved pressure on the gulf waters and they started quickly coming ashore. The hurricane, picking up forward momentum, moved inland and the wind in Biloxi changed to the SE. This SE wind now pushed ashore additional water from the gulf. The result of this action was a very quick rise in water from the 4 - 8 foot level to 27 feet. This very fast rise in water smashed into the shoreline of Biloxi/Gulfport and on to the secondary coast lines of Ocean Springs and North Biloxi (D'Iberville) and flooded into the body of water known as Back Bay. Almost without exception, all single residences located on the beaches and those homes on the North side of Back Back near the bay entrance were completely wiped out. (pause) :brokenheart:

The status of homes on the south side of Back Bay are unknown at this time. That is where my daughter's home and mine are located.

I am still in Panama City, Florida. Daylight is now approaching. I'm pretty much stuck awaiting news. I'm afraid the "TeAm Enterprise" Setiqueue is down ... maybe for good.

Later

Glad you got out of there Greg.
We have a friend that lived on what they call "The Point" at Pass Christian. The Hwy 90 bridge and the railroad bridge are gon leading to there.

There is nothing but concrete slabs of where the houses used to be. There was an Apt complex on the water where they had a line painted where Camile got up to. The building is gone now.

I hope she is OK. I know we lost Ziggy the Cathoula dog and the cats if they did not take them.

PS - I'll check with the place in Covington to check on Tom when I get back in there. It is a 2 hr ride so it would take a while before I get back.

I may wind up staying over there at any point and would not have electric or Internet access.

Also there is no phone service, either land line or Cell phone.

Just about every telephone pole was taken down.

Good luck to you Dave. Stay out of the streets! Lawlessness abounds right now.

FYI, there's a guy manning a blog New Orleans Blog holed up at a datacenter. If it gets too bad, contact him and find your way there.

Some of his comments are scary, especially the info from the police officer they helped.

Prayers to all in New Orleans.

I'm back!

Most of my folding boxes are out due to generator only covering essential gear. I posted some stuff in OT a while ago. See that thread here.

The storm was freakin brutal. It has greatly slowed my march towards 2,000,000 pts.

Best to all!!

Sorry to check in so late but work has been very busy this week. I hope all of our TeAmmates are okay. Computers and other material possessions can be replaced. I'm far from well off or even financially stable for that matter but I'm going to go to the local Sams or Costco this weekend with a friend and pickup some of the much needed items to send to the victims of the storm.

FYI - If you're in the Tampa Bay area the St. Pete Times Forum is a dropoff area. According to the radio it's open 24/7 for donations.

I wish everyone down there the best of luck and all the strength needed to deal with what's to come (especially Smoke & family as it looks like Biloxi is almost completely wiped out :().

Smoke.....hope you found that power supply for your lappie. Been trying to follow the news in Biloxi....seems the Sunhearld is still up and posting online. Latest post I read was Here.

Dave ...You best take care down there. Civil unrest seems to be poised to rival what's happening in the middle east.

From what I've read and What I summize....Our Pesident has deep pockets filled with oil. And the Oil companies bottom line is more important than the people that has filled their bank accounts.

I could go into a "Hale Mary" about all this but I won't.

And you don't want to hear the rest of the speech :disgust:

Why don't we blame the government for Katrina while we're at it, too?

This thread isn't about politics. Direct those comments here, please.

Times like these bring out the best & worst in people.
I believe that for every video of looters taking stereos & tv's (when there isn't even any electricity) there are a hundred stories going untold of neighbor helping neighbor, people who have something sharing with someone who has nothing etc.
With the news (papers, tv, radio, internet) if it bleeds it leads. It will never change.

Keep up the good work people, if you are on this TeAm then I know you are one of the 100.

Glad to see you Ok.

My Van engine died tonight driving back to Baton Rouge, two policemen stayed with us until a tow truck came, they said it was their worst part of town.

Don't know how I'll be able to fix the van but will march forward. Ida will drive me to the Baton Rouge command center where I will fly by copter to New Orleans Ops center for a 48 hr shift. See you guys Sunday or Monday.

Stay safe Dave. As much as possible.

Greetings from the Evacuation point of Dead Orleans.

I am in that building across the street from where you see the helicopters landing and taking off and the thousands of people lined up along the Interstate.

Officials are using this as base camp as well. I have spoken to an Officer that he said he has seen at least 3 thousand bodies.

I just got a Cell Site up here so we are a beacon in an Island of Dead.

I have never been to war but I do not have to go because being here I see what it is like.

I cannot believe this has happened. It is beyond surreal.
