thinking about transfering...how's cali? **UPDATED**

cliffs notes : I'm thinking about transfering and I'm looking for a large school in california as an option. Need some advice on places to look.

Long story : I'm a second semester sophmore at a small college pretty close to home in New England right now and I'm pretty much just not getting much from it. It seems like every time I talk to someone about school I end up sounding really disapointed with where I'm at. The size gets to me a little, weekends are pretty tame around here and there's really nothing in the immediate area to do. That's not to say I don't end up drunk frequently on the weekends, it just feels like every weekend, every party is the same.

On top of that I don't really feel like I'm getting the education I had in mind when I decided to come here, which is really the primary reason to look elsewhere. Ideally I'd like to end up with a degree in computer science/information technology with a minor in business, and it's impossible for me to do that here.

I didn't really look at big schools when I was applying from high school because I convinced myself that I would get lost in the crowd...now I see the draw in going somewhere you can meet new people on a regular basis instead of feeling like you're at a slightly larger high school. I'm looking at california because I've never been there, and I think the warm weather would help me deal with day-to-day BS.

It may be that it's been a bad semester, but either way it's something I want to look into...everyone keeps saying that these are supposed to be the best years of our life and I don't feel like I'm going to look back and see it that way unless I try to make a significant change. Any suggestions on schools or just names I can take a look at to research would be much appreciated. Thanks

EDIT: looks like the San Diego area is nice...any suggestions on schools in area are welcome. Computer Science with a minor in Business is probably what I'm looking at, and preferably not at a tech or polytech...I'd rather be around non-CS majors most of the time based on my experience here.

Stay in Boston.

If you're looking for a large school, you can go to UCLA. Maybe Syringer can show you around.

why would anyone want to go to cali willingly? when I drive around america I plan on going out of my way to avoid that state.

that seems kind of contradictory...
Boston is nice...but I'm not in Boston...I'm in the friggin boonies of Rhode Island.

Southern Cali is nice...weather, food, beach, babes...
asked and answered.

Any schools other than UCLA that I should look at though, that's really what I need.

that's pretty much it in Southern Cali. UCSD is nice but does not carry near the name recognition

If you want a easier move you could go to a college in Boston 😉 Quite a few of them here 😛

u better be richer

the housing costs are similiar, but tuition for out-of-staters is much more since part of it is subsidized by instate tax payers

Did you miss the part about weather, food, beaches and babes?

I had noticed, and I love Boston...I just feel like I'm going to end up here, so I want to live a few other places before I do.

That's fine, stay away. We don't want you here anyway.

I lived in the San Diego area for 6 months and really liked the area. I almost went to UCSD.
I don't know how much it's changed since 1993, but at the time, it seemed to have all the good things (sun, beaches, babes, etc) without the bad things you find in places like L.A. (smog, traffic, etc).

btw how are your grades? it's pretty hard to transfer and you need top grades to do so also. with the budger cuts they have cut class sizes so there is limited space. talk w/ ur academic advisor first before you think about doing anything.

I've heard good things about San Diego too...why didn't you end up going to UCSD though?

Another option is USC. Since your out of state it will cost about the same anyhow.

minus1972 if warm temps year round, a lot of things to do and some of the most beautiful women you'll ever see are what you're looking for consider Central to South Florida. You'll be closer to home, cost of living isn't as much as Cali and you're never far from the beach. It's pretty comparable to Cali in my humble opinion.

Yeah, what exactly is wrong with Cali. I don't think I want to live anywhere else🙂 Great place!😀

AFAIK, transfering to a Cali school is tough. Hell, most of them are overcrowded enough that it's hard for in state students to get in at all relative to other states. I have heard it's even harder for transfers from out of state. Maybe if you have super high grades or something, but otherwise I'd say your in for a lot more pain than you need if you are just looking at some random school, maybe in Cali or something. Lots of other nice places that won't be so much of a hassle.

Of course I've just heard this second hand, maybe someone who's actually done it could tell you better than I could.
