I think your first reaction upon setting foot in Cali is "I've never seen so many foreigners before!"

I used to live in California; when I moved to Ohio, my reaction was "I've never seen so many white people in real life before!"

California is a fun place to live, but I wouldn't want to raise a family there.

I lived in the San Diego area for 6 months and really liked the area. I almost went to UCSD.
I don't know how much it's changed since 1993, but at the time, it seemed to have all the good things (sun, beaches, babes, etc) without the bad things you find in places like L.A. (smog, traffic, etc).

I've heard good things about San Diego too...why didn't you end up going to UCSD though?

Well, I moved down there and spent a semester at Mesa Community College to get my grades up a little and save some money until I could get in-state status. Ended up getting my financial aid screwed up and finding out I couldn't get qualified for in-state tuition rates so it came down to not being able to afford it. I ended up moving back to Oregon and saving a lot of money by going to the University of Oregon.

Now that I'm working for a living, my wife and I have both talked about wanting to move back to the San Diego area. But housing prices are so high that I would have to get a job making at least 100k to come close to being able to afford a decent house in SD. Right now, I'm pretty happy living in Southern Oregon and making half that and owning a 150k home here.

I really liked the UCSD campus though and was pretty impressed with the school.

I have heard it's even harder for transfers from out of state. Maybe if you have super high grades or something, but otherwise I'd say your in for a lot more pain than you need if you are just looking at some random school, maybe in Cali or something. Lots of other nice places that won't be so much of a hassle.

Of course I've just heard this second hand, maybe someone who's actually done it could tell you better than I could.
Yeah, that's the other half of this whole thing. I have no idea about how difficult it would be to get into any of these schools, just trying to consider my options right now.

Yeah, what exactly is wrong with Cali. I don't think I want to live anywhere else:) Great place!:D

I wouldn't want to live in a place that is soon to become an island or possibly the next Atlantis ;)

a) Do you have the money? You will absolutely get raped by out-of-state tuition. Not to mention living costs already.

b) How are you grades? How good of a school you looking at? UC are quite selective and thus difficult to get into, even more so that you are out of state. Furthermore, budget cuts are causing tuitions rise constantly, and have the schools accept less.

c) Might I reccomend a Cal State college like Fullerton where you won't get raped so bad monetarily, and if you so decide to can transfer into a UC after 2 years or so?

Out of state tuition is really high, so unless you can afford it, don't bother with your search. Go to some school websites to see how much you'll be paying.

Here's info for a typical UC. http://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/0304Budgets.html

http://www.ormp.ucdavis.edu/studentfees/

Consider the area the university is around also. If I could do it again, I'd go to UCSD for the beach, sun, weather, golf courses, and Mexico :)

The good thing about California is that it's never humid and if you don't like the weather, drive 2 hours to the mountains.

a) I'm already getting raped on tuition...cost looks similar if not less in some cases.

b) I'm right around a 3.0 right now with dramatic improvement this semester so I'm hoping to bring it up higher.

c) haven't checked it out...but I will; problem is I'd like to be done with school (or undergrad at least) in two years or a little more.

Good choice. I'd love to transfer to Stanford or Berkeley but it's already too late to leave

Cal Poly is nice..I've got a couple friends down there and they're loving it. Davis is also nice, but there really isn't much down there; you'll need a car.

Berkeley would be my top choice since its very easy to get around (BART aka Bay Area Rapid Transit) and you'd be able to check out sites in SF once in a while. The Bay Area is a nice place to live if you can afford coming here.

Well all sounds good and best of luck. For your information, Berkely is definitely NOT a warm weather area, if thats much of a factor to you. Davis is in the middle of nowhere, as well as Cal Poly Obispo.

UCLA and UCSD seems to fit best at what you're looking at. UCI is secondary option for virtually all students (UCLA/UCSD rejects) for people who wish to stay in Southern California.

Cal States are not on the same tier as the UC's, but they're cheaper and easier to get into, while still providing a solid education. You can always go for grad school at a UC after if you so choose.

Too many people applying for that major.

Special admission requirements probably apply.
