from the UCSD site:

Transfer Applicants:

Currently, the following majors are considered impacted for transfer applicants:

Computer Science, and Computer Engineering (within the Computer Science and Engineering Department); and Computer Engineering (within the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department).

Transfer students interested in applying to any of the above majors must select an alternate major on the UC Application. Qualified applicants not admitted directly to the major will be admitted to their alternate major, provided it is not impacted. The following majors admit transfer students to pre-major status only:

Bioengineering; Bioengineering: Bioinformatics; Bioengineering: Biotechnology; Bioengineering: Premedical; Biology with Specialization in Bioinformatics; Chemistry: Bioinformatics; Computer Science with Specialization in Bioinformatics; Electrical Engineering; Engineering Physics; Human Development; Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts (Music and Visual Arts) Literature/Writing; Mathematics-Computer Science; and Visual Arts - Media with Computing Emphasis.

As a pre-major you must satisfy all prerequisites before admission to the major. The set of conditions, determined on a department-by-department basis, is explained in detail under the department listing in the General Catalog.

Transfer

Transfer students are encouraged to complete as many of the required screening courses as possible before making an application to UCSD. Transfer students should apply to one of the related majors within the departments of Computer Science & Engineering, Bioengineering, Biology or Chemistry & Biochemistry.

So what happens if you get in but not in your major...can you not graduate with that degree?

Minus, I am asuming you're not interested in FL since you never responded to my suggestion further up in the post.

if there are any similar colleges in FL I'd definately be willing to take a look, I have a friend who goes to the University of Tampa and he likes it. I just don't know what schools to look at. I'm looking for something big and in a nice town near or in a city.

its almost impossible to transfer into the UC system unless you are coming from the one community college that have the feeder agreement with the UCs. and thats just instate. out of state... well its going to be VERY difficult.

the CSU system is probably going to be where you will end up if you are looking for a public school.

If you get in, you can try to complete the screening courses and meet the minimum grade requirements for them. They're usually 3.0 or so. If you meet them, you can apply and hope to get in. If not, find yourself another major.

here's a list of cal state campuses...are any of those in San Diego or a close/similar area? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to California's geography.

There are three big universities in the San Diego area: UCSD, SDSU, and USD.

The hardest one to transfer into is UCSD. It's the most prestigious of all in San Diego and in the nicest area, La Jolla. There are six colleges in UCSD, so maybe one is easier to get into than another?

I went to SDSU for a semester for a MS in CS. I can't say much about the academics, but the "view" is spectacular. There are a couple good professors and a few to stay far, far away from. PM me if you decide to go this route. The strength of SDSU is in the robotics program. I decided to drop the program. I'm not sure how the undergrad CS differs from grad.

I don't know much about USD. I have a cousin who goes there and she seems to like it.

^ USD is nice. good law school. the thing is though, its a bit on the religious side, having a a few churches and all. but other than that, beautiful campus and my family has deep roots planted into that institution. but yeah, ucsd i would agree is the best choice if you can get in. some good information posted above. ill try and chime in with whatever information i have/know.

sweet...thanks for the help.

Jesus...looking at the stats for USD and UCSD...both the SAT averages are around 1200 but the GPAs are around 3.8. What's the deal with that? Doesn't that seem a little unbalanced?

i'd recommend

UC Berkeley (CAL)
Stanford
UCLA
UCSB
UCSD
San Diego State - perhaps.

That's ridiculous. Any of the hundreds of community colleges in the state will make it easy for anyone wanting to transfer to practically any UC, including Berkeley and UCLA with a good enough GPA..i.e. 3.5+, which at a community college is basically a cake walk.

in my situation though it's kind of an all ot none thing...although I guess it depends on what credits would transfer over.

i go to Long Beach State..it's a pretty good school. Dunno if it's any good for engineering or cs though, but I know its good for business.

and i've always been told that SDSU = STDSU

Yeah, out of state students are very tough to transfer to good UCs even if you have good GPA. I think the priority list goes from local community college transfer, CSU transfer and then out of state transfer. So, that means you have the least priority, together with the budget cut and whatnot the chance to get accepted is pretty low.

With a 3.0 GPA, I highly doubt you would get into a UC school as an out of state transfer.
San Diego State is not nearly as nice as UCSD, but it's still in San Diego and probably a 30 minute drive to the beach.

that's what I'm thinking. I think I'd rather stick out another semester and try to pull up my GPA before even trying anywhere though...I don't really want to sacrifice the academic portion just to go to school somewhere nice.
