The people you mentioned are definitely not representative of their group.

When making an assessment, it's rare that one can ever be 100% correct. But you can look at the *percentages* involved and get a pretty good idea that way. This is true no matter what the subject is.

For example, if we were to talk about the lifespan of people, I can say that on average a man lives to about 73 years old. Now you can correctly point out that some people have lived to 105, but that would be a statistical minority, definitely not the majority. If we broke it down to percentages, you may see that 90% make it to 60, 70% make it to 70, and it would drop off drastically after there... maybe only 50% make it to 72, 30% to 80, 10% to 90. and maybe 1% to 95.

If you looked at it on a chart, it would be visible as a sharply dropping slope.

So yes, you will always find "stragglers", people who seem to defy their demograohic. But they will be the minority, not the vast majority.

What is that supposed to mean. I'm citing supporting evidence, and you seem to be choosing to ignore it.

Ignoring my evidence does not support your argument in any way.

oh man, I don't even know where to start with this one. As far as I'm concerned, you're one of the more immature people I've ever seen on these forums among those who contribute to the more "serious" topics. I am young and opinionated, before you start using that as a flame tactic instead of the civil debate you claim to want. Whenever someone disagrees with what you say or your viewpoint, you begin attacking them, often about their supposed age, no matter how well thought out or respectful their post was. You use the youth of those you disagree with to disregard them and discount their opinions so you can feed your superiority complex. If you can't see you're using this argument for an excuse to aviod real discussion, where shockingly enough, someone might have a valid point that you don't agree with, then I'm sorry. Yes, this is a flame. Search if you want, I almost never flame anyone. I really don't care to argue about this, I just wanted to state my opinion.

Why do people take stuff so seriously on the internet?? I guess if you get that worried about ATOT, you should run out and get some fresh air.

How do you know those are outliers to begin with? You're assuming they are.

You are breaking one of the cardinal rules of debating. Instead of focusing on my point and addressing that, you are focusing on the person and attacking them. This is considered a "personal foul" in a debate.

Here are some good tips that we all (including myself) can benefit from:

Debating Tips

This isn't a debate, dude, its a forum and this is a thread. In other words, this is an open discussion and all opinions should be allowed ,as long as the mods are O.K. 'bout it.

So the rules of civility don't apply online?

Have you considered that having a mentality like that can possibly lend itself to the immature behavior on here? Maybe if you showed respect online just as you showed in real life, the forum wouldn't be such a flame fest.

If people were to act this way in real life, you'd see non-stop brawls at every public place or wherever people gathered.

Exactly. MJ sounds like he's a student that has just taken a philosophical class or two, and now thinks he knows the proper way to 'debate'. Sorry, this isn't a debating forum, it's a discussion forum.

I've already stated that I disagree with your viewpoints, because (I think I've already said this to) you can't really judge someone on the Internet.

Ehhh??? What rules of civility? As for flamefests, well, you seem to be rather schooled in that art :D.

civility does apply....and no one has personally attacked you, and I am sorry if you feel at all offended by my posts....but you cannot start a flamewar like this and then back away any time that someone has a point

You have brought up an interesting point and I agree with that statement. I do think that some people will take advantage of the anonymous nature. But I also think that younger people will be more likely to take advantage of it, and I think that older people will be more likely to keep the debate civil. Neither side is guaranteed to behave a certain way, but I think the likelihood does change.

Maybe you should take some of that statistical knowledge you have and apply it to yourself. You're taking one board, and coming to a hasty generalization from it. Go and find some 'adult' boards where there are open discussions and with a decent size member list, and see whether there is flaming. CNN had one of the biggest flamefests when it was around (i just checked, apparently they took the forum down... i wonder why), and 99% of the people there were adults.... intelligent, professional adults as well. You had well educated people from all round the world, flaming each other. I'm sure there has even been studies done about that forum.

As I've stated before, I am not perfect and I have been known to partipate in flamefest and flame people. This is not a revelation. I am not stating that I am in any way "better" than the other people that I am talking about either, I'm only human... nobody's immune to getting mad.

I am simply requesting that everyone try to tone down the intensity of their posts to cool down the overall climate of this forum. I'll try to follow my own advice and do the same.

Funny you should ask, I asked as well. I doubt he will answer, probably some 14 year old trying to gain internet attention.

and you wonder why no one takes you seriously.

why don't you just lead by example. it might not make you feel as self righteous and it might not seem like you get as much accomplished but i guarantee you, leadership by example is a LOT more effective than leadership by HYPOCRISY. :)

As I've said before, general rules of a conversation or debate state to attack the *idea*, not the person expressing it.

For instance, if someone brings up an idea that you find ridiculous, you should state why his idea is not valid... but you should not change the focus to the individual and call him an idiot.

I'm trying. A few people have flamed me already in this thread and I've tried not to react in the same way. Instead, I've tried to calmly address their criticisms.
