Why not indeed. I even cut out the mattress. I bought a 5" firm foam pad from JC Penny, and topped it with the 2" isotonic memory foam. Removed my old mattress. Sleep like a baby. Multiple layers and thicknesses of different density foam is the way to go - forget the "mattress" entirely, because you have just made your own custom mattress...

Thanks

Actually the FoamByMail 4.0 lb pad is made by Carpenter, who manufacturers Isotonic...so it's the same thing. :) The only difference of course is the extra inch. I'm wondering if overall a 5.3lb pad would have been better because I do notice it's a little difficult to move once I've laid down. I would not recommend a 4" pad... unless you like quicksand and are not claustrophic. ;)

I recieved my LNT mattress topper (1.5") it's great, but wife & I both agree that a thicker pad would be ideal...

Thinking of cutting this one in 1/2 & putting it on our kid's beds & getting a 2-3" pad.

Seems as though 3" is the maximum thickness in a 4 lb pad, I'm reluctant to try a heavier/denser pad, as I've read the heavier weight pads retain heat a little too effectively.

Memory Foam Superstore seems to have the best price @ ~$180 for a king size.

Any suggestions?

Well, I wrote to "foambymail" and asked about the covers for the pillows, and you were right Atrac - they do not come with covers. They will sell you a cotton cover w/zipper for $5 which is very reasonable, but I have plenty of them. I just dont know if they will fit the size of this queen pillow.

I have a few queen size mattress toppers (regular foam, 1" memory, 2" memory) and I went out and bought a queen fitted sheet set made of flannel and covered all three with the sheet. I bought it at Marshall's for about $30 including a couple of pillow cases. These work very nice - they have a nice feel to them, and for $30 you cant beat the price. I recommend these flannel sheets and pillow cases if you need them.

And, for the record this foambymail place answers emails right away. I sent them an email at about 7:00pm eastern time last Friday, and they answered it the same evening. This is always an indication of great customer service. They also answered my email about the pillow covers within hours.

When I get these 5.3lb Sensus pillows I will give a heads up as to how I feel about them. If I like the density, I will probably go ahead and buy a topper or a mattress. Foambymail will also supply you with a Sensus mattress - if you tell them the size you want they will email you a price. I havent asked for a price yet as I am waiting for the pillows.

I noticed that SmartBargains have the Comfort Zone mattress pads on sale for $29.99-$49.99, flat rate shipping of only $6.95.

It doesn't say what density they are, only that they are 1.25" thick, which is not very thick at all.

Sensus Topper from Mark's Half Price Bedding (memoryfoam.com).

The box arrived yesterday as expected. First thing I noticed was that this stuff was HEAVY. My 2" twin topper had to weigh at least 30lbs (@5.3lb density). After cutting it loose from the plastic saran wrap that covered it, i was immediately able to unfold and it put it on my bed. The foam is extremely smooth and luxurious but also has a somewhat sticky texture. It feels totally QUALITY. It hardly felt like I was laying on anything when I was on it. Truely amazing.

I also ordered one of the Perfect Pillows (carpenter foam) and it pales in comparison to the sensus stuff. It's heavy, but it just feels airy and is much softer than the Sensus. It also doesn't hold an imprint like the Sensus does. I also have one of the Select Comfort foam pillows which is more firm than the Perfect Pillow, but yet again the foam doesn't feel as nice or hold an imprint as well as the Sensus.

I've felt orginal Tempurpedic stuff (like @ Brookstone) and I'd say the Sensus has a lower ILD (less firm). The Sensus by far has the best feel out of any of the foam I've seen.

I will definately be buying another 2" topper. Most likely I'll use the perfect pillow elsewhere or give it to my sister. It just seems too light and fluffy.

BTW, SpotDancer, did you get your 5.3lb pillows? Is it actual Sensus foam (Pink in color). Also, memoryfoambymail lists totally different ILDs (in the 30s) vs the 13ILD for Mark's carpenter foam and 15ILD for the Sensus I ordered.

Ok, now I did some looking.

The Foam Factory sells Sensus pillows on ebay for $30 a piece.

On their web site they don't have any sensus stuff, but they do have another kind of 5.3lb density foam (it's blue and has an ild of 32).

I just spoke with them on the phone. They are discontinuing the blue foam and replacing it with the sensus. I just placed an order for one of the Sensus pillows, I can't wait!! They also are expecting within the next couple months regular (non-contoured) Sensus pillows. Sensus fckin rules.

I just received the queen size Sensus Memory Foam pillows from foambymail (aka The Foam Factory) through eBay, and I have to say I was totally surprised by these pillows. I expected the 5.3lb density pillows to be much more firm than the 4.0lbs Comfort Zone pillows I bought, but they are definitely not firm or "hard."

As Minerat said the Sensus foam is heavy, soft, and very luxurious feeling. Not only that, but they are actually a bit larger than advertised - 27x14 with one end a little over 3" thick and the larger end almost 5" thick. Put end to end they completely cover the width of a queen size mattress.

This material is so thick, dense, and soft it has me wondering what thickness mattress pad to buy? I think Atrac mentioned that if his Carpenter (4.0lb density?) were any thicker than 3" he would have trouble getting up from it. I think I now understand what he meant!! This stuff is like marshmallows!

It is very obvious to me that whatever Sensus topper you get, you should have a very firm foundation to use with it. Thanks for the heads-up from Sesopedalian on buying a foam mattress, thereby creating your own custom made mattress with memory foam toppers. If you look around, you will find that these type mattresses have 3" toppers, and cost about $800. You should be able to make your own for $400, and use high quality materials in the bargain!! There is a foam factory not far from my place, so I am going to visit them and check out the different foam mattresses they have, and get a good quality foam mattress to use as a foundation for a Sensus mattress topper, probably two 2" 5.3lb density queen pads - only because the 4" pad is about $50 more expensive than two of the 2" ones. I wonder why that is - that a 4" pad is almost $50 more than two 2" pads - doesnt seem to make sense?

After buying numerous memory foam pads and mattresses, my cash is now going into buying O-N-L-Y the Sensus Memory foam material. The Sensus material is amazing, and for right now the prices cannot be beat. I paid $59.98 for the two Sensus queen pillows, and got free shipping. The mattress pads are also reasonable when compared to other stuff of less quality. I highly recommend Sensus Memory Foam!!

I realize this is a bit early, but I want to say, happy anniversary to you Atrac, and this thread. I have a feeling we may all be seeing many more posts from others for the next year - it certainly would not surprise me!!:Q

I'm curious as to why the Sensus needs a foam pad as the foundation? I wonder what would happen if I just place the 3" Sensus on my carpet and just sleep on it like that (w/o the bed frame or mattress). I just moved out of the dorm, and so, I have yet to buy a bed set. Thinking of building my own custom bed with the foam.

Slikk - I was referring to building your own bed which I am sure you understood. I dont think there would be any problem for you to buy a 3" or 4" Sensus topper and putting it on the floor - it should work fine. If youre someone like me who used to fall out of bed when they got drunk, you wouldnt fall very far either!! :Q

Sorry for the delay in the reply. This topper is what I used for the foundation, directly on the old boxsprings, no plywood, but that could be done also. Now these "toppers" are too firm to be used without the added 2" of memory foam, but they are cheap and provide an excellent bottom layer in place of the mattress. I chose the 5" "firm", although the "extra firm" probably would work equally as well. I have an extra 1" memory foam "eggcrate" on top of it all, just because I allready was using it. To sum up, the bottom layer is the 5" firm (in the link) on a boxspring. Add to that 2" of isotonic memory foam. Then I have a memory foam 1" eggcrate on top of that, but I would think you could try it out without the 1" layer to see if you like the system. I was concerned this setup would be too soft, but was surprised to find it to be perfect.

SpotDancer - You are right, a custom mattress was exactly what I was trying for, and this is how the expensive foam mattresses are layered. Let us know what you find out from that foam factory. I don't know how to describe the density of the 5" "topper" that I am using for the foundation, but I bet they have something similar they could suggest.

Has anyone compared featherbed mattress toppers to the memory foam toppers? I've tried that and standard $10 egg-crate toppers, and the featherbed was MUCH better.... what do you guys think?

Sesopedalian, what was your total cost with the base foam, the memory foam topper, pillows, and everything? I was looking at about $600 for a basic memory foam mattress set, but if that's cheaper I'd probably rather go that way.

I've used a similar foam to what you linked to in the past, exept that mine was yellow and I may not have been quite as firm. It's quite comfortable though, although I'm not sure how well 5" would work. I think mine was about 4".

I ordered 2 queen size Sensus pillows through foambymail (aka The Foam Factory) via eBay. [I believe the exact same as SpotDancer] Hopefully they should be arriving this week. :) I will be sure to report back and give an update on how I like them.

not to be a cry baby, but this thread is just ridiculous to read through it all and find the best deal.

can someone that knows this thread by heart summarize the latest and greatest? remember, HOTDEALS!!! (eg. brookstone's pillow is NOT considered a hotdeal since it is readily available both product and price.)

i want to spend under $50 if possible. and hypoallergenic covers.

thanks guys.

My wife says I snore less now that I'm using the "perfect pillow" I got at Stein Mart.

I didn't post the cost because I used coupon codes that are no longer available. However, there are always sales on the JC Penny website that would apply to the foam. I linked to what I discovered to be a comfortable foundation for any quality 2" memory foam topper. I see many posts in this thread on different memory foam toppers, but none on what foam to put under them if one wants to do away with the regular mattress and custom build one entirely made from all foam. Close to what I bought from JCPenny in the link above is:

Omalon

I had no idea when I started if these two kinds of foam would be comfortable together, but now I have two beds like this.

I like Isotonic (Viscolux) for the 2" memory foam layer because it is name-brand from the Carpenter Company, and can also be purchased in the same order.

Sesopedalian,
I thought I was done with this stuff but you had to find the killer deal on a foam mattress. Oh well, one extra firm on the way - free shipping too!

This thread constantly "upgrades" itself with better deals, and better products. If you want to find something good all you have to do is read through the last two pages, probably less, and you will find everything you might want to know.

And stop being a cry baby!:Q
