I am sure that I did not damaged the NB by removing the HS. A water block will work fine as far as I can tell. Put passive cooling on the south bridge also.

the scythe infinity uses the same reference intel push pin design. i don't like it. doesn't seem very secure to me. and it is easy to take the NB heatsink off. i swapped out the supplied with AS5. seems to move around pretty easily.

I also messed around with my RAM last night. Stability goes right down the shitter when I try to use either just the yellow slots or the black slots. I changed all settings in the bios to Auto for the RAM timings to make sure those weren't messing anything up. The only way I can keep it stable is if I put the RAM in 1 black, 1 yellow. I'm not sure what the hell is going on with that but its annoying the crap out of me. Right now I'm working on getting the processor speed to where I want it and at temperatures I like and then I'm going to mess around more with the RAM.

Dude, I have the same FPO/BATCH# that you do (L631A586). I was able to get above 3.4 on this setup. Have you gone any higher?

i was also wary about the standard intel pin design attachment for the ninja. however, like all the reviews say, this heatsink is balanced nicely with the majority of the weight near the base.

it was easy to install the ninja and it really felt solid attached to this mobo IMO.

What kind of temps were you getting with the L631A. I have a L630A and seems to run a little cooler than my L628A. Both are good overclockers

I agree the ninja is balanced and not too heavy. However I had issues with the base hitting the capcitors next to the chip and modified mine a bit see here

As far as OCing my e6600 I just couldn't get it to 3.6GHz no matter the voltage. I could hit 3.5 but is wasn't stable. For daily use I ended up dialing back with all stock voltage except NB @ 1.39 for a 3.15GHz clock which gives me no increase in temps from stock at idle.

I used the linked option and set my FSB @ 1400 and it set my Mem @ 1050MHz, however my CPU-Z reports my memory @ 420 MHZ @ FSB: DRAM 5:6. So is the ram running at 840MHz or 1050MHz? CPU-Z Screenshot

Just to make sure I have followed along here, What exaclty are were sticking on the NB and SB chips for cooling. I saw the pic above wich has the TT HR-05 on the NB, But what are we adding onto the naked southbridge chip.

I have no doubt I can definitely get it up to 3.4 or higher but I'm on stock cooling and have no desire to run it any warmer than it does at 3ghz. Until I replace that cooling I'm happy with that.

Nice job HR Boy that thing is huge. Try Linked and Sync if you want. The bios is lowering your ram speed to 840MHz. I think this bios has an auto pilot on board. I told you your ram would run at or above 800MHz

While I was running stable at 3.2GHz, my temps while running ORTHOS at 100% never went above 48C with the Freezer Pro

Edit: Don't forget to take into considerations that I live in central Florida, where we have had a very mild winter, and the ambient temperatures in my house are >80 at daytime and >60 at night. We are in for a cool spell though, tomorrow's high is only suppose to be like 75 and then the next day 70. It been a realy tough one here this year.

hi idiotekniques

i really dont get how one of you can have a problem installing the ninja and one of you didnt???

is the ninja plus the same model as the ninja revision b...i want the ninja that has the fan ready attached, the revision B.

if you really didnt have any problems i think i will go for the ninja over the zalman 9500 at.

i have the ninja plus rev. B that came with a fan.

i had zero issues mounting this heatsink and of course i did it outside the case and took a long hard look around and it wasnt obstructing anyhting on the mobo..

if you decide to aim the fan so it shoots air out a top blowhole, you will not be able to use a NB heatsink like the TT HR-05, so i put the fan on the ninja shooting out the back of the case.

if you do this the only thing is put the fan so part of it is above the roof of the ninja otherwise the bottom of the fan will rest on ram in the yellow slots. however, i use the black slots so it is no issue - but i do plan on getting 2x1gb more ram so i have my fan with clearance.

that is the only issue i can think of and it really is very easy to solve if you must use the yellow slots. no modding needed.

Tip #101
When I setup a new rig that I know I'm going to overclock. I add two identical drives to the system The first one I install windows and all updates and upgrades and all my overclocking utilities on it. I then make sure that everything is running exactly the way I want it to and make a backup copy of the whole drive right on the drive it self. Then I mirror image the 1st drive to the second drive and boot off that drive and install my everyday programs and utilities on that drive. When I overclock I use the first drive this way if files are corrupted I just boot off the second drive and restore files to the first one from the backup. A lot of time board inconsistency is caused from corrupted system files due to bad oc"s. For an extra 69.00 for another 250gb HD its a cheap peace of mind

do you have the rev. B?

i am RMA'ing this mobo and getting a DS3 or a p5B-D so when i take out my p5n-e ill take a picture of my clearance before i remove the ninja cause i didnt have to grind anything.

oh on my SB i put an el-cheapo heatsink from jab-tech that came with thermal tape although you can put on the el-cheapo zalman that uses push pins, the mobo has the holes there - its all you need. it gets warm and thats it, not even hot. under full load.

Can't afford the electricity. Insurance crisis and the such.... Besides any lower than 77 and I get cold. And to think that I grew up in New Hampshire 16 miles north of Mount Washington.

But now, I have turned Floridian and live east of Tampa and north of Brandon. Near where I4 and I75 meet.

When I get my board back I am going to seat the NB cooler (either the HR-05 or HR-05 SLI depending on the fit) with a nylon screw leveling setup. I dont like the way that the ASUS NB cooler sits on the chip. It's too wobbly for me. I also looked at different attachment types and havn't found anything that I like to really secure the heat sink to the chip with the exception of epoxy, and I don't want to do that. I definitely want some type of other mounting that wil keep things secure.
