i am having decision issues.

whether i should go with an asus p5b-deluxe or a gigabyte p965 ds3. if i get the ds3 i can get the zalman cooler for my 1950pro.

the ds3 seems to have a cold boot issue for holding your oc.

and i do like this board i have now but the sata issues i had have made me leary.

Speaking of weather and Florida, I lived Tampa and Panama City before moving out here to Oklahoma....as of right now its 1p and a balmy 21f...I'm missing Florida right about now

LOL..nah, thats kansas. We atleast have some trees. The tumbleweeds wont mess with you if you dont mess with them. Its the tornados you have to worry about. Other than that Its a nice cheap place to live.

Its your call. Go to some other forums and check out what people are saying. Go to ASUS and check in their forum for the P5B and see what complaints there are. Do the same with Gigabyte. The only difference that I see are the 'pretties' and the SB. Check which is the better the ICH8 or the ICH8R. As for price and 'pretties' only you can decide that.
 
i did a lot of reading. it seems the ds3 has the cold boot issues and the p5b has boards dying after 4 months. who knows if they overvolted the heck out of them.

also asus is the most popular brand so they will have the most complaints so i have to take that into account.

i do like that the asus boards, including this one, have the eSATA port in the back. id like to use an external drive like this later possibly.

i couldnt see if gigabyte had a similar convenience like the q-connect.

the benchies for these boards are really too close to call. of course the gigabyte looks like a clown exploded on it but since the p180 has no window i could care less.

ahhh well ill figure ito ut. i have an hour if i want it to get here by friday.

i'm sticking with this one. i can't think of another one for $129 that gives this much flexibility with lowering multi's and running mem separate from cpu frequency. just don't understand the delay on a better bios. i'm used to getting a newer one every month or so with my other boards. (dfi, epox)

yes i am very torn. i havent pulled the trigger yet cause i want to keep this one since it is working well now. but i dont want the problem to return because it is unbearable. i like the price and i like the features and the two IDE ports.

IDE ports are not the issue. You can get IDE to SATA converters (have to work both ways). Sounds like your issue is whether to take a chance on the cold boot issue or a board that will MAYBE die on you and if it does, it will be in 4 months and it looks like you will be there next looking for another board.

I looked at over 25 boards when I started my search. I set a budget. I reaad reviews. I narrowed it down. I selected then P5N-E SLI because it OC'ed well and the price allowed me to step up on the memory side. For me that worked.

Id I was looking at another motherboard, I would look at the availability of DDR3 and quad-core capable. The quad-core capability was the win-over for me.

Go with what you know is right, not what you feel is right.

EDIT: The quad core remark was for my EPOX Board for my AM2 setup. But the premis is the same.
 
i bit the bullet and got the p5b-deluxe. it will be $40 more so not too bad.

i also looked at many boards for this build and settled on this p5ne-sli for the reasons you mentioned. it really is a sweet board and the price is very nice- high five!

however, all my research for the issues i was having unearthed some very serious problems nVidia chipsets have with SATA drives and data corruption. even when some of the lockup issues were solved, data corruption still occured and some hard drives were fubared. at this point in time my data is extremely valuable to me and i cannot risk it at all. i would rather have a board just die on me rather than slowly destroy my data.

heck, i am most disappointed that i wont have this board to chat about with you guys in this thread above anything else 🙂

i have no loyalty to intel chipsets or nvidia chipsets ore any mobo manufacturer.

the one place i had a subconscious loyalty it seems is ati since i seem to only buy their GC and of course after i did so this time i realized i should have probably bought a 7950GT vs the 1950pro. although it seems reviews for GCards are so wacky, on one review the nvidia will kill the 1950pro at F.E.A.R. benchies but then another site they stay very close at all settings. and this is from reputable site reviews.

Hey whata mean you got me????? I have the P5B Deluxe and I have spent a lot of time on the P5B Deluxe Forum and could probably answer any of your questions. Word of advise don't install the JMicron driver unless you need the esata. Let windows put its own driver in. By the time you come back here we'll be talking about how good that bios upgrade did for this board and how it can Fly
 
guys i have to say that this thread isnt exactly filling me with confidence about this board.

whats this problem with the harddrive corruption, that sounds serious?

im considering going for the less problematic p5b deluxe

least i know for sure a ninja rev b will fit on that, and my ram will be able to run at normal timings!

This is the first I heard of any hard drive corruption and I have been here all day
 
well just google nforce and sata error or data corruption, etc - stuff like that, turns out it was a big time issuewith nVidia chipsets recently.

the same thing happened with the 680i chipset and nVidia did release a bios fix that they say fixed it not long ago.

i got some similar errors trying to transfer data but found a different fix that involved native command queing settings in windows which does seem to have stabliized my system. i did see somebody who said after a few weeks they started getting errors again and massive fragmentation of rarely used drives. i decided for myself that i cant risk it,

i could be over-reacting as well. as you can see, i am the only person in this thread who had the failed write delay errors so maybe it is very isolated. maybe it really was a windows based thing with this mobo that i took care of. i looked at the track record available to me, my experience, and made my decision.

so i dont want to create unnecessary chaos over this since the 650i seems to be better than the 680i so far in this regard, in fact better than previous chipsets by nV - and the internet is a crazy place where you see more bad than good since people get online more to troubleshoot than anything else.

i don't blame you. fortunately my pc is just for screwing around with mostly. my most stable pc gets the duty of storing important stuff. well if you do get a different one don't be a stranger.
 
I hope I don't run into this HD transfer problem. I got a lot of gigs I need to transfer from my current IDE HD to the new one I plan to do a fresh OS install on. I also plan to buy two 160GB SATA drives for a RAID 0 array for games only. I can't wait till Thursday to build this beast.
 
I thumbed through the evga forums when I was looking at the 680i, I think the SATA probs are mostly on that board. I havent seen many complaints on the 650i in that regard.

i have looked and this seems rare on this mobo. but it can happen.
 
I'm glad for once that I have IDE drives. Thats the main reason I got this board because it had the 2 IDE Connections instead of the 1 on the intel chipset boards. I'm stable right now at the settings in my sig so I'm pretty happy. With better cooling, I know I can do much better which makes me happy and I've got my fingers crossed that ASUS will come through with a BIOS update for us to get rid of some of these memory holes.

Dude, PM me when you get your new board. I'll take this one off your hands for a fair price.

I did alot of research on this board and on the chipset and not one review I read had any thing to say about SATA HHD corruption. There is a know issue about the memory speed at 412 but lots of people have overcome it without a new BIOS. I have see some clocked P5N-E SLI's with the E6400 and I wonder how people can justify spending money for an extra two megs of cache when it is mostly use up on managing its own cache space.

You got a hell of a board there. If you have data that is that precious on your overclocking rig then spend some money on getting a cou[ple of disk drives so that a mirror copy of your OS and data can be recalled if you have any problems.

If you are not wiling to gamble your files then don't OC. I can assure you that even a P5B will have some issues that you will come to regret and second guessing yourself and saying "I should have went with the Gigabyte".

All boards have some type of hangup not because there bad boards, it is just the limitations of the board. Don't blame the board for something it was not designed to do, and that is to operate an E6400 at 3.1Ghz.

You are chasing a dream that won't ever materealize.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, I just want to save you some heartache and maybe some $$$'s along the way.
