The Ultimate SM3.0 Game Thread

Listen Bar,
ATI's next gen will support SM3.0 just like nvidia does now. So the real question is, hmm. What should I buy? ATI's SM3.0 card or Nvidia's SM3.0 card. If ATI offered SM3.0 with the R4xx architecture, this thread would not exist would it?

Whether SM3.0 benefits anything at all or not, would you rather have the card that doesn't support it? For the same money, I'll take the SM3.0 card just like people chose ATI's R3xx DX9 performance over the FX series gen because it did it better because it supported 24 bit FP. I'm not trying to rile you up or anything, no worries. But if you put 2 cards in front of me, one with SM3.0 compliance and one without, at the same cost, or a little more, I'll go with the SM3.0 card, "JUST IN CASE". It's a lot easier than trying to convince everybody that SM2.0b can do everything 3.0 can do. If that was the case, why call it 2.0b?

Oh yeah, please try to ease up on the personal attacks in here. I've noticed that a lot from you. Not to me....... yet. Mods are cracking down on that stuff lately.

Id rather buy an SM3 capable card which can actually utilize it properly, when frame rates are exceptable. But thats because i always have enough money to buy the next high end card that comes out.

And also HDR isnt a feature of SM3, its a feature of DX9.0c

read up....3.0 looks better and performs better then 2.0...even if it wont be used for a year, i think thats still something nice

firstly, SM 3.0 does "look better" more efficiently
(the GPU doesn't have to work so hard to display what 2.0 can but faster)

and

the few titles that currently utilize SM 3.0 have added it after the game and engine were (nearly) completed. Clearly the current games are not optimized for 3.0 as well as games that start with it in mind . . . . the 6800gt/ultra should run games very well until Unreal III engine and DX 10 in '06 . . . . certainly r520 will be well ahead of today's top cards . . .

unfortunately Software IS running about 12-18 months behind HW . . . remember how the programmers of Xbox II had to get nVidia 6800 series cards to program SM 3.0 efficiently even though the Xbox next core will be ati r500. . . . . you can be sure the next gen of games will utilize SM 3.0 and UNLESS you upgrade videocards every year, you should consider a SM 3.0 capable card . . . i know i will.

Feel free to show where his first post is "BS FUD"? As far as I can tell, its all true. SM3.0 doesnt greatly impact gaming, yet. And it can make some games take a huge hit in frames when enabled, or not allow AA. Where did he post an untruth?

What features due to changes in core design are not present on the 9700Pro/9800Pro that are present on the X800 series Ackmed?

I keep saying it's the 2002 feature set because, for the most part, it is.

Like many others here have stated, unless you buy cards very frequently, a X800 is a bad investment. ATI will have a SM3 card out soon, and all the people duped into buying a high cost X800 as a long term investment in 2005 are going to gnash their teeth as the value of their cards plummet.
ATI will be putting out their line of SM3/SLI ready cards this year, I'd think those would be the ones to buy if you want ATI?

I personally don't think 3dc and temporal AA quite make up for the lack of SM3 and DX9C, or SLI capability, but to each their own.

This whole "same as last year" thing with ATI is getting really old-
2002- 9700Pro released
2003-9800Pro released, mostly a speed bump
2004- X800 released, it's a 9800Pro with double pipes
2005- X850 released, a speed bump

So we've got ATI killing time with the R300 core spanning four calendar years. I bought three of those cards, but come on, some innovation would be nice.
I think their engineers were so proud of the R300 (justifiably so) they bought all the pot and Pink Floyd records in Canada and moved to the Caymans.
They ran out of money for coconut shrimps and margaritas sometime late last year, so they stowed away on a fishing trawler, showed up back at the office with notes explaining their absence from Ziggy Marley, and announced the R520.
