Pathetic that you're so reading challenged that you couldn't comprehend the second article linked in my previous post. j I'll help you with your short attention span by quoting this paragraph:

What makes you think they aren't? What do you think we've discussed?

Either the willing ignorance or the blatant stupidity is strong with you. Which is it?

A single article from McAfee? I'm sure that they don't have any bias in the study. Looks like big business to them. Lots of comments on that article, why didn't you post to agree?

Of course countries are waging cyberwarfare, but no, FB is not going to be used by the Russian gov't to wage cyberwarfare.

Mods - shouldn't this be in P&N?

I started the thread just a couple of hours after the actual deal with Goldman Sachs and Digital Sky Technologies happened. It struck a particular chord with me because, as mod, I see a lot of spam and other malicious activity from Russia that is immediately deleted from the forums or never appears, at all.

I can't force anyone to agree, let alone act on the information about Facebook, but I've been a mod for over twelve years so you might think I actually care enough about the forums and our members to post about it for serious consideration and discussion.

Of course countries are waging cyberwarfare, but no, FB is not going to be used by the Russian gov't to wage cyberwarfare.

And exactly what is your authority for this great declarative pronouncement? :colbert:

Mods - shouldn't this be in P&N?

I am a mod, and before I started the thread, I asked Perknose if he had any preference about where I posted it. We agreed that it's a crossover topic involving both social and political issues that could go in either forum.

If it really means enough to you, I can move the thread to P&N and leave a linking thread title on OT. In effect, that would make it appear as one active thread in both forums, simultaneously.

OTOH, with over 150 replies, so far, it doesn't seem that far off the mark, where it is. :)

The US probably has more Cyber Warfare projects ongoing than any other country, and none of them will be to do with anything as pointless as your FarmVille score. Cool your jets.

Same question for you. What is your authority for your statement, or is that just your uninformed opinion?

Haha, OK, I'll bite and suggest that the entire premise of your OP is probably the most ill informed thing I'll read for a month.

why do you guys care who is watching you? there are over 6 billion mofo's on this planet and unless anyone here is actually famous with a public image to maintain, i really don't think anyone cares to track down some random geek who argues about Video cards, flirts with girls on FB and faps to anime pr0n.

OK. I'll reply and tell you that I have personally banned large swaths of Russian IP addresses from the forums as sources of forum spam, porn, fraud and other criminal activities. In the course of reporting actual criminal activities, I've also had occasion to speak with law enforcement people about it.

Want more evidence? Check this page on this stopforumspam.com. The little Russian flag pic
ru.png
denotes the country of origin of the reported spam source. Note what it says at the top of the page:

Country Check - Russian Federation

322344 entries in our database from Russian Federation (18.62% total)

18.62% of the total reported spam posts is not a trivial amount. Now, maybe you'd like to tell us about all of those great information sources that feed YOUR ill-informed opinion.

And last year 17% came from the US. Epic backfire of your own "evidence" FTW!

Uh-huh, and while you're at it, try identifying your wonderful, all knowing sources of information sources for us, and try asking them about the specific nature of what those offending U.S. based sources are doing. :whiste:

Clue -- It's probably NOT cyber-warefare against the U.S. :colbert:

At this point, you're blowing smoke out of your ass, trying to hide the fact that you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground.

well, this sure as shit is a pack of lies:
Latvia

On November 8, 2010, former member of the Nazi Latvian Legion of the Waffen SS, Visvaldis Lacis, became head the Citizenship Committee in Latvia’s Parliament. Lacis is member of the right-wing nationalist party All For Latvia!. The party demands a prohibition of the Russian language in schools and the deportation of ethnic Russians. Lacis has published numerous articles and books glorifying Hitler’s Germany and regularly celebrates the invasion of the Soviet Union by German troops in 1941.[17][18]

The Latvian Legion:
--did not take the SS Oath. None of them were required to be loyal to Hitler. I believe this is the only Legion in the German army that held that distinction.
--was recognized by Nurembourg, by the allied forces, as NOT MEMBERS OF THE NAZI Party. they were praised for their bravery and restraint, and in fact were conscripted to guard the Nazi prisoners during the trials.
--they were formed late in the war and fought with the Germans to DEFEND THEIR HOME FROM RUSSIANS. As such , they often fought against, killing their own Latvian brothers, who fought for Russia, over their homeland

The Russians in Latvia want Russian to be an official language. this is fucking ridiculous. Why would us, as US citizens, tolerate a bunch of immigrants, much less OCCUPIERS--demanding that we accept Spanish as an official language? Much of this is brought on by the older generation that wants to go back to the time where they were in charge, though poor and powerless. Now, they are the only ones that choose to be poor. Their children don't much care, and prefer to learn Latvian, as they won't be going to school, or working in Russia.

The Nationalist party is kind of crazy there, but they come from a history of having their friends and family deported and murdered at the hands of Russians, their homes and property taken from them and handed over to uneducated Russian peasants--who were likewise relocated in Stalin's program of forced cultural hegemony (exactly the same policy of what they have been doing with Georgia and South Ossetia over recent decades)

This article is rife with the same kind of propaganda and BS you expect from state-run media. Not that unusual from any kind of comments and articles I read out of Russian media.

You can call it racism, but at some point, these fucks need to face up to the facts of what they've done, what they are doing, and what they truly are. Currently, Russia continues to deny any wrongdoing at the hands of the Baltic States, Poland, or any other formerly occupied territory.

They choose to remain a 2nd world country under this type of denial. Look at what Germany has managed to do with itself since the end of the war, since the end of communist occupation in East Germany.

Cute. :p A phobia implies no rational basis for the "fear." I don't "fear" Russians. I'm not advocating restarting the cold war or taking any hostile actions against Russia or any other nation, but I am concerned about some specific events and circumstances, and I've posted links that support that concern.

I had dinner with my Russian apartment managers, last night, while workiing on their daughter's computer. In the past, when I warned them that there is greater risk of getting hit by viruses and spyware on Russian sites (not just porn sites), THEY agreed and said they knew that was the case. The same is true for some of my other Russian neighbors.

If all you want to do is try to discredit me for posting about this, and you don't care whether you get infected or defrauded by something that happens through a Russian link, believe me, I don't care about what happens to you, either.

However, I DO care enough about the possiblity of a greater problems for the U.S. in this particular deal between Facebook and DST, and, by extension, the implications of further, similar deals, to note it for discussion. At this point, I've said all I have to say on the subject. You can go back to your sandbox.

Again, just fear mongering. I'm surprised your not also posting about a Russian firm trying to buy a US uranium mill. Or warning people about using LiveJournal, Twitter, Groupon or Zynga. And of course any thread such as this is going to get responses in OT.

And as a mod on several other forums and working for a company that handles 25% of the world's internet traffic, it's nothing to be concerned that a Russian firm has 1% ownership with no board seat in FB.

Honestly, this was a region of the world that hate-hate-hate-HATED Germany for 7 centuries, as this was part of The Prussian Kingdom, more or less.

Latvia and the other Baltic regions gained their independence around 1918, and for the first time, formed their own independent countries. Up until 1940, they achieved relative economic success through agrarian and small technical production.

It took only 1 year, from 1940-1941, when Russia invaded, deported 40,000 citizens in ONE NIGHT, and terrorized the populace--for the Latvians to welcome Germany back as OCCUPIERS. They learned to hate Russia and everything it brought with them in only 1 year, enough so that it erased 700 years of built-up animosity towards their former landlords.

try to rationalize that. Those that joined the Legion saw this as the only opportunity to keep Russia the fuck out of Latvia. Those that held off in Kurzema, becoming the only separated German line, well after the front had moved into Germany, were the only German legion to not surrender at the end of the war.

if you want to say there is some sketchy shit coming out of russia regarding the internet and hackers, i'll completely agree with you.

if you want to say that somehow facebook is becoming a front for said activity because some russians invested in facebook, i have to draw the line there.

Horseshit.

Why is it horseshit? What I do on my own time is absolutely, positively none of my employers business. Period. End of story. The fact that you think it should be any other way is very, very scary.

If I come to work on time, leave late and do my job as expected, that is all that matters.

Oh, I do agree with this, by the way. I'm simply hijacking this thread as a springboard for my virulent anti-Russian acrimony.

If you think my post was "russophobic," since you're into pics, here's one I found of you.

< shrug > Too many people trying to make something of what I said that was neither said nor intended. Sorry I tried to post something interesting and even relevant that requires just a tiny bit of intellect to comprehend. I'm out of this thread.
